This Morning fans fume 'this is why kids commit crimes!' at parenting expert's VERY controversial advice - but who's in the wrong?

This Morning fans fumed 'this is why kids commit crimes!' as a parenting expert shared some very controversial advice. Yesterday's episode of the ITV chat show saw presenters Ben Shephard, 50, and Cat Deeley, 48, sit down to discuss parenting approaches as part of the This Morning's View segment. One panellist, TV presenter Trisha Goddard, 67, addressed recent controversial comments made by BBC newsreader turned child therapist Kate Silverton, 54. Kate told the award-winning Netmums parenting podcast earlier this week: 'It's just a fallacy to call children naughty. 'They're not making conscious choices for the majority of the time. They are driven by a very, very immature brain and a nervous system that very often is being triggered.' She added labelling children as 'naughty' wrongly makes them believe that defines them and can therefore be psychologically damaging to them. When Ben and Cat asked for Trisha's reaction to the comments on This Morning yesterday, she backed Kate up. Trisha explained: 'I always believe in labelling the behaviour and not the person. 'Naughty is probably the light end but if you keep telling a child they're stupid or they don't know what they're doing or, "Gosh, you're always clumsy", it absolutely does sit in their head and set a trend. 'If you talk about the behaviour rather than labelling the child, it's a much better way to go.' She further explained the distinction by saying, for example, it is more constructive to tell a child, 'That was a stupid thing to do', rather than, 'You are stupid'. Kate advocates for this approach to the extent she published a book in 2021 called There's No Such Thing As Naughty. The parenting guide for those with children under five offers techniques to manage everyday challenges and forge a strong bond with them from the start. 'At the heart of the book is a simple and revelatory way to understand how your child's brain develops and how it influences their behaviour', the synopsis reads. It claims to offer 'a new understanding that for under-fives, there can be no such thing as "naughty"'. But many viewers, hearing Kate's comments repeated on This Morning yesterday, felt this parenting approach was too soft, taking to X to express their disapproval. One wrote, The Mirror reports: 'If you don't tell a child off then they will think that their behaviour is acceptable.' Another went even further: '"Stop calling kids naughty". This is why kids carry knives and commit crimes we see today. Soft parenting. 'The kids parenting the parents because the parents start to become scared of their own kids because they aren't dealt with correctly!' Someone else asked: 'What would Trisha say about the actions of the killers of Bhim Kholi?' They were referring to the 80-year-old man who was killed after being racially abused and attacked while walking his dog in a park near his Leicestershire home in September last year. Earlier this month, a 15-year-old boy was jailed for seven years for manslaughter while a 13-year-old girl received a youth rehabilitation order and six-month curfew for the same offence. They took to X to express their disapproval In the same podcast interview, Kate added: 'Our children internalise every day. 'They're taking in messages from us, from their friends, from their teachers. And words carry such weight of meaning. '"Oh, stop being silly". "Oh, you are so naughty". "Oh, he's the naughty one". 'We all fall into that trap but our children are paying very close attention to how we think of them. 'And we might dismiss it as a comment - "Oh, he's so untidy". "Oh, she's always late". "She's a bit of a scatterbrain". 'They are internalising. And what they're internalising - because, again, they don't have that fully formed rational brain - "I'm bad. I'm naughty". 'And then it becomes: "That's me. That's who I am".' Elsewhere in the same episode as this controversial parenting discussion, Cat left fans open-mouthed as she revealed her real name live on air. The presenter made the surprise confession during a heartwarming segment for Thank A Teacher Day, where she was reunited with her former primary school teacher. Cat and Ben had been listening to children share stories about their favourite teachers at a school in Surrey when the emotional surprise unfolded. Mrs Cotterill, Cat's own teacher from her school days, appeared via video link - and casually referred to her by her real name, catching viewers off guard. Addressing the star, she said: 'Her name is Katie.' Ben said to Mrs Cotterill: 'Because you of course know her as Katie.' Cat, who received a glowing report from Mrs Cotterill, revealed her real name is Catherine. She went on to share she was known as Katie during her childhood - a far cry from the name fans have come to know her by over the years. 'Well, my real name is Catherine but my grandad always used to call me Katie and my mum and dad and stuff,' she said. 'Unless I was in trouble, then I was sometimes Catherine!' Giving her feedback on Cat, who was delighted to see the familiar face, Mrs Cotterill said: 'She was very enthusiastic, a very kind child. 'Always wanting to help, always wanting to be involved, just actually, an all-round super person.' Cat grew up in Birmingham, attending Grove Vale Junior School before moving on to Dartmouth High School. At just 14, she made it to the national finals of a modelling competition run by the BBC programme The Clothes Show. Her success led to a modelling contract - and it was during this time her name was shortened to Cat, marking the start of her career in the spotlight.

