‘We need you.' Amarius Mims shares message to Shemar Stewart as Bengals open camp
If there's one player who understands the importance of training camp practice in Cincinnati, it's Amarius Mims. The Bengals selected Mims with the No.18 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft out of Georgia. Mims went on to start 13 games for the Bengals last season. Cincinnati's first-round pick from this year, Shemar Stewart, didn't report for training camp due to an ongoing contact dispute with the team. Stewart has yet to take a snap with the Bengals because he has yet to sign his contract and opted not to sign the participation waiver agreement that would have allowed him to practice during the voluntary offseason program. The Bengals have made their stance clear on Stewart and that is he needs to be in Cincinnati with his teammates practicing. He is missing invaluable reps and as Mims said, even more importantly, the luxury of being around veterans to help learn the playbook faster. 'You don't want to not know what to do, that's worse than giving up a sack,' Mims said. 'It shows lack of preparation.' Mims made it a point to pick the brains of Trent Brown and Orlando Brown Jr. at every moment last year. So much so that Mims said he felt he probably 'aggravated him to the max' when talking about how many questions he asked Brown Jr. He also said there was nothing more valuable than being able to spend time with former guard Alex Cappa. Mims credits his 1-on-1 time with Brown Jr., Cappa and Brown as the main reason he was able to win a starting job heading into last season. 'People don't realize what helped me stay with the 1s (starters) other than Trent going down was (Alex) Cappa beside me helping me with the playbook,' Mims said. 'He sat down with me every day and made sure I knew the plays so going into camp I knew all of the plays. I didn't want to get out there and not know what I was doing.' Mims refrained from commenting too much on the situation with Stewart stating it's hard because he has a different agent and a different situation than he did coming into the NFL. He did tell The Enquirer he's reached out to Stewart multiple times and is focused on his friendship with Stewart while also emphasizing how much the team is relying on him. And while their situations were different, they are similar in the fact the Bengals drafted Stewart hoping he can have a rookie season similar to the one Mims had. 'Whenever he does come back, I just hope he hits the ground running,' Mims said. 'I know he's a great football player; I watched his film. No team is going to pick you at No. 17 if you can't play football. I just hope he's got this mind right when he comes in and attacks the playbook because we're going to need him. He's going to be a very valuable piece to our defense, I know that for a fact. I pray he gets his deal done quick; we're going to need him.' Updated depth chart following the Texans' signing of OT Trent Brown
Updated depth chart following the Texans' signing of OT Trent Brown Welcome to the madness, Trent Brown Following the signing of the veteran offensive tackle to a one-year deal worth $3 million, the Houston Texans have 74 players on their roster entering the upcoming NFL draft. Some are veterans who have been locked in with the team for years. Others are newcomers looking to prove they belong in the starting lineup. Then, there's Brown, a veteran former Pro Bowler who only played three games last season before suffering a season-ending torn right patellar tendon. Since being drafted out of Florida, Brown has started in 96 of the 103 games and played both left and right tackle tackle. Cam Robinson, who inked a one-year, $12 million deal earlier this week, is expected to take over for Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who was traded in a blockbuster move with the Washington Commanders built around four future draft picks. Robinson isn't guaranteed to be the long-term answer for the Texans as C.J. Stroud's new blindside protector. He allowed seven sacks and gave up the sixth-most pressures among offensive tackles during his 11 games with the Vikings. Right tackle Tytus Howard, who could shift inside to right guard depending on the progression of second-round pick Blake Fisher, is expected to start outside during training camp. As for Brown, he likely will be the permanent swing tackle, seeing reps on both sides while trying to compete for a starting role. Signing Brown solves a small, but evident problem as Houston inches closer to being on the clocker. The draft still more than a month away, so here's an updated look at the team's (projected) depth chart after Robinson's signing. Quarterback (3) QB1: C.J. Stroud QB2: Davis Mills QB2: Kedon Slovis Mills returns as Stroud's backup. Expect the Texans to add a fourth-string quarterback following the draft to bring in for training camp. Running back (5) RB1: Joe Mixon RB2: Dameon Pierce RB3: Dare Ogunbowale RB4: J.J. Taylor RB5: Jawhar Jordan It's the Mixon show for another year. Houston could be interested in targeting a Day 3 running back for the long haul since Pierce, Taylor and Ogunbowale will all be free agents after the season. Fullback (3) FB1: Jakob Johnson FB2: British Brooks FB3: Troy Hairston Johnson has special teams experience and a previous relationship with new Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley. There a legit chance for him to make the final 53-man roster. Wide receiver (8) WR1: Nico Collins WR2: Christian Kirk WR3: John Metchie III WR4: Justin Watson WR5: Xavier Hutchinson