Trick Williams just won the TNA world title at NXT Battleground
Who would have ever thought a day would come that a show promoted by WWE would be headlined not just by a current TNA World Champion but that the match itself would be for said TNA world championship? That came to be at tonight's (Sun., May 25, 2025) Battleground premium live event at the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida, when the face of TNA, Joe Hendry, put his title on the line against one of the top stars in all of NXT, Trick Williams. It was a Joe Hendry match, so they worked the gimmick to death: Advertisement But we also got Trick having fun with Booker T's old gimmick: Late in the match, Williams brought the TNA world title into the ring, though he didn't intentionally use it as a weapon himself, thanks to the referee, so he didn't get disqualified. However, it did end up on the mat and he dropped Hendry right on top of it. The ref didn't DQ him for that either, and a follow up Trick Shot was enough to earn the three count. Trick Williams captures TNA World Championship at NXT Battleground in history-making moment
Trick Williams made history on Sunday night at NXT Battleground when he defeated Joe Hendry for the TNA World Championship in the final match of the premium live event. Williams took aim at Hendry in recent weeks as the latter superstar had been riding high. Hendry won the TNA World Championship against Nic Nemeth at TNA Genesis. He has appeared on WWE television since then as he entered the Royal Rumble this past February and stepped up to the plate to take on Randy Orton at WrestleMania 41. However, Williams became Hendry's primary opponent when the Scotsman called him out late last month. He even interfered in Williams' attempt to become the No. 1 contender battle royal for the NXT Championship. It allowed the Battleground match to be made official. Williams and Hendry fought valiantly. As the match wore on, Williams tried to use the TNA belt to clock Hendry. The referee took it away from him before he could use it. Hendry rolled him up before he could use it but only got a two-count. Hendry went for the Standing Ovation before Williams raked his eyes. Williams hit a flapjack on Hendry, who fell face-first onto the title, which laid on the canvas. Williams hit a Trick Shot on Hendry and pinned him for the win. Williams became the first active WWE-connected superstar to hold the TNA World Championship – a significant moment in the two companies' recent partnership. Hendry was the only champion who failed to defend their title on the card. Sol Ruca defeated Kelani Jordan to retain the Women's North American Championship. Stephanie Vaquer topped Jordynne Grace to keep the NXT Women's Championship. Oba Femi defended the NXT Championship against Myles Borne. It is unclear what the future will hold for Williams, but it should give him a huge boost of momentum for the next few weeks. WWE fans witnessed history and the end to a 23-year championship legacy over the weekend. Last night, for the first time ever, a TNA Wrestling championship was defended on WWE television – and viewers tuning into NXT Battleground were stunned after a major twist. History was made in the main event as Trick Williams stole the win from TNA Wrestling World Champion Joe Hendry, meaning for the first time in its 23-year history, TNA's top title is now held by a WWE contracted superstar. Although the TNA Title itself has only been active since 2007, the company used the TNA World Heavyweight Championship for its first five years. It's a massive step in the partnership between WWE and TNA, and fans couldn't believe what they were seeing as Sunday's show went off air. 'A WWE superstar is TNA world champion.. Fans have had a hint of what's to come, with TNA Wrestling star Mike Santana revealed earlier in the show that he would be waiting to challenge whoever walked out as champion. The result is also interesting when it comes to the future of Hendry himself, who has caught fire with WWE fans this year, including a shock WrestleMania match with Randy Orton last month.
