Local concert canceled after musician denied entry into US
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The Mahoning Valley has lost a summer concert because a musician was denied entry into the United States.
The Trio Mente was going to be featured in the Brunch & Bohemia concert at the Youngstown Country Club on July 20, but Czech clarinetist Jaroslav Skuta was detained at the Detroit Airport.
Skuta was put through hours of interrogation and then deported to Prague. The group has canceled its U.S. summer tour.
'To have this opportunity to be taken away from us, obviously, is disappointing. We also need to think all the time, each of us as individuals, how welcoming are we to others outside our community, because that's how people end up relocating here, starting a business here, raising a family here,' said Aundrea Cika Heschmeyer, vice president of Simply Slavic in Youngstown.
Skuta attended Kent State as a graduate student. He hopes there will be another opportunity to return in the future.