This Morning viewers slam claim common habit harms kids psychologically

During an appearance on This Morning Trisha Goddard was quizzed on her thoughts about a common parenting habit Kate Silverton has claimed 'psychologically damages' kids A parenting debate has erupted on social media after This Morning hosts addressed TV presenter and child therapist Kate Silverton's recent claims that calling children "naughty" can be psychologically damaging, and some viewers are not having it. Silverton, who is a former BBC newsreader and a qualified counsellor, sparked controversy after saying parents should stop using the word altogether. While on the Netmums podcast, she said: "It's just a fallacy to call children naughty. They're not making conscious choices for the majority of the time. They are driven by a very, very immature brain and a nervous system that very often is being triggered." ‌ ‌ Silverton argued that when children are regularly labelled "naughty", they can begin to believe that label defines who they are. When Ben Shephard brought the topic up on This Morning, TV personality Trisha Goddard defended Silverton's ideology, affirming that the words you use to children can have a huge effect on them. She told the ITV show hosts: "I always believe in labelling the behaviour and not the person. "Naughty is probably the light end, but if you keep telling a child they're stupid or they don't know what they're doing or 'gosh you're always clumsy', it absolutely does sit in their head and set a trend. If you talk about the behaviour rather than labelling the child it's a much better way to go." But many viewers didn't agree with the softer parenting approach, and took to social media to voice their frustrations. One person wrote: "If you don't tell a child off then they will think that their behaviour is acceptable." Another went even further, saying: "Stop calling kids 'naughty'? This is why kids carry knives and commit crimes we see today. Soft parenting. The kids parenting the parents because the parents start to become scared of their own kids." Others questioned how the advice would apply to real life tragedies, asking: "What would Trisha say about the actions of the killers of Bhim Kholi?" Bhim Kholi is a man who was murdered while walking his dog in Leicestershire by two teens who have been convicted of manslaughter. ‌ During her appearance on Netmums, Silverton also said: "Our children internalise every day. They're taking in messages from us, from their friends, from their teachers. And words carry such weight of meaning. 'Oh, stop being silly. Oh, you are so naughty. Oh, he's the naughty one'. "We all fall into that trap, but our children are paying very close attention to how we think of them. And we might dismiss it as a comment – 'oh, he's so untidy. Oh, she's always late. She's a bit of a scatterbrain'. "They are internalising. And what they're internalising, because, again, they don't have that fully formed rational brain. 'I'm bad. I'm naughty.' And then it becomes: 'That's me. That's who I am'."

EXCLUSIVE Daniel Bedingfield breaks 10-year silence to slam Leigh Francis for claiming he was DEAD on Celebrity Juice telling the Keith Lemon comic 'f*** you'

