‘The Simpsons' Upcoming Guests Include Kieran Culkin, Viola Davis, Idris Elba; Matt Groening on How to Liberate Parents from MAGA: ‘Delete Fox News'
Kieran Culkin ('Succession'), Glenn Howerton ('It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia'), Albert Brooks and Cole Escola ('Oh Mary') are among the guest stars stopping by Springfield during the upcoming Season 37 of 'The Simpsons,' the show's producers announced Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con. Idris Elba, Michael Keaton and Viola Davis will be guest starring on that episode, which will feature an opening from guest animator Stan Kelly (from The Onion). Among those on stage: creator Matt Groening, executive producers Matt Selman and Mike Price, director Matt Faughnan and consulting producer/director David Silverman. 'I honestly thought 36 was where we were going to end it,' Groening joked. 'No, there's no end in sight. We're going to keep going. We're going to go until somebody dies. When you-know-who dies, 'The Simpsons' predicts the there will be dancing in the streets. Except President Vance will ban dancing.' What's coming up next is the show's landmark 800th episode, which will air on Fox in February 2026. 'It's a big deal to do 800 shows, and so we're going to be doing two brand new original episodes that night,' Selman said. 'They're top secret for now, but I promise you, they'll be the best 800th episode of anything you've ever seen.' After the recent 'Coldplay' incident, in which the Astronomer CEO and its HR head were caught in a tryst, a deep fake claimed that 'The Simpsons' predicted it. Selman warned fans not to fall for these 'Simpsons predicts the future' memes. 'Who could be so dumb?' he said. 'Of all our 800 episodes we did, that those two dumb white folks — I don't what to call, the takes are done — like, who could think, who has such little reactive intelligence that this is in 'The Simpsons'? And of course, the answer is hundreds and hundreds of millions of people! But when you see something that claims to be a 'Simpsons' prediction, just think for one second. Could that have possibly been on the show? That's all, just think one second and then comment on the thing 'they are magic, they're wizards, they did it again.' Groening joking said he had the counterpoint: 'We are time travelers.' Here were some of his upcoming predictions: ''The Simpsons' predicts Elon Musk will be the first man to land on Mars. Amazingly, he will crash land on Mars. But he will radio back that he is marooned there forever. And most emotionally of all, he will be able to hear the cheering all the way.' Also: 'America will return the Statue of Liberty to France and North America remembers what the word Liberty means.' And most importantly: ''The Simpsons' predicts kids across America will liberate their Republican parents from the cult of MAGA. And here's how you do it. Grab the TV remote, go to menu, go to controls, vertical controls, look for channel list and delete Fox News.' As part of the event, the 'Simpsons' team attempted to play a game that Selman dubbed 'Simpsons Comic-Con Pictionary,' but the technology was not cooperating. Nonetheless, during that segment, guest animators/writers Michael Cusack ('Smiling Friends') and Mike McMahan ('Solar Opposites') came on stage to also talk and ask about 'The Simpsons.' And of course, addressed was the recent surprising uptick in online hot takes about Marge Simpson dying in the show's Season 36 finale. As Selman recently told Variety, she had done no such thing and that what happened in the recent season finale of the series was not canon, since 'there is no canon,' he said at the time. ''The Simpsons' doesn't even have canon!' 'She's like in every episode,' Selman said at the panel. 'There's a new economy of headlines that try to trick you. I call it 'trick bait.' The million headlines saying 'Simpsons' kills Marge, and then even those articles admit it, of course, 'they didn't do we just wanted you to read our headline.' The Simpsons taps The Onion cartoonist Stan Kelly for "Treehouse Of Horror XXXVI"
The Simpsons announced a whole smattering of cool guest stars for its upcoming 37th season, including Cole Escola, Kieran Culkin, Glenn Howerton, and Albert Brooks, today during its San Diego Comic-Con Panel this afternoon. But it also announced a pretty cool (if we do say so ourselves) guest artist for this year's 'Treehouse Of Horror XXXVI': cartoonist Stan Kelly, whose work you may recognize from our former sibling publication The Onion. Per Variety, the animator will contribute the opening of the Halloween-themed episode, which typically expand beyond the confines of the typical couch gag (even if those couch gags themselves have also expanded in recent years). Those on stage, which included series creator Matt Groening, didn't offer too much more about the episode, other than the news that Idris Elba, Michael Keaton and Viola Davis will lend their voices to it. However, Groening and company did take some time to respond to the recent pop culture news of the day and people's attempts to claim that The Simpsons predicted them. After the recent viral kerfuffle at a Coldplay concert, someone created a fake Simpsons frame to claim that the moment already happened in one of the nearly 800 episodes of the series. 