3 charged with stealing $2M from Brink's truck amid string of heists in Philadelphia-area

Three men, including a former Brink's employee, have been charged with stealing more than $2 million from an armored truck in Philadelphia, the first in a string of such heists that have occurred in the area this summer, prosecutors said Aug. 13. Daishaun "Daisha" Hughes-Murchison, 30, Brian Wallace, 31, and Trayvine Jackson, 31, all of Philadelphia, were arrested and charged with robbery interfering with interstate commerce, and use of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. All three had their initial court appearances last week. Jackson has been ordered detained, and Wallace and Hughes-Murchison will have detention hearings later this week, prosecutors said. The three men are accused of carrying out a brazen robbery of a Brink's armored car on June 21 in Philadelphia's Port Richmond neighborhood. The robbery took place at around 8 a.m. local time near a Home Depot store, according to court documents. A Brink's armored truck driver was walking down the rear alley of the store, which was part of his scheduled route, when two men approached the driver with AR-style rifles. The men forced the driver to the ground, and took both his company-issued firearm and keys, court documents state. While one of the men stayed with the driver, the other entered the truck and stole a "significant amount of cash," prosecutors said. The two men then fled from the scene in a black Hyundai Sonata and a third man was seen on surveillance footage following in a silver Ford Fusion, according to court documents. Investigators later discovered that the Ford Fusion belonged to Hughes-Murchison, and the Hyundai Sonata was rented by Wallace, who returned the vehicle a few hours after the robbery. Surveillance footage showed that after returning the Hyundai Sonata, Wallace got into Hughes-Murchison's vehicle and they drove off, prosecutors said. Cellphone records also revealed that Wallace and Jackson were in the area of the car rental site at the time, court documents alleged, and the phones of Wallace and Hughes-Murchison were also tracked to Home Depot at the time of the robbery. According to court documents, Brink's told investigators that Jackson had been a Brink's employee until he was suspended and terminated after an internal investigation. Brink's robbery spree: DC men behind $1.2M robbery spree sentenced to decades in prison Several Brink's armored truck robberies reported in Philadelphia-area Following the June 21 armed robbery, police reported three other incidents involving armored transport vehicles in and around Philadelphia. On June 26, a Loomis truck driver making a delivery at an Aldi store in the Lawncrest neighborhood of northeast Philadelphia was approached by two gunmen, CBS News and 6abc Action News reported. The suspects disarmed the driver and fled with about $1,000, according to the television stations. Then on July 2, police said another armored truck robbery involving Brink's occurred outside a Dollar General in the Holmesburg Shopping Center in northeast Philadelphia, NBC Philadelphia reported. The suspects, including one who was armed with an AR-style rifle, attempted to access the truck but were unable to due to the vehicle's security locking system, according to the station. And on July 15, a Brink's employee opened fire at two men whom he alleged attempted to rob him in northeast Philadelphia, NBC Philadelphia reported. The men fled from the scene, and no one was injured in the incident, according to the station. 'Largest jewelry heist in US history': $100M in diamonds, Rolex watches, emeralds stolen Police investigating another armored truck robbery this week Police in Cheltenham Township, a community bordering Philadelphia, are also investigating another armored truck robbery that occurred at around 10:28 a.m. local time on Aug. 12. The Cheltenham Township Police Department said in a statement on social media that officers responded to a report of a robbery at an H-Mart store. Investigators determined that two suspects had robbed a Brink's armored vehicle, "escaping with a large quantity of (U.S. currency)," police said. One suspect was armed with an AR-15-style pistol while the other was armed with a handgun, according to police. The suspects also stole the armored vehicle driver's handgun during the robbery before fleeing in a black Acura TLX. The vehicle was later found in west Philadelphia, police said, adding there were no injuries reported in the incident. Cheltenham police told the Associated Press and local media that the suspects stole between $700,000 and $800,000. Police are investigating whether the robbery is related to the four other recent incidents in the Philadelphia area, according to the AP and NBC News. Three men arrested for allegedly boosting $2 million from armored truck parked at a Home Depot

