Chiefs DB Trent McDuffie discusses his status among the league's elite cornerbacks
At Monday's training camp press conference, Kansas City Chiefs defensive back Trent McDuffie responded to the increased visibility he has garnered around the league for his exceptional play. "I think every year is a new year, and you kind of want to prove that you still have it. You know what I mean? Even in nickel, I feel like I still have (something) to prove," said McDuffie, "Even when I'm outside first, anytime you step on this field, I think the whole team feels like they still have something to prove. I think that just makes it a little bit easier when you go out there and see the guys to your left, the guy to your right, all giving 100% effort. And this year for me, it's really just about how well I can consistently be doing my job, you know, week in, week out." The former Washington Huskies star debuted on the annual NFL Top 100 countdown at No. 81 this offseason, showing increased respect from around the league. The multiple-time All-Pro's career continues to evolve to new heights yearly as the team's top cornerback. "I know things happen throughout the season, but not letting those small bumps affect me mentally," said McDuffie. "Not letting those small bumps knock me off what I was originally doing and continue to just push through, keep thriving. That's what we do here at St. Joe. You got to push through these hot days, you got to push through these long drive drills, and that's something that I really respect about (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid and how he does this, and I think it really helps us through the season." McDuffie was a first-team All-Pro in 2023 and a second-team selection in 2024.

McDuffie, a former University of Washington Husky and first-round pick, has developed into a lockdown defender during his first three seasons in Kansas City and put his ball-hawking prowess on display at Chiefs Training Camp this week. When star quarterback Patrick Mahomes targeted one of his receivers at practice on Friday, July 25, McDuffie stepped in to pick off the two-time MVP and proceeded to evade his teammates in a mock interception return. Chiefs scouting report: Arizona State Sun Devils CB Keith Abney II
The Kansas City Chiefs face losing several cornerbacks through free agency next offseason, including Nazeeh Johnson, Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams. Those three players contributed more than 1,450 defensive snaps across the regular and postseason in 2024. The Chiefs should prioritize adding at least one new cornerback early in the 2026 NFL draft. Steve Spagnuolo's defense features two quality coverage options in Kristian Fulton and All-Pro Trent McDuffie. McDuffie plays both outside and in the slot, but deploying full-time in the nickel draws out his full potential. That leaves a revolving door at the second outside cornerback position. Watson and third round rookie Nohl Williams should see the most snaps opposite of Fulton in 2025, but 2026 prospects like Arizona State's Keith Abney II offer a way to upgrade the position permanently. Abney is undersized at 5'11", 185 lbs., but his frame doesn't have a significant negative impact on his performance. He's a potential true lockdown cornerback thanks to twitchy footwork and exceptional instincts. Abney decelerates and breaks for routes at the same time as the wide receiver, allowing him to smother throwing lanes. Abney allows some separation over the middle of the field on posts and slants but recovers quickly to contest catches or close throwing lanes. He remains poised and doesn't bite on double moves, limiting the number of clean losses on his tape. Abney's speed isn't elite, but he doesn't suffer from significant issues in downfield coverage. His calm approach and masterful use of leverage limit opportunities for quarterbacks to test him downfield. He compresses outside releases along the sideline to eliminate the passing window and threatens to undercut inside releases. Abney also excels in zone coverage. His awareness of routes developing at different depths helps him recover to or sink under routes crossing into his zone downfield. He also knows when offenses try to disguise shorter routes with window dressing. Abney's processing speed and instincts make him a big-play threat in zone coverage. Abney fires downhill in run defense, but his size limits his ability to stack and deconstruct blocks. He has stretches of quality play as a tackler but occasionally defaults to throwing a shoulder instead of wrapping up the ball carrier. Abney projects as a top 40 prospect in the 2026 NFL draft and could secure a spot in the first round with a strong showing in 2025. Revealed: Kansas City Chiefs identify next target after signing Trey Smith to historic $94million deal
The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly identified the next star who they will offer a contract extension - just one day after handing Trey Smith a historic deal. On Tuesday, the Chiefs reached an agreement with Smith over a new four-year, $94million contract, hours before Tuesday's franchise-tag deadline. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Smith's new deal, which includes $70m guaranteed, makes him the highest-paid guard in NFL history. And, according to reports, the Chiefs are not stopping there as they look to bounce back from their Super Bowl drubbing at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles. ESPN now claim that the Chiefs will turn their attention to cornerback Trent McDuffie - who currently has two years left on his rookie deal. Speaking on ESPN's NFL Live, Nate Taylor said: 'Based on Sauce Gardner's deal, the Chiefs will now shift their focus to All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, who you could argue has been the more productive player. 'Can they get a deal done with Trent McDuffie before training camp, before the regular season starts?' Fellow cornerback Gardner has put pen to paper on a four-year contract worth $120.4million in New York, which gives him a yearly salary of $30.1m. The lucrative extension includes $60m guaranteed and will keep him at MetLife Stadium through 2030. McDuffie, meanwhile, was a first-round pick back in 2022 and has a fifth-year option in his current deal, which the Chiefs already picked up. He isn't set to become a free agent until 2027. However, the Chiefs appear keen on tying down the defensive stalwart to a fresh deal after impressive displays last year. He recorded two interceptions, 13 pass breakups, 45 solo tackles, six tackles for loss and one forced fumble in 16 games last season. Meanwhile, Chiefs star Smith is set to earn the highest-average annual salary and most guaranteed money ever handed to a guard, according to reports. With both Smith and Creed Humphrey on the offensive line, Kansas City now has the highest-paid guard and center in the NFL after agreeing a record deal with the former. Humphrey signed a four-year extension of his own worth $72m with $50m guaranteed in August 2024, which remains the record for a center. The Chiefs used their franchise tag on Smith in February in order to maintain control of the coveted lineman for another season, albeit at the hefty salary of $23.4m. Smith and Kansas City are coming off a heavy Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles – a defeat he believes will make them stronger going forward. 'I think you need losses in life to learn from it,' Smith recently told Kay Adams' Up and Adams podcast.