WR6: Jared Wayne ST: Braxton Berrios Injured Reserve: Tank Dell With Dell missing most of the season, Houston needs at least one target in the draft to take pressure off Stroud. Kirk joining the fold should also mark the end of the short-lived Stefon Diggs era. Tight end (3) TE1: Dalton Schultz TE2: Brevin Jordan TE3: Cade Stover There's a chance for Jordan and Stover to pass up Schultz after a down season, but all three should be on the active roster. It wouldn't be surprising to see Houston take a flyer on one of the later-round tight ends for depth purposes. Offensive Line (10) LT: Tytus Howard , Trent Brown , Trent Brown LG: Laken Tomlinson , Nick Broeker , Nick Broeker C: Jarrett Patterson , Juice Scruggs , Juice Scruggs RG: Tytus Howard , Ed Ingram, , Ed Ingram, RT: Blake Fisher OR Tytus Howard, Zach Thomas Robinson might be the best fit for left tackle entering the draft, but Houston best be walking out of the draft with at least two potential starters and a backup. Look for a new left guard, tackle and potential center to come during the seven rounds next month to be at training camp in August. Defensive line (13) DE: Will Anderson Jr. , Darrell Taylor, Dylan Horton, Casey Toolhill , Darrell Taylor, Dylan Horton, Casey Toolhill DT: Sheldon Rankins , Mario Edwards Jr. , Mario Edwards Jr. DT: Tim Settle, Kurt Hinish, Tommy Togiai Kurt Hinish, Tommy Togiai DE: Danielle Hunter, Denico Autry, Derek Barnett, Solomon Byrd Maybe the Texans shore up the interior pass rush with an early-round pick, but they're set on the edge for years to come with nine different options, including three backups who could start for most teams. Linebacker (6) LB1: Azeez Al-Shaair , Jamal Hill , Jamal Hill LB2: Christian Harris , Henry To'oTo'o , Henry To'oTo'o ST: Nick Niemann, Jake Hansen Maybe Houston added another linebacker on Day 3 to be a long-term plan as Harris enters a contract year. Al-Shaair and To'oTo'o should be good through 2026, while Niemann is taking over for Neville Hewitt as the star special teams player. Cornerback (7) CB1: Derek Stingley Jr. CB2: Kamari Lassiter Slot: Jalen Pitre CB4: Ronald Darby ST: Tremon Smith Depth: Junior Gregory, D'Angelo Ross After getting paid $90 million, Stingley is locked in for the long haul as Houston's top defensive player. If Lassiter and Pire improve off promising 2024 campaigns, the Texans might have the best defense in the league. Safety (5) S1: C.J. Gardner-Johnson S2: Calen Bullock Dime: Jimmie Ward S4: Russ Yeast ST: M.J. Stewart Landing a talent in Gardner-Johnson to shore up the back end of the defense could be a game-changer in the playoffs. He's exactly the type of player that was missing once Pitre went out with a chest injury. Special teams (3) K: Ka'imi Fairbairn P: Tommy Townsend LS: Tucker Addington For the first time in 15 years, someone else besides Jon Weeks will be snapping a football. It truly is the end of an era.

Texans find swing tackle in former Pro Bowler Trent Brown
Add another offensive lineman into the mix for the Houston Texans. According to reports, the Texans have agreed to terms with veteran offensive tackle Trent Brown on a one-year deal worth up to $3 million. Brown will compete with Tytus Howard, Blake Fisher and recently signed Cam Robinson for first-team reps during training camp while looking to make the active 53-man roster. After signing with Cincinnati last offseason, a season-ending ruptured patellar tendon limited Brown to just three games. Before that, Brown was named the starting right tackle for the Bengals and looked overall promising in his brief stint blocking for Pro Bowler Joe Burrow. Before signing with the Bengals, Brown spent three seasons with the New England Patriots, so he has a previous relationship with both Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley and new offensive line coach Cole Popovich. Brown also was a Pro Bowl honoree in 2019 as a member of the then-Oakland Raiders. The #Texans have signed OT Trent Brown to a one year deal worth up to $3 million. Per @adamschefter — Dylan Delgatto (@DDelgattoNFL) March 21, 2025 Durability has hindered Brown's growth and playing time over the past decade in the pros. Since 2018, the 31-year-old has played in all his teams' regular-season games just once in the past six years. Since being drafted out of Florida in 2015, he's appeared in 103 contests, starting at both left and right tackle. The Texans were looking for a swing tackle to shore up the offensive line after Laremy Tunsil was traded to the Washington Commanders for four future draft picks. Brown can play both sides and should at least be a stable cheap option behind Fisher, Robinson or a potential rookie long-term heir in Houston. Trent Brown agrees to terms with Texans
The Texans have struck a deal with another veteran offensive tackle. Agent Drew Rosenhaus told reporters that his client Trent Brown has agreed to a one-year deal with Houston. The deal is worth up to $3 million. The Texans reached a deal with former Jaguar and Viking Cam Robinson earlier this week in a move that should fill the left tackle hole they opened by trading Laremy Tunsil to the Commanders. Brown could join Blake Fisher in the mix for the starting job at right tackle or serve as a swing tackle this year. He played three games for the Bengals before tearing his patellar tendon last season. He had previous runs as a starter for the Patriots, Raiders, and 49ers with some of his time in New England coming at the same time that Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley was on the Patriots staff.
