High Point man involved with shooting with troopers

ARCHDALE — A High Point man was shot by a State Highway Patrol trooper during a vehicle chase and wreck along Interstate 85 near Archdale Thursday afternoon. Just before 12:35 p.m., two troopers conducted a traffic stop for a speeding violation on I-85 southbound near the Randolph-Guilford County line. During the traffic stop, a woman in the car was pleading for help as she was being assaulted in the vehicle by a man who authorities identified as Jaylen Deshawn Sawyer, 25. As troopers approached the vehicle, the man fired at the troopers with a handgun. The two troopers returned fire and are believed to have struck the man in the car. The woman got out of the vehicle, and the man took control of the vehicle, traveling south on I-85. A pursuit continued for approximately 8 miles before the vehicle became disabled in the median of I-85 near the S. Main Street exit in Randolph County. The man driving the car had a gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital where he was in critical condition on Thursday. Charges against Sawyer are forthcoming, according to the Highway Patrol. The troopers and the woman weren't injured. The two troopers are identified as Trooper Logan Self, who is a six-year veteran stationed in Guilford County. Self is a field training officer currently assigned to train Trooper Charles Chiarello, who was on his second day on the job. Both troopers have been placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation, which is protocol in any trooper-involved shooting. The incident tied up traffic for several hours along I-85.
