Behind-the-Scenes Video Revealing How SUPERMAN's Most Criticized Flight Shot Was Filmed — GeekTyrant
James Gunn has cleared the air on one of Superman 's most talked-about moments, revealing exactly how the controversial barrel-roll flying shot was pulled off. In a new behind-the-scenes video shared on Instagram, Gunn shows David Corenswet strapped into a practical rig on a soundstage at Trilith Studios. The actor is being physically spun by a crew member to simulate the dynamic mid-air roll, while massive LED screens project a snowy mountain backdrop filmed on location in Svalbard, Norway. 'On the stage at Trilith shooting the barrel roll through the mountains. All the plates were shot previously in Svalbard. 7.26.24,' Gunn wrote in the caption. The footage confirms a mix of old-school practical work and cutting-edge digital environments, shutting down earlier theories that the shot was entirely CG. This moment became a flashpoint back when it debuted in a Superman TV spot earlier this year. Some fans criticized the sequence for looking 'off,' even claiming Corenswet's face had been digitally replaced. Gunn addressed those claims head-on months ago, writing, 'There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People's faces can look different when you put a wide-angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real, as is David.' Now, the new video offers proof. What looked like pure CGI to many was actually Corenswet on a practical rig with real-world elements integrated into the shot. Gunn's reveal highlights the creative process behind bringing Superman's flight to life in a way that feels tangible. It's a fascinating look at how the film blends practical effects with advanced tech, staying true to the cinematic ambition Gunn promised from the start.

After filming at a metro Atlanta film studio for nearly a year, 'Superman' is about to hit the big screen. The Man of Steel is back to fighting crime, and this time he did it about 30 miles outside of Atlanta. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] 'We've done a lot of big films, a lot of the Marvel movies, like 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Endgame.' We recently finished Mr. Coppola, Francis Coppola's 'Megalopolis,' and, of course, 'Superman,'" CEO Frank Patterson said. Patterson said he's proud to be part of the latest rendition of the iconic superhero. 'It's incredible. So you're talking about one of the greatest storytellers of our time, [director] James Gunn, making a movie about one of the biggest mythical characters in our culture,' he described. 'So we, needless to say, we were very excited about supporting it, and it was a heavy lift, as you might imagine.' But if you're hoping to see anything that looks familiar, Patterson you'll see much more of Superman's home, the fictional Metropolis, than Atlanta. Marvel moves production out of US even as Trump puts 100 per cent tariff on overseas films
Marvel Entertainment's release of Thunderbolts* in cinemas at the weekend will mark the end of an era for the US state of Georgia. Advertisement Thanks to the state's tax credit system and new stages at Trilith Studios in Fayetteville, 13 big-budget Marvel movies have been filmed in Georgia over the past decade, including multiple Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, Spider-Man, Black Panther and Captain America films. Collectively, Marvel has spent more than US$3 billion in the state, and the films collectively generated more than US$12 billion in worldwide revenue in cinemas alone. But after Thunderbolts* , which many critics are saying is the best Marvel film in years, the production company has no films slated to be filmed in Georgia. Marvel has chosen instead to primarily shoot its Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies in London for now. That includes not just the coming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, set to be released in July but the next Spider-Man film and two more Avengers movies. Advertisement
