'Dirt Road' Gets New Meaning: NHAI Used 63 MT Of Waste For National Highway Construction In 2023-24
Last Updated: A significant initiative by the NHAI includes the use of plastic waste in highway construction, particularly in urban areas generating high volumes of plastic waste In a major stride toward sustainable infrastructure, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) repurposed over 63 million tonnes of waste in building national highways during 2023-24. The highway-building body on Tuesday released the second Sustainability Report 2023-24. The report details NHAI's robust framework for integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into every aspect of its operations. The Sustainability Report 2023-24 underlines the effectiveness of various efforts made by NHAI for environmental protection and energy conservation. As per the report, the NHAI successfully reduced its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Intensity from 1.0 MTCO2e/km to 0.8 MTCO2e/km, 'demonstrating a clear decoupling of construction growth from emissions". The reduction in GHG emissions was achieved despite a 20 per cent increase in highway construction in FY 2023-24, with 6,634 km built compared to 5,551 km in FY 2022-23. Also, the water use intensity of NHAI has reduced by 74% in water-stressed regions compared to FY2021-22. 'In FY 2023-24, NHAI utilised more than 631 lakh metric tonnes of recycled and reused materials, including fly-ash, plastic waste, and reclaimed asphalt, in National Highway construction. In addition to this, NHAI continued to undertake nationwide tree plantation drives along the National Highways. In FY 2023-24, NHAI planted over 56 lakh saplings," an official statement said. In 2024-25, the NHAI has already planted 67.47 lakh saplings, bringing the total tree plantation to over 4.69 crore since the implementation of the Green Highways (Plantation, Transplantation, Beautification and Maintenance) Policy 2015. Plastic Use in Roads As per the report, a significant initiative by the NHAI includes the use of plastic waste in highway construction, particularly in urban areas generating high volumes of plastic waste. The pilot projects in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and a stretch of NH-48 near Dhaula Kuan in Delhi have successfully incorporated plastic waste into surface courses. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Gurugram-Sohna Highway also feature sections constructed using this innovative approach. The NHAI said it used plastic waste through concessionaires and contractors. The efforts have significantly contributed to reducing environmental disruptions, with approximately seven tonnes of plastic waste eliminated for every kilometre of a four-lane highway constructed. Fly Ash and Pond Ash The combined use of fly ash and pond ash in construction has increased over the past three years, further demonstrating NHAI's commitment to sustainable practices. 'Through these initiatives, NHAI has successfully diverted 3,300 tonnes of non-hazardous waste from disposal within its own operations, reinforcing its dedication to circular economy principles," the report added. The NHAI has mandated the use of fly ash and pond ash in road and highway projects located within a 300-kilometre radius of coal-based thermal power plants, ensuring efficient utilisation of this by-product. 'NHAI has collaborated with regional suppliers for the procurement of the materials. Sourcing materials locally lowers transportation costs and delivery times, increases project efficiency, and contributes to overall goals. It also strengthens links with local businesses, which benefits the community's economy and promotes sustainable practice," the report added. Union minister Nitin Gadkari said that the second Sustainability Report from NHAI showcases the ministry's progress in integrating sustainability into every facet of operations—from environment-friendly construction practices and resource efficiency to biodiversity conservation, community development, and stakeholder engagement. 'With sustainability at the forefront, NHAI has adopted eco-friendly construction practices in infrastructure development, utilising recycled materials, inert waste from landfills, setting up solar power plants, creating surface water bodies, and implementing rainwater harvesting measures. Green technologies and comprehensive environmental management strategies have been integrated to address concerns related to biodiversity, wildlife, and local communities," he added. The NHAI operates as an autonomous organisation under the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) and is responsible for the development, maintenance, and management of national highways. With a 'forward-thinking" approach, NHAI is designed to not only address current challenges but also to future-proof India's road infrastructure. By integrating sustainable practices and embracing technological advancements, NHAI is 'poised to lead the transformation of India's highway network into a safer, greener, and more inclusive network", the report added. 'I didn't hesitate': Meet Dubai expat who gives wife second chance at life through organ donation
Amit Arora's life took an unexpected turn in 2017 when his wife, Ruchi, was suddenly diagnosed with jaundice. As her condition rapidly worsened, doctors urgently recommended a liver transplant. Without a moment's hesitation, Amit volunteered to donate a part of his liver. "I knew I had to help. I didn't hesitate for a second. It was about saving her life, and I would do whatever it took," Amit shared with Khaleej Times. Thanks to the life-saving transplant, both Amit and Ruchi are now living healthy lives in Dubai. Despite the major surgery, Amit has also maintained his own health, and Ruchi continues to thrive. Reflecting on his decision, Amit shared how it profoundly changed his perspective on life. 'Organ donation has the power to save lives and offer individuals a second chance at a fulfilling life. It's crucial we all consider it, especially after our passing. "I'm proud that my decision helped Ruchi, and I hope it inspires others to think about how they can make a difference,' he said. While his decision was initially met with questions, the reactions of those around him soon turned to admiration as they understood the significance of his selfless act. "It wasn't just about the surgery — it was about giving her the chance to live," Amit added. Legacy of giving Amit's commitment to organ donation didn't end with his own act of generosity. His father-in-law, who had pledged to donate his eyes, passed away shortly after Ruchi's transplant. True to his wishes, Amit and his family ensured that his eyes were donated, continuing a legacy of giving. Today, Arora remains a strong advocate for organ donation. 'I'm committed to pledging my organs, too, in the event of my passing. If my decision can save even one life, it will be worth it,' he added. Last year, the UAE set a new world record for the highest number of online organ donation registrations within a one-hour timeframe. Hayat, which means life in Arabic, is the National Programme for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues, established in September 2020 under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP). As earlier reported by Khaleej Times, organ utilisation rate (ORU) in the UAE stands at 4.2, which is one of the highest in the world. Way to help others In the same spirit of giving, Suchitra, a 48-year-old housewife who has been a UAE resident for over 21 years, has pledged to donate her organs upon her passing. "Philanthropy and social work have been close to my heart," she shared. Explaining her motivation, Suchitra said, 'By donating our organs, we don't just leave our bodies behind; we offer others the chance to live on through us. It's a gift of life, and I believe the Almighty will bless us for such acts of kindness,' she shared. She also mentioned that her family fully supports her decision, with her husband being an organ donor as well. Both of them are regular blood donors, further emphasising their commitment to giving back. Suchitra has pledged to donate all her organs and any other body parts that could help improve others' lives. Giving back to society Similarly, Rohit Garg, a 49-year-old CFO at Al Habtoor Group, has also committed to organ donation, viewing it as a powerful way to give back to society. 'I pledged to donate because I believe in community service. If my organs can help someone see, breathe, or live longer, it's a meaningful way to make a difference. Knowing I can save lives even after I'm gone is a powerful and fulfilling thought,' he shared with Khaleej Times. Rohit believes organ donation is vital for the community. 'It gives people a second chance at life. A single donor can save multiple lives, and that's an act of kindness. I encourage everyone to consider this gift — it's a simple decision that can bring hope to many families.' Although it wasn't an easy decision for his family to accept, they eventually understood that it came from a place of kindness. 'It took some discussions, but they respect my choice to help others even after I'm gone,' Rohit said. He has pledged to donate any viable organs after his passing, knowing his decision could save lives in the future. Under the Hayat programme, any person in the UAE aged 18 and above and holding an Emirates ID may register their desire to donate organs after brain death.
