Fatality as 2 people fall from overpass in CBD

Two people are dead after falling from an overpass in the Sydney CBD, closing lanes of the Harbour Bridge on Saturday. Police are investigating how the people came to fall from the Western Distributor onto Harbour Street at about 9.45am. A man and a woman, both believed to be in their 40s, died at the scene. 'Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command have established a crime scene and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,' NSW Police said in a statement. Two southbound lanes of the Harbour Bridge have been closed. Authorities also closed off Harbour Street in the Sydney CBD to southbound traffic. The Transport Management Centre has urged motorists to allow extra time due to the incident. 'Southbound motorists should continue on the Western Distributor, before taking the Harris Street off-ramp, Harris Street, William Henry Street and Pier Street to access Harbour Street and the city's south,' the centre said. A truck and pedestrian have collided on the M1 highway north of Newcastle, forcing the closure of all northbound vehicles. The crash happened at Beresfield, west of Newcastle, about 7.20pm, information from the Transport Management Centre shows. Live traffic maps show a 10km stretch of the highway blocked. 'All northbound lanes of the M1 Pacific Motorway are closed due to a crash involving a truck and a pedestrian at Beresfield,' the Transport Management Centre alert says. 'Northbound motorists can use the Hunter Expressway and John Renshaw Drive instead, and are advised to allow extra travel time. 'This diversion is suitable for vehicles up to 26 metres. 'Motorists are advised to follow directions of emergency services and traffic crews.'
