The Telegraph: Why Chelsea could miss out on crucial signing to rival club
Chelsea are prioritising other targets, leaving Liverpool with a clear run at Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi according to reports. The Blues were rocked by the news Levi Colwill will miss the majority of the season with an ACL injury picked up in training on Monday. Colwill has undergone successful surgery and will now begin his rehabilitation process, but it leaves Chelsea with a major decision to make. Liverpool set to have clear run at Marc Guehi Enzo Maresca started Trevoh Chalobah and Josh Acheampong in Friday night's win against Bayer Leverkusen at Stamford Bridge. The big question now is whether Chelsea make do with they've got or enter the market for a new centre back before the window closes. Guehi is into the final 12 months of his Crystal Palace contract. (Photo by) Maresca stated after the Leverkusen win he wanted a new centre back, and he was spotted in conversation with Chelsea's sporting directors after making those comments. An obvious solution would be Guehi, who Chelsea tried to sign in January before opting to recall Trevoh Chalobah. Chelsea were linked with Guehi earlier this summer, and he's a product of the club's academy, whilst he's also into the final 12 months of his contract. However, The Telegraph have reported the Blues are concentrating on other targets despite the injury to Colwill, leaving Liverpool with a clear run at the England international. Renato Veiga still expected to leave There had been talk over whether it would be possible to reintegrate Renato Veiga into the squad to provide cover for Colwill. Chelsea haven't given up on Morgan Rogers Chelsea reportedly want as many as eight or nine attacking options in their squad to rotate between next season as they prepare for their return to the Champions League. The Blues have been linked with a number of names such as Mohammed Kudus, who's now joined Tottenham, and Hugo Ekitike, who's thought to be closing in on a move to Liverpool. (Photo by) Chelsea have also been linked with Xavi Simons, but one of their main targets is Villa star Rogers, although a deal could be difficult to pull off. Rogers is reportedly Chelsea's dream transfer target, and it's thought Villa are looking for around £80m for the England international. It's unclear if Chelsea will make a serious approach at this point, but TBR Football have reported the Blues haven't given up on signing the 22-year-old. The report adds Chelsea are looking to include players, which could prove key in getting Villa to agree to a deal. TBR add Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile could be offered, whilst Villa are said to be interested in Nicolas Jackson. Chelsea could turn to Xavi Simons If a move for Rogers isn't possible then Chelsea could turn their attention to RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Xavi Simons.
