Detroit Tigers call up Jahmai Jones; Andy Ibáñez optioned to Triple-A Toledo

The Detroit Tigers have added a new player to their active roster. The Tigers called up Jahmai Jones, a 27-year-old outfielder, from Triple-A Toledo, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation who were granted anonymity because the roster moves are not official. The Tigers optioned infielder Andy Ibáñez to the Mud Hens, following his continued struggles against left-handed pitchers. Advertisement Since July 21, 2024, Ibáñez is hitting .200 with a .578 OPS against left-handed pitchers across 136 plate appearances. He has hit just two home runs off lefties — and three total — during the 319-day stretch. MORE ABOUT THIS: Andy Ibáñez struggling vs lefties. That's a big problem for Tigers Detroit Tigers infielder Jahmai Jones walks out of the batting cage after practice during spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland, Fla. on Friday, Feb. 21, 2025. Both Jones and Ibáñez are right-handed hitters with track records of success against left-handed pitchers, so Jones is expected to step into the Ibáñez platoon role — only as an outfielder instead of an infielder. The Tigers need to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Jones, which could result in outfielder Akil Baddoo, currently in Toledo, being designated for assignment. Advertisement In 2025, Jones is hitting .276 with six home runs, 24 walks and 46 strikeouts across 52 games for Triple-A Toledo, posting an .875 OPS. He has made 18 starts in left field, 15 starts in right field and seven starts in center field. Jones has MLB service time in parts of four seasons, hitting .198 with a .535 OPS in 69 games. He has played for the Los Angeles Angels (three games in 2020), Baltimore Orioles (26 games in 2021), Milwaukee Brewers (seven games in 2203) and New York Yankees (33 games in 2024). He had a .238 batting average with the Yankees last season. This story will be updated. Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold. Injured Alex Cobb throws live batting practice; Detroit Tigers activate John Brebbia

The Detroit Tigers practically pulled right-hander Alex Cobb out of retirement by signing him to a one-year, $15 million contract in the offseason, but he still hasn't pitched in a game. He has been injured since early February. Advertisement Cobb took a "step forward" in his recovery from a right hip injury, according to manager A.J. Hinch, when he completed a live batting practice session May 9 at Comerica Park. The 37-year-old threw nearly 30 pitches, with Hinch, president of baseball operations Scott Harris and general manager Jeff Greenberg watching intently from behind home plate. "His stuff has been really, really good," Hinch said after Cobb's session. "He's still working through his recovery to get back, so we just need him to take small steps forward so that we can make an assessment on what's next for him. It was a very productive day." JEFF SEIDEL: I didn't expect to cover Tigers this long in 2025. But I'm sure glad I did Detroit Tigers pitcher Alex Cobb poses for a photo during picture day of spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland, Fla. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025. In the session, Cobb simulated two innings, but in the first inning, he didn't look comfortable while getting off the mound and running to cover first base on a ground ball. Advertisement The good news: Cobb returned to the mound for the second inning. He faced outfielder Matt Vierling and third baseman Jace Jung in live batting practice, with Vierling rehabbing from a right shoulder strain that's sidelined him since late February. Vierling, though, is further ahead than Cobb in his rehab program, already having completed three games on a rehab assignment in Triple-A Toledo. He is hitting .286 (2-for-7) with one home run, four walks and three strikeouts in 11 plate appearances. Celebrate 125 epic seasons with the Tigers! But Vierling still hasn't played the outfield. After Cobb's session, Vierling threw for coaches and trainers in the outfield. He will continue his rehab assignment May 10 with the Mud Hens, possibly in the outfield. The 34-year-old has been sidelined since April 19 with a right triceps strain, missing 20 days. Before the injury, Brebbia allowed one run on three hits and five walks with nine strikeouts across nine innings in eight relief appearances. He walked two batters apiece in his final two outings. Brebbia completed two games on rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo. Advertisement BÁEZ'S SECRET? Here's how Javy is on pace for best season since 2019 To create room on the roster, the Tigers optioned outfielder Brewer Hicklen, who recorded the first hit of his MLB career May 8 against the Colorado Rockies. Hicklen spent just one day on the team. What A.J. Hinch says Entering May 9, the Tigers are tied with the Los Angles Dodgers for MLB's best record, at 25-13. The Tigers also lead all teams with a plus-83 run differential. Here's what Hinch said about those facts: "In perspective, it's great for where we're at right now, and I'm very proud of how we're playing. It's just that our challenge is not about best record or not best record, or leading this or leading that. Two things can happen at the same time — I can be very proud of how we've gotten here and what we've done, but also uber-focused on our next series. I've preached that to you guys. I've preached that to our players. I preach it all the time because that's who I am and how I operate. I'm really happy with our guys and what we're putting into the preparation to get the results that we're getting. But it's not a daily check for me. It's part of a long season of the grind. The only way I know how to prepare is to get our guys focused. When you're getting those answers from them, it's my fault. All they're going to talk about is the next series because that's all they hear from me, but I'm very proud of our players and our organization, and the various people who are here, but also a bunch of guys who have popped up for a day or two or filled in when needed." Tigers RHP Jason Foley has season-ending surgery after leading team, ranking 5th in AL with 28 saves

