Chance meeting leads to successful charity concert

Celtic choral connections between three choirs, born from a meeting at a bowls competition in Westport, Ireland, culminated in a memorable charity concert at St Mary's Church, Tenby. Pembroke Farmers' Club member Ed Morris, a baritone with Pembroke and District Male Voice, initiated this connection. He met a member of Tredagh Singers from Drogheda, a sister of Ed's neighbour, at the competition. 18 months later, the Tredagh Singers joined with the Narberth-based Serendipity Choir and Pembroke choristers at Tenby. The well-supported concert raised more than £3,000 for Prostate Cymru and Pancreatic Cancer UK charities. Each choir was applauded for their individual performances before joining for a finale of 'Calon Lan' and 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. The MC was Brian Harries, chairman of the Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru. Juliet Rossiter, the musical director of both Pembrokeshire choirs, conducted 14 individual pieces. The accompanists were Heather Williams (Serendipity) and William Lambert (Pembroke). Gifts were exchanged, with Tredagh chairman Vincent Moore presenting a framed score of 'Calon Lan' and a bottle of local whiskey. In return, Pembroke chairman Huw Morgan gave a print of Barafundle, one of the county's well-known beaches. Both local choirs hope to continue their connection with the Tredagh Singers in the future, both in Wales and Ireland.

Three choirs unite in Tenby for charity concert

Over £3,000 raised for Prostate Cymru and Pancreatic Cancer UK A CHANCE encounter at a bowls competition in Westport, on Ireland's west coast, sparked a memorable evening of music and friendship at St Mary's Church, Tenby. The connection began when Ed Morris, a baritone with Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir and a member of Pembroke Farmers' Club, struck up a conversation with a member of the Tredagh Singers from Drogheda, north of Dublin. The singer, coincidentally the sister of Ed's neighbour, was also attending the competition. The well-attended evening raised over £3,000 in aid of Prostate Cymru and Pancreatic Cancer UK. Each choir performed its own programme to warm applause before joining together for a stirring finale of the Welsh classic Calon Lân and You'll Never Walk Alone. Brian Harries, chairman of the Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru and a member of Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir, served as MC and also took part in the final numbers alongside long-serving Pembroke tenor John Kilcoyne. Juliet Rossiter, musical director of both local choirs, conducted a total of 14 pieces on the night. Accompanists were Heather Williams for Serendipity and William Lambert for Pembroke. During the event, gifts were exchanged as a token of friendship. Tredagh chairman Vincent Moore presented a framed score of Calon Lân, adorned with silhouettes of Drogheda landmarks, along with a bottle of local whiskey. In return, Pembroke chairman Huw Morgan gifted a print of Barafundle Bay—one of Pembrokeshire's most iconic beaches. Members of both Welsh choirs expressed hopes for future exchanges with the Tredagh Singers, both in Wales and across the Irish Sea. Farmers' club organising a charity concert in Tenby

Pembroke Farmers' Club is holding the event to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK and Prostate Cymru. The concert will be on Friday, May 16 at 7pm at St Mary's Church, Tenby, as a tribute to a long-standing member who died from pancreatic cancer last year. The club, with more than 200 male members, also decided to support Prostate Cymru to emphasise the importance of regular self-checks and recognising early disease signs. A visiting Irish choir, the Tredagh Singers from Drogheda, has been secured to perform at the concert. They will be joined by Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir and the Serendipity Ladies Choir from Narberth. The Tredagh Singers, founded in 1970 as St Peter's Choral Group and renamed in 1990, have won choral competitions in Ireland, the UK, and further afield, including awards at Cheltenham, Chester, Edinburgh, the Isle of Man, and the Welsh National Eisteddfod. Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir, active for more than 72 years, has performed at various venues and supported numerous worthy causes, raising substantial amounts of money over the years. The Serendipity Ladies Choir, formed nine years ago by musical director Juliet Rossiter, now has 50 members. Brian Harries, chairman of the Pembrokeshire Branch of Prostate Cymru, will host the evening at St Mary's Church. All proceeds from the event will be divided equally between the two charities. For more information or to make a donation, contact Ed Morris on 01646 661247 or email lovestonfarm@ Tickets for the concert are available from Dales Music Shop, Tenby, NFU Offices in Narbeth and Pembroke, and Pembroke Town Hall and Museum.
