Musicians from around the world celebrate Ukraine with free concert

(WIVT/WBGH) – A local musician interested in sharing the beauty of the Ukrainian culture is hosting a free concert on Sunday. Ü Lee is presenting Celebrate Ukraine with Music by Ukrainians at Saint John's Memorial Center. The concert features singers, violinists, a flutist, and pianists from all over the world. Lee is from Taiwan and moved to the United States to pursue music, previously serving as a resident artist for the Tri-Cities Opera. Although she is not Ukrainian, she loves to learn about new cultures, languages, and lifestyles. Lee says it's important to show love and support to people of all cultures. 'For this concert, some of us are Ukrainian. So, for the Ukrainians, they understand what the pieces mean and everything. And for us that are not Ukrainians, we just want to show that we love to learn, we love to appreciate, and this is the way we do it,' said Lee. The concert will begin at 3 p.m. on Sunday. In addition to the music, there will be art on display as well as refreshments. The event is free and open to the public however, donations are welcome. TCO's annual Opera and Beer event returning this week

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A fan favorite event that celebrates an unlikely pairing is returning this week. Tri-Cities Opera is once again hosting Opera and Beer. This year's event will be held at Factory by Beer Tree in Johnson City. Guests will be able to enjoy dinner and craft beer as they hear from high-class talent. Musical selections are from popular operas and musicals. There will be drinking songs as well. General Director John Rozzoni says the event is perfect for people who are opera-curious because it strips away the formalities of the art, making it less intimidating. 'At TCO, we believe that opera is for everyone. I think a lot of people who are not as familiar with the art form, the entertainment form, think of a certain thing that's hundreds of years old, in a foreign language, big, extravagant. And yes, that's part of what opera is, but opera is also very much a living and breathing art form,' said Rozzoni. Rozzoni says the show is immersive, meaning performers will be drinking and cheers-ing along with the audience. Opera and Beer will take place on Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6. Tickets are $30 and include one free drink coupon. Business of the Week: Tri-Cities Opera

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Tri-Cities Opera is the Greater Binghamton Chamber Business of the Week. TCO is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. It was founded by Carmen Savoca and Peyton Hibbit and has been a training ground for up and coming opera singers for decades. It stages several major productions each season including yesterday's performance of Rigoletto at the Forum. TCO has a large facility on Clinton Street in Binghamton where it rehearses and puts on some of its productions. The building also houses a large costume shop, set shop and storage for roughly 20 sets that it rents out to other companies across the country. Marketing Director Cate Berger says Tri-Cities Opera is committed to both honoring the classics as well as exploring the new. 'Yes, this is a wonderful, historic art form. But we are telling stories. Some of them are classic and some of them are new. It's more likely than not there will be some interest and so you should come and experience it with us,' Berger said. The TCO season still has 2 events left. On Saturday May 10th at 3 p.m. at the Opera Center, it will present the Pocket Opera Project. And then Opera and Beer May 20th and 22nd at Factory by Beer Tree Brew. More information at Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. And so, I think that makes it really appealing for audiences to come and see a story, told in musical form. With amazing orchestra. And it really is something that people can identify with because the characters are human. I mean, they really can identify with what we're going through with our relationships on the stage and how this would play out,' LeFebvre said. The show is performed in Italian with English subtitles. Sunday's show is a matinee, beginning at 3 p.m. and there is an intermission.