Leigh Francis has been blasted by another of his comedy victims, who claims the controversial comic went 'too far' with an outrageous death 'gag.' Chat show host Trisha Goddard and singer Craig David have previously slammed the Bo' Selecta! creator, 52, for his offensive portrayals of the pair on his Channel 4 series. Plus ex-TV host Melanie Sykes also hit out at Leigh for making personal remarks about her during an appearance on ITV series Through The Keyhole, which he hosted in the guise of another of his alter egos, Keith Lemon. And now 10 years after the comic claimed he had passed away while appearing on ITV2 's Celebrity Juice, also in the guise of Lemon, singer Daniel Bedingfield has broken his silence and slated Leigh for the impact the viral gag had on his family. The Gotta Get Thru This hitmaker, who was a showbiz recluse at the time, revealed many loved ones feared Leigh's claim was true and the 'joke' caused much distress. Daniel, who referred to Leigh by the name of another of his comic creations - Avid Merrion, accused the funnyman of taking great 'delight' in tricking the public he had passed away. He said: 'The delight in Avid Merrion telling people I was dead - f**k you, Avid Merrion. 'All my friends called me saying, are you dead? Not cool, man. 'He said I was dead as a human, it's not cool bro. It's too far.' Speaking on the Nicky Byrne HQ podcast, Daniel, 45, added Leigh was part of a culture who enjoyed 'taking down' celebrities and lauded one of his other targets, 7 Days singer Craig, for speaking out about it. He said: 'There's a delight in taking apart the people we respect in Britain, tearing people down. Craig's been really open about that.' Leigh's gag went viral shortly after it was mentioned on Celebrity Juice, which was axed after 14 years in 2022. Daniel became one of the most searched artists on Google in 2015, due to fans desperately trying to find out if Leigh's claim was true. The joke was particularly sensitive for Daniel given he nearly lost his life for real in 2004 following a near fatal car crash in New Zealand, which left him with serious head and neck injuries. Leigh no longer performs as Keith Lemon, or any other of his characters, following a backlash in recent years. The comedian, who now presents a drive time show on Virgin Radio as himself, issued an apology to both Trisha Goddard and Craig David after they criticised him for his 'racist' depictions on Bo' Selecta! Channel 4 have since removed all episodes of from their streaming platforms. Speaking in 2020 in BBC2's Newsnight, Trisha, 67, said: 'A couple of times I bumped into Leigh, I couldn't even talk to him I felt so sick.' She also said Leigh had since 'had a long talk' with one of her daughters and had been 'absolutely horrified' to learn of the bullying she endured at school as a result of his portrayal. And Craig, 44, told in 2023 he moved to America to escape the 'reaction' to his mocking, likening the abuse to childhood bullying. He said: 'It was very reminiscent of days at my school, when I was growing up, when I'd been bullied, not for long periods of time but just the experience of bullying. 'Once you've experienced it, it's like a trauma that sticks with you. Even then, it was that when the teacher's there, you sort of lean in to that 'everything's OK' and it's a smile, and the guy's holding you, he's gripping you like 'if you say anything it's not just going to be here, it's going to be outside the school gates. 'And I felt that all over again with this, it was being ridiculed and bullied all over again on national TV. The fact that he was wearing a black rubber mask, I mean that throws open the whole thing of him blackfacing, which just wouldn't be acceptable now.' Leigh made a public apology in 2020, expressing his regret at mimicking the black stars. He said: 'I portrayed many black people. Back then I didn't think anything about it, people didn't say anything, I'm not going to blame other people. 'I've been talking to some people and I didn't realise how offensive it was back then. 'And I just wanna apologise and, you know, say sorry for any upset I caused.' He added: 'I guess we're all on a learning journey.' Former Big Breakfast presenter Sykes, 54, claimed Leigh's offensive remarks about her while she made a guest appearance on Through The Keyhole left her 'crying all night.' Melanie Sykes told how she even complained to producers about the comments. She said: 'I went into the studio and I didn't think Keith was going to be like he was on the other show that he does (Celebrity Juice) where it's all sex and b*** jobs and talking about people's a***holes and all that. 'I sat there for a three-hour record and he did all of that stuff to me verbally to entertain the live audience – because it was never going to make the edit of the show, because it was a family, Saturday night show, so he used me to entertain the audience. 'I had Jonathan Ross to my right and Jordan Banjo to my left and the first thing that Keith said to me, in character, was: 'I bet your a***hole smells of flowers.' It makes me want to cry right now because I was so caught in the headlights and wasn't expecting it.' She added: 'It went from bad to worse, I kept thinking, what am I going to do? I can't get up and storm out because it will be all over the newspapers that I've walked out and it will, of course, be my fault, everybody in the audience has a mobile phone so they could see.'
