'Munson Fest' will benefit Semisonic/New Standards musician's recovery from stroke

John Munson — a Minnesota musician who has played in groups like Semisonic, Trip Shakespeare, The Twilight Hours, and The New Standards — suffered a stroke in late February. Since then, friends and fans have rallied together, raising more than $135,000 to support his recovery and medical expenses. Now, a benefit concert, dubbed Munson Fest, has been launched to continue that support. The one-night fest will take place at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul on May 1. The concert features friends and collaborators like Chan Poling and Steve Roehm of The New Standards, Aby Wolf (Champagne Confetti), Matt Wilson and His Orchestra, The Dust of Suns, Dlyan Hicks, and more acts that will be announced in the lead-up to the show. Tickets are on sale now — though, seating is already looking pretty limited — with prices starting at $35.

Semisonic's John Munson recovering from a stroke

John Munson, a member of the Minneapolis-based rock band Semisonic, is recovering from a stroke he suffered in late February, and a fundraiser has since been launched to help with medical costs. A GoFundMe states Munson suffered a stroke on Feb. 23. Thebassist, keyboardist, and guitarist previously suffered a stroke in November 2020. "Although his prognosis is positive, he will be in acute rehabilitation for a length undetermined," Victoria Norvell Levy wrote in the GoFundMe post. "This puts a huge strain on a family, especially self employed artists." As of Tuesday morning, the fundraiser has raised nearly $90,000 of its $100,000 goal. "We have benefited over the years listening to John, maybe we can return the love," the GoFundMe states. The Minneapolis band — consisting of Dan Wilson, Munson and Jacob Slichter — evolved from Wilson's and Munson's band Trip Shakespeare. During their rise in the late 1990s and 2000s, Semisonic produced Billboard Top 100 hits such as "Closing Time," "Singing in My Sleep," "Secret Smile," and "Chemistry." Although Semisonic never announced a break-up, they went their separate ways after touring for around 10 years. In 2005, Munson former The New Standards along with fellow Twin Cities musicians Chan Poling (The Suburbs) and Steve Roehm (Billy Goat), releasing four albums between 2005-15. Munson and Semisonic then picked up where they left off in 2017, releasing new music and going back on tour, with their most recent album released in 2023. The band is slated to perform at the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival this year in July at Harriet Island in St. Paul.