Three men in Philadelphia are in police custody after they allegedly stole $2 million from a Brinks armored car, according to local police. Investigators claim that the robbery, which took place outside a Home Depot store, was an inside job, according to ABC 6. Daishaun "Daisha" Hughes-Murchison, 30; Brian Wallace, 31; and Trayvine Jackson, 31, all of Philadelphia, were arrested and have been charged with robbery that interferes with interstate commerce and the use of a firearm in a violent crime, according to police. All three appeared in court for the first time last week. The alleged robbery occurred in June. A judge ordered Jackson to be detained, while Wallace and Hughes-Murchison will stand for detention hearings this week. On June 21, the trio allegedly robbed the Brinks car while it was near a Home Depot in Philadelphia's Port Richmond area. Prosecutors believe that the Brinks driver was walking down an alley behind the Home Depot when the trio emerged with assault rifles. The men allegedly forced the driver of the truck to the ground and took his pistol and his keys, according to police. Investigators said that one man kept watch over the driver while the others removed money from the truck. The men allegedly fled the scene in a pair of vehicles, one of which had temporary Virginia tags. The vehicle with the Virginia tags was a rental, which was returned a few hours after the robbery. The second car allegedly belongs to Hughes-Murchison. Surveillance video at the car rental company reportedly captured Wallace returning the rental and then entering Hughes-Murchison's vehicle. Investigators also pulled the men's cell records and allegedly found that the men had been making calls in the vicinity of the heist around the time that it occurred. According to court records, Brinks officials told investigators that Jackson was an employee with the company but was suspended and then fired after an internal investigation. Police are reportedly working to determine if the robbery is connected to another Brinks armored vehicle robbery in Cheltenham — just a few miles north of Port Richmond — that occurred a day before the arrests were announced.

3 arrested in June Brinks truck robbery outside Home Depot in Philadelphia

Three men were arrested for allegedly stealing more than $2 million in a Brinks truck robbery outside a Home Depot in Port Richmond in June, according to Philadelphia's top federal prosecutor and police. Daishaun Hughes-Murchison, Trayvine Jackson and Brian Wallace are charged with Hobbs Act robbery and use of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, U.S. Attorney David Metcalf said in a news release Wednesday. The Brinks truck robbery happened outside a Home Depot in the 2500 block of Castor Avenue around 8 a.m. on June 21. Two of the suspects allegedly approached the Brinks driver from behind with AR-style rifles, forced the driver to the ground, disarmed him and took his keys, federal prosecutors said. One of the suspects stayed with the driver while the other stole more than $2 million from the truck, according to federal prosecutors. The two men then fled the area in a black Hyundai Sonata with temporary Virginia tags with a third man in a silver Ford Fusion with a Pennsylvania tag following them, federal prosecutors said. Investigators said the Ford Fusion was registered to Hughes-Murchison, while Wallace rented the Hyundai Sonata and returned the car hours after the robbery. Wallace was seen in surveillance video getting into Hughes-Murchison's car after returning the Sonata, federal prosecutors said. Federal prosecutors said Jackson was a Brinks employee. Jackson was suspended and later fired by the company, according to Metcalf. The three men were arrested on Aug. 5, six weeks after the alleged heist, FBI agent Wayne Jacobs told CBS News Philadelphia. Jacobs said law enforcement recovered most of the stolen money as well as a number of long weapons and handguns. The FBI agent said some of the money was spent on items such as jewelry, clothes and other fixed assets. "If this is the type of activity you're going to engage in, if you look at the timeline, six weeks from the time of the incident until the time of the arrest," Jacobs said, "it's just a matter of time before you're held accountable for your actions." The announcement comes a day after another Brinks truck was robbed in the Philadelphia region. Five armored truck robberies have been reported since June in the area. The latest happened in Elkins Park, Montgomery County, just outside city limits. Cheltenham Police Lt. Andrew Snyder said police are looking for a possible connection between Tuesday's robbery and similar ones in Philadelphia. Snyder said Tuesday's incident was the first within his department's jurisdiction. "There's certainly a possibility one job inspired the other," Jacobs said. "I think at this point in the investigation, it's too early for us to understand why one thing happened, why we've seen a string of these put together." Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said "there's obviously a pattern around armored cars," but added that PPD constantly investigates patterns around all sorts of crimes in the city. "We have other patterns that we look to identify across the city where individuals engage in specific types of behavior, going after specific types of targets," Bethel said, "so we're constantly working to address those as well." Jacobs said law enforcement is investigating whether the June 21 incident has a connection to the other robberies. He added the task force that arrested Hughes-Murchison, Jackson and Wallace will also be investigating the Montgomery County robbery. "It's certainly possible that there are connections between several of the jobs," Jacobs said, "but at this point in the investigation, it's too early to say definitely." The FBI Philadelphia Violent Crime Task Force and the city's police department are handling the Fox and Eva Andersen contributed to this report.
