Remarkable Jayden Daniels' statistic puts him in class by himself

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels made a lot of history in 2024. It seemed like Daniels was breaking another league record or franchise record every week. Daniels' success wasn't only in his stats. He led the Commanders to their best season in 33 years, including a surprising trip to the NFC championship game. But those stats were pretty impressive. Advertisement When fans and analysts talk about stats, you often hear about touchdowns, total yards, completion percentage, or some version of analytics. However, sometimes the simple statistics can be the most impressive. Sometimes, it's even the ones you didn't even know were a stat. There was one stretch last season when longtime punter Tress Way did not punt once — in multiple games. That's how good Washington's offense was, specifically Daniels. CBS Sports pointed out a statistic that not only puts Daniels in elite company, but also in a class by himself. Yes, you read that correctly. In 20 career starts, Daniels had three games where his team did not punt or turn the ball over. Four of the most legendary quarterback names ever — Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Patrick Mahomes — have combined for two such games in 993 career starts. Advertisement That's a remarkable statistic. Daniels was terrific all season, but seemed to get even better late in the season when Washington made its playoff push. As good as Daniels was as a passer, he also led the Commanders in rushing. It's too soon to mention Daniels in the same company as the above quarterbacks, but he's off to a great start and spent the offseason ensuring there will be no sophomore slump. Commanders punter Tress Way receives hero's welcome

Commanders punter Tress Way receives hero's welcome Tress Way is the longest-tenured player on Washington's roster, and it's not even close. Claimed off waivers on Aug. 20, 2014, Way has punted in all but one game over the last 11 seasons for the Commanders. Way missed one game for Washington toward the end of the 2022 season. Way has enjoyed an excellent career, averaging 46.9 yards per punt and a 41.9 net average. He's landed over 38% of his punts inside the 20-yard line and has only 47 career touchbacks. Way is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and a one-time All-Pro pick. Washington's longtime punter also happens to be one of the franchise's most popular players. Way is beloved by fans for his involvement in the community and his family, particularly his son, Beau. However, heading into this offseason, Way was a free agent. Turning 35 in April, there were questions about whether the Commanders would re-sign Way or look for a younger, cheaper option. That would never happen, as general manager Adam Peters and Way agreed to a one-year deal just before free agency opened two weeks ago. Last week, Way was in Ashburn to sign his new contract, and he couldn't believe how the Commanders rolled out the red carpet for him. Way said Peters and head coach Dan Quinn wanted him to pick a time when he was heading into the team facility to sign his new contract. Why? "I parked the car, and I'm with my family, and, like the reality of getting my family, opening up car seats and things like that, and pulling kids into the facility," Way said. "And I walk in, and all of our coaches, all the front office, music playing, screaming, yelling, high-fiving, hugs around. I just, I'm just so, I'm pinching myself, dude. This is so surreal, 12 years here, and I made it a point to just tell AP, 'I've been here for 12 years, I didn't even know teams even did things like this.' I've never been through it, and I just wanted to thank them. And so, it's such a fun and exciting time to be a part of this franchise. And I've been thankful to be here every year I've been here, but there's just a lot of special things going on, and there's a lot of special people, and I'm just honored to be a part of it." When you hear the word "culture," this defines it. Culture is part winning and part creating an environment where everyone enjoys coming to work. Most importantly, culture is how you treat people. In Washington, it's not a buzzword anymore. It's real. As for Tress Way, he deserved the hero's welcome he received.

Commanders re-sign P Tress Way

Tress Way's long run as the punter in Washington is set to continue. JP Finlay of NBC Washington reports that Way has agreed to a new deal with the Commanders. The 2025 season will be Way's 12th with the franchise. Way punted 50 times during the 2024 regular season, which was his lowest figure since punting 49 times during a 16-game 2016 season. He did not punt at all in two games and then added a third in the team's playoff win over the Buccaneers. Way had a net average of 42.9 yards when he was called upon to kick and he also completed a 23-yard pass during the team's NFC Championship Game loss to the Eagles.

NFC championship: Commanders surprise Eagles with fake punt, match NFL record with fourth 4th down conversion

With Sunday's NFC championship game threatening to get out of hand, the Washington Commanders decided to gamble. It paid off. The Philadelphia Eagles scored touchdowns on each of their opening drives to take an early 14-3 lead. Then Washington's third drive stalled, and the Commanders sent out their punt unit on fourth-and-6 at their own 31. But Tress Way did not punt. Instead, the Washington punter lofted a perfect pass down the middle to tight end Ben Sinnott, who ran through the secondary uncovered and corralled the ball near midfield for a 23-yard gain and a first down. FAKED IT📺 #WASvsPHI FOX — Washington Commanders (@Commanders) January 26, 2025 The conversion kept alive a drive that ended with a field goal to cut Philadelphia's lead to 14-6 early in the second quarter. Instead of giving the ball back to Philadelphia down 11 points, Washington cut its deficit to one possession. The conversion continued an aggressive trend for the Commanders, who went for and converted two fourth downs on their opening drive that also ended with a field goal. They kept it up in the second half and converted on fourth down for a fourth time, which matched an NFL record. The Commanders are now just the fourth team in NFL history to convert four times on fourth down in a playoff game. The Buffalo Bills last pulled that feat off in an overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022. While the Eagles flew ahead to a commanding lead on Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field, the Commanders didn't change their stripes with a trip to the Super Bowl on the the line. They got this far by playing aggressive and trusting their players to make plays, and Sunday wasn't about to be any different.

WATCH: Commanders punter Tress Way converts on a fake punt

The Washington Commanders had a disastrous start against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC championship game. The Commanders had an 18-play drive, converted on two fourth downs, but had to settle for a Zane Gonzalez field goal. The Eagles responded quickly as star running back Saquon Barkley took the first play from scrimmage 60 yards to the house to take a 7-3 lead. On Washington's next possession, wide receiver Dyami Brown fumbled as he fought for extra yardage, and Barkley capped off the drive with another touchdown run. The Commanders followed that with a three-and-out, and suddenly, things appeared bleak. Enter punter Tress Way. Way shocked everyone with a fake punt, throwing a pass downfield to rookie tight end Ben Sinnott for 23 yards and a first down. Check it out. The Commanders would end the drive with another Gonzalez field goal to trim Philly's lead to 14-6.
