EAM Jaishankar leads Op Sindoor debate in Rajya Sabha

Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha deputy leader Sagarika Ghose said on Wednesday, that the party will raise the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise going on in Bihar strongly in the House. "Opposition parties have participated honestly in the debate on Pahalgam attack. The most important issue today is SIR. We have been giving notices continuously, but it is not being accepted," Ghose told PTI. "We have seen lakhs of voters have been removed from the voters' list in Bihar. We want a discussion on this. Is citizens' right to vote being snatched? Is the BJP using the EC to push its own agenda?" she asked.

Defamation case: Delhi HC takes exception to TMC MP Saket Gokhale's affidavit

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday took exception to the contents of an affidavit filed by Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale in the appeal filed against a judgment passed in July last year, which had ordered him to pay Rs 50 lakh damages to former diplomat Lakshmi Puri and to publish an apology in a newspaper and on his social media platform X for making "wrong and unverified allegations". A Division Bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Renu Bhatnagar orally remarked that the contents of Gokhale's affidavit tendering an apology were not acceptable after his counsel highlighted the fact that the document was lying in defect with the registry. Observing that the language used could not be accepted, the Justice Chawla-led Bench directed Gokhale to withdraw his affidavit in the present form and file it afresh. It clarified that the Delhi High Court will take up his appeal for hearing only once the defective affidavit is withdrawn and a fresh affidavit is filed with the registry. The matter is likely to be heard next on July 24. During the course of the hearing, senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing on Puri's behalf, referred to earlier coercive orders of the court, which had asked the TMC leader that why he should not be sent to civil prison over non-compliance and ordered attachment of the salary, which he draws as a Member of Parliament until the sum of Rs 50 lakh was deposited. Last month, Gokhale tendered an apology and in a post on X, wrote, "I unconditionally apologise for having put out a series of tweets against Amb. Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri on 13th and 23rd June 2021, which tweets contained wrong and unverified allegations in relation to the purchase of property by Amb. Puri abroad, which I sincerely regret.' The defamation suit was filed following Gokhale's successive X posts accusing Lakshmi Puri, wife of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, of purchasing property in Switzerland disproportionate to her income. He also named Hardeep Puri in the tweets. The Delhi High Court had held that the plaintiff suffered irreparable harm on account of Gokhale's defamatory statements. It said: "The defendant (Gokhale) is restrained from publishing further defamatory content against the plaintiff. Damages to the tune of Rs 50,00,000 are awarded to the plaintiff for the harm caused to her reputation."

West Bengal Chief Secretary seeks Odisha counterpart's help to stop harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers

West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant has written to his Odisha counterpart, Manoj Ahuja, seeking 'immediate intervention with utmost sensitivity' to stop the alleged harassment and arbitrary detention of Bengali-speaking migrant workers in various parts of Odisha. The letter, dated July 3, termed such treatment 'unacceptable' and sought verification of the Indian citizenship of these workers, who have 'long contributed to Odisha's economy as daily wage workers, rickshaw pullers, domestic help, and long-term settlers'. It also emphasised the need to protect their dignity and prevent any human rights violations in the region. Mr. Pant said despite multiple attempts at providing verified data from the West Bengal government for its people, there has been no concrete action in Odisha to stop such instances of harassment and offer relief to the migrant workers. 'We are receiving disturbing reports of such individuals being detained without due legal process in regions around Paradip and across coastal districts such as Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Malkangiri, Balasore, and Cuttack. Despite producing valid identity documents, including Aadhaar cards, ration cards, voter IDs, electricity bills, and PDS documents, the claims of these individuals are being dismissed,' the letter stated. 'Take humanitarian view' The Bengal Chief Secretary appealed to his Odisha counterpart to 'take a humanitarian view of the matter and ensure that these individuals, who are Indian citizens, are not subjected to arbitrary detention or harassment based on linguistic or regional identity'. Mr. Pant added that the West Bengal government is ready to provide any additional data and verification required to ensure that they remain safe. Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam also spoke out against the alleged harassment, stating that even after providing all required documents, including Aadhaar cards and electoral lists, the Odisha government was not satisfied. 'Odisha has no further demands, but still their police are refusing to release these poor migrant workers in many cases. They are detained illegally beyond 24 hours without being produced before the court,' Mr. Islam said in a social media post. He urged the Odisha government to 'not ignite the politics of hatred and let the migrants live in peace and with dignity'. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has on multiple occasions in the last few months alleged that people hailing from the State who speak in Bengali are being branded as 'Bangladeshis' in some BJP-ruled States. 'Is it a crime to speak in Bengali? Even Indians who have valid documents but are found speaking in Bengali are being branded as Bangladeshis and detained,' she said.

West Bengal alleges Odisha has detained nearly 100 of its migrants claiming they are Bangladeshis

The West Bengal government has alleged that nearly 100 migrant workers from the state have been detained in Odisha and 'sent to detention centres' on suspicion of being Bangladeshis, The Indian Express reported on Monday. In May, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Odisha government launched a statewide operation to identify and deport undocumented Bangladeshi migrants living in the state. Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP and chairman of West Bengal's Migrant Welfare Board Samirul Islam has said that 'top administrative officials and police officers…have reached out to their counterparts in Odisha' regarding the alleged illegal detentions, the newspaper reported. 'But they are not releasing the poor migrant workers,' Islam was quoted as saying on Monday. 'What has happened is unconstitutional'. He added: 'They are Indian citizens and residents of Bengal. They have gone to Odisha for work. But they have been detained and labelled Bangaldeshis. They have been sent to the detention centre. We will bring them home'. The Rajya Sabha MP claimed that this trend is happening in 'state after state under BJP rule'. However, an unidentified Odisha government official told The Indian Express that 'no one is being detained at any police station'. The government is conducting verifications as part of a nationwide exercise in view of the recent developments in the neighbourhood, the official added. 'We are just verifying their identities and are also in touch with West Bengal government,' the newspaper quoted the official as saying. The development comes nearly two weeks after four men from West Bengal, who had been picked up by the Maharashtra Police and 'pushed' into Bangladesh, were brought back on June 15. The Murshidabad Police in West Bengal had presented proof of them being Indian citizens. Over the past month, Indian authorities have been pursuing a policy to push individuals claimed to be undocumented migrants into Bangladesh. India has pushed back more than 2,000 persons into Bangladesh since the country launched ' Operation Sindoor ', a military operation against terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The legality of the 'push back' policy has been debated in India and internationally. Experts have told Scroll that the policy violated India's obligations under international law and customary international law.