'Who could think, who has such little reactive intelligence that this is in The Simpsons?' wondered executive producer Matt Selman (via Variety). 'And of course, the answer is hundreds and hundreds of millions of people! But when you see something that claims to be a Simpsons prediction, just think for one second. Could that have possibly been on the show?' When asked to make a prediction of his own, Groening suggested that Elon Musk will make it to Mars, but get marooned there and will be able to hear all of us cheering all the way on Earth. Groening also predicted, 'When you know who dies, The Simpsons predicts [that] there will be dancing in the streets. Except President Vance will ban dancing.' We'll have to see if any of these predictions make it in the show when The Simpsons returns for season 37 this fall. More from A.V. Marge lives! Here are 3 other ‘Simpsons' characters that returned from the grave — and 3 who stayed dead
You can't keep a good Simpsons matriarch down... or up in heaven for that matter. The Simpsons recently ended its 36th season on Fox with a flash-forward episode revealing that Marge Simpson (voiced by Julie Kavner) has gone to her great reward — in this case an afterlife where she's married to Ringo Starr. Far from being thrilled for her eternal soul, fans freaked out about Marge's future fate. And their fury forced executive producer, Matt Selman, to go on the record reminding everyone that death is an elastic concept in the show's animated universe. "Since the The Simpsons future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they're all different every time. Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago." As longtime viewers know, Springfield is regularly littered in corpses after every "Treehouse of Horror" installment, only to see those characters walking around again in non-zombie form immediately afterwards. And like Selman said, trips to the future don't come with permanent death sentences. Even in the present day, some characters have seemingly shuffled off their mortal coil only to return without missing a beat. But there have also been several instances where Springfield's Grim Reaper has refused to allow characters a return trip. Here are three Simpsons that have famously stayed dead — and three that have followed in Marge's sainted footsteps back to the land of the living. Larry Dalrymple Nearly one year before Marge's supposed death, the series really did kill off Moe's Tavern regular Larry the Barfly. And he died like he lived — quietly over a pint of beer. "We really wanted to use Larry's death as a way to show that even the most peripheral people in our lives have dignity and worth, and that we really shouldn't take anyone for granted,' co-executive producer Tim Long told Variety after the episode aired. Maude Flanders Ned's better half was knocked over a Springfield Speedway railing by a T-shirt cannon way back in Season 11. And even though she's popped back up in the frame from time to time in the decades since, her sudden passing has stayed canon. Edna Krabappel Springfield Elementary's best teacher was retired from the cast following the 2013 death of Marcia Wallace, who won an Outstanding Voice-Over Performance Emmy award alongside five of her costars in 1992. The Season 32 episode "Diary Queen" officially closed the book on the character, using archival recordings featuring Wallace to craft her exit. That's par for the course for how the creative team has handled real-life passings. Two of Phil Hartman's notable characters — Z-list actor Troy McClure and fly-by-night lawyer Lionel Hutz — were benched after his 1998 death. Dr. Nick Riviera Despite being apparently crushed to a pulp during the course of The Simpsons Movie, the not-at-all-reputable doctor is still selling his snake oil treatments to Springfield residents. He does seem to know the cure for death, though... Fat Tony The Joe Mantegna-voiced mob boss suffered a heart attack in Season 22's "Donnie Fatso," seemingly leaving the town free of crime. But his place was quickly taken by his in-shape cousin "Fit Tony," also voiced by the Criminal Minds star. In the years since, though, Fit Tony lost all that muscle tone and morphed back into Fat Tony as if the latter never left. Moe Szyslak Following a close encounter with Lady Gaga in the Season 23 finale "Lisa Goes Gaga," the surly bartender ends up beneath the wheels of a train. But the lights are back on again at Moe's in Season 24, indicating that any fatal injuries he sustained were just mere flesh wounds.
