Expired temp tags about to be a thing of the past in Missouri
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri drivers will see a multitude of changes within the next two years, including the discontinuance of temporary tags. This comes after the passage of Senate Bill 28, which will take effect on Aug. 28, but the change in paying vehicle sales tax will be implemented once the second phase of the Department of Revenue's new FUSION (Fifty Unique Systems In One Nexus) system is operational. Parkville man charged in connection with 2-month-old son's death Once the system is in place, vehicle buyers in Missouri will be required to pay sales tax at the point of the sale when they purchase through a dealership. If the car is purchased privately, buyers will continue to take their bill of sale to any Missouri license office to pay sales tax. Once the purchase is complete in both scenarios, buyers will get a paper copy of their new license plate and a permanent metal plate with the same number configuration will be mailed to the buyer. Buyers will no longer receiver have the option of getting a temporary tag. 'This change to the way we collect sales tax will eliminate temporary license tags which rob the state of millions of dollars each year because of drivers who never pay their sales tax,' said Missouri Director of Revenue Trish Vincent. 'Though the law goes into effect on August 28, the sales tax changes cannot take effect until our new FUSION system is up and running.' The purpose of FUSION is to combine older mainframe systems and software applications that can no longer communicate with each other into one core system that will significantly increase speed and efficiency in performing motor vehicle and driver licensing functions. Retired Olathe police detective killed in weekend motorcycle crash The first phase was focused on driver licensing and implemented on Nov. 12, 2024. Until FUSION is fully operational, the current sales tax collection process will remain in effect for both dealerships and private vehicle purchases. 'This new law affects both the seller and the buyer,' Vincent said. 'We are going to work with dealers to get everyone trained on the new system and prepared to collect sales tax. Buyers will need to be ready to pay the full sales tax amount at the time of purchase.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Department of Revenue speaks on Missouri temp tag issues
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The State of Missouri is fed up with abuse of temporary car license tags. Lawmakers have approved a new system designed to crack down on abuse. The state's director of revenue wants to get out of the temp tag business entirely. Missouri making changes to temporary tag, vehicle registrations next month Many Missouri drivers aren't renewing their car tags when they expire, including a large number of those using temporary paper tags. That leaves the Missouri Department of Revenue with millions of dollars that go uncollected. 'Temp tags should only be good for 30 days,' said Trish Vincent, who directs the State Department of Revenue. Vincent knows many drivers are keeping their temp tags for much longer. In recent months, FOX4 spotted drivers with temp tags expired by more than a year. Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has approved a Senate bill, allowing DMVs to issue a 30-day license tag only for trade-in cars still under a loan. New technology the state plans to introduce will require drivers to pay their sales tax at the dealership before they're given a temp tag. Graham Hoffman memorial ride raises $65,000 for scholarship fund 'We are hopefully going to get out of the temp tag business in late 26 or early 27. Taxes will be paid on time, so that helps build roads out there in the state of Missouri,' Vincent said on Wednesday. Also, under the new system, car dealers will be permitted to issue temporary tags that expire after 60 days only under special circumstances. Law enforcement is doing the best it can to enforce these laws, according to Vincent, who adds that in the near future, Missouri license plates will go from using six digits to seven, meaning if a temp tag is seen with only six, patrol officers will know it's no good anymore. REAL ID mandate now in effect across the nation
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The deadline for state-issued REAL IDs has arrived, with people across the country now required to get one in order to board flights or enter federal facilities. Despite the efforts to inform the public, according to the Missouri Director of Revenue, Trish Vincent, only 46 percent of Missouri license holders are in compliance with REAL ID. Ren Lubbering, Communications Coordinator for the Springfield-Branson National Airport, says most people will be able to fly tomorrow, regardless of whether their ID has been updated. 'A little over 70% of passengers here in Springfield in our airport already do have their REAL ID' says Lubbering, 'And so, we are expecting potentially some passengers to not be aware tomorrow that they're ID is not REAL ID compliant, but there is a process to help them get on a plane.' Tariffs impacting local flower shops ahead of Mother's Day Lubbering adds that those without a REAL ID should expect longer screenings at the airport. 'They may be subjected to additional screening and security measures at the gate. So, what that looks like is that they may have additional screening through the security checkpoint, and they may have to undergo additional security protocols, but they will still be able to fly.' TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling within the United States. Passengers traveling after this deadline should either travel with a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative form of ID, including: State-issued Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) or Enhanced ID (EID) US passport Permanent resident card Border crossing card Information on how to get your REAL ID can be found here.
