High Point man involved with shooting with troopers
ARCHDALE — A High Point man was shot by a State Highway Patrol trooper during a vehicle chase and wreck along Interstate 85 near Archdale Thursday afternoon.
Just before 12:35 p.m., two troopers conducted a traffic stop for a speeding violation on I-85 southbound near the Randolph-Guilford County line.
During the traffic stop, a woman in the car was pleading for help as she was being assaulted in the vehicle by a man who authorities identified as Jaylen Deshawn Sawyer, 25.
As troopers approached the vehicle, the man fired at the troopers with a handgun. The two troopers returned fire and are believed to have struck the man in the car.
The woman got out of the vehicle, and the man took control of the vehicle, traveling south on I-85. A pursuit continued for approximately 8 miles before the vehicle became disabled in the median of I-85 near the S. Main Street exit in Randolph County.
The man driving the car had a gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital where he was in critical condition on Thursday. Charges against Sawyer are forthcoming, according to the Highway Patrol.
The troopers and the woman weren't injured.
The two troopers are identified as Trooper Logan Self, who is a six-year veteran stationed in Guilford County. Self is a field training officer currently assigned to train Trooper Charles Chiarello, who was on his second day on the job.
Both troopers have been placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation, which is protocol in any trooper-involved shooting.
The incident tied up traffic for several hours along I-85.

Man found guilty of killing, dismembering Sade Robinson after first date in Milwaukee
A Milwaukee man was found guilty on Friday of killing and dismembering a 19-year-old college student on the night of their first date. Prosecutors charged Maxwell Anderson in April 2024 with first-degree intentional homicide, dismembering a corpse, arson and hiding a corpse in connection with Sade Robinson's death. The jury convicted Anderson on all four counts. Investigators believe Anderson killed her on their first date on April 1, 2024, dismembered her body and spread her remains around Milwaukee County. Robinson was last seen alive at Anderson's home. Her arm was found at a Waukegan beach. Robinson's 2020 Civic was found torched the next day, and video showed Anderson leaving the scene where the burned car was found, prosecutors said. He was arrested two days later in a traffic stop by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's office. Anderson's attorney, Tony Cotton, argued during the eight-day trial that no DNA links Anderson to the crimes. Cotton did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on Friday's verdicts. Anderson faces a mandatory life sentence in prison when he's sentenced Aug. 15.