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Tigers right-hander Jason Foley, who had a team-high 28 saves last season, has had season-ending shoulder surgery. 'He's going to want to forget 2025 because he very much was going to be a part of this season,' manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday. 'I love him as a competitor and know he will attack this rehab.' The 29-year-old Foley was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after spring training, a season after trailing just four AL pitchers in saves. Foley went on the injured list last month a right shoulder strain. He was 3-6 with a 3.15 ERA in 69 appearances last year, tying Will Vest for the team lead, and had at least 20 more saves than any other Tiger. In three-plus seasons, he is 7-9 with a 3.16 ERA in 210 games. ___ AP MLB:

Detroit Tigers option last year's closer Jason Foley to Triple-A Toledo before Opening Day

The Detroit Tigers on Wednesday optioned right-handed reliever Jason Foley to Triple-A Toledo. He will not make the 2025 Opening Day roster. Foley, who is under contract for $3.15 million, worked as the Tigers' closer for most of the 2024 season. Foley, 29, posted a 3.15 ERA with 20 walks and 46 strikeouts across 60 innings in 69 relief appearances in 2024. Detroit Tigers slash 8 players in 4th round of spring training cuts, including .417 hitter

The number of occupied lockers in the Detroit Tigers' clubhouse at the TigerTown complex continues to shrink with 12 days until Opening Day. The Tigers cut eight players before Saturday's game, reassigning all of them to minor league camp: right-handers Jordan Balazovic and Brendan White, left-handers Dietrich Enns and Matt Gage, infielder Andrew Navigato, outfielders Akil Baddoo and Bligh Madris and catcher Brian Serven. It was the fourth round of roster cuts in spring training. The Tigers need to cut 13 more players before Opening Day on March 27 at the Los Angeles Dodgers. There are 39 players in MLB spring training, not including the three players on the 60-day injured list. Of those 39 players, three are non-roster invitees: left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin, catcher Tomás Nido and rising infielder/outfielder Jahmai Jones, though Nido will start the season in Triple-A Toledo. INJURY UPDATE: Parker Meadows fallout: Tigers have lots of CF options, including some surprises None of the roster cuts were surprising, but Navigato had the best spring training among the position players eliminated from Opening Day roster considerations. Navigato, a 26-year-old right-handed hitter who awaits his MLB debut, hit .417 (10-for-24) with one home run, three walks and four strikeouts in 16 games this spring, posting a 1.148 OPS. He played 30 innings in left field, 21 innings at second base, six innings at third base and four innings at shortstop. Although Navigato is a below-average defender, he has impressed the Tigers on offense. He isn't on the 40-man roster, but if the Tigers need a right-handed hitting utility player, he could find his way to the MLB level in 2025. For now, Navigato is slated to join Triple-A Toledo. In 2024, Navigato hit .271 with 21 home runs, 55 walks and 126 strikeouts across 128 games for the Mud Hens, spending most of his time at shortstop. [ MUST LISTEN: Make "Days of Roar" your go-to Detroit Tigers podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify) ] The other notable roster cut is Baddoo, who has been sidelined since the beginning of spring training with a hand injury that required surgery to repair a broken bone. The 26-year-old has already made significant progress in his rehabilitation program, including playing catch and completing defensive drills. The next step for Baddoo is beginning a hitting progression in the coming days. JEFF SEIDEL: This Tigers infield prospect represents everything great about sports Before spring training, Baddoo wasn't in contention for an Opening Day roster spot, especially since he's no longer on the 40-man roster anymore. However, the injuries to outfielders Parker Meadows and Matt Vierling would've created an opportunity for him. Instead, Baddoo remains on track to miss the start of the 2025 season. When healthy, he is expected to report to Triple-A Toledo. Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold.
