Good Samaritan truck driver honored as ‘angel'
ARCHDALE — A truck driver from Pennsylvania has received recognition from the Truckload Carriers Association for extinguishing a pickup burning along Interstate 85 in Archdale last month. TCA posted on its website that Kerry Netusil of Hawley, Pennsylvania, was among the latest to be named a TCA Highway Angel. Netusil, a driver for Minnesota-based Bay & Bay Transportation, was driving on I-85 about 12:25 p.m. on April 22 when he saw the pickup on fire and the driver apparently without any way to extinguish the flames. 'I pulled over and ran back with my fire extinguisher,' Netusil told TCA. 'The guy's truck was totaled, and he definitely burned part of his hand in the fire.' Netusil's grandfather and father were both firefighters, Netusil said, and he never hesitated to stop to help the distressed driver. 'I don't like the idea of people losing stuff because I didn't feel like pulling over,' he said. 'It just doesn't sit right with me.' TCA says that since the TCA Highway Angel program began in August 1997, nearly 1,500 professional truck drivers have been recognized as TCA Highway Angels for exemplary kindness, courtesy, and courage displayed while on the job.

Woman stops for gas, leaves with 6-figure lottery prize: 'It felt so unreal'
A North Carolina woman's stop for gas turned into a windfall of nearly a quarter of a million dollars, lottery officials said. Natalie Vega of Asheboro won the $200,000 top prize after buying a $5 scratch-off Prize Link Multiplier ticket from Zingo Express on North Main Street in Archdale, just southeast of Winston-Salem. 'It felt so unreal,' Vega recalled to North Carolina lottery officials. 'It's just overwhelming.' Vega said that it was her first time buying that particular lottery ticket, telling officials: 'I like to just pick random ones.' This was her biggest lottery win ever. 'I've only ever won a couple dollars,' Vega said, per lottery officials. 'I think $20 is the biggest before this.' After scratching off the ticket, it took Vega some time to fully process the big win. 'I had to read the instructions on the ticket like 10 times, just to make sure I was looking at it right," she said. On May 21, Vega went to lottery headquarters in Raleigh to collect her winnings, which, after required state and federal tax withholdings, totaled $143,501. The Prize Link Multiplier game debuted in April with five $200,000 top prizes. Three $200,000 prizes remain to be claimed, according to lottery officials. Vega said she plans to use her winnings to buy some land and invest. Tickets can be purchased in person at gas stations, convenience stores, and grocery stores. Some airport terminals may also sell lottery tickets. High Point man involved with shooting with troopers
ARCHDALE — A High Point man was shot by a State Highway Patrol trooper during a vehicle chase and wreck along Interstate 85 near Archdale Thursday afternoon. Just before 12:35 p.m., two troopers conducted a traffic stop for a speeding violation on I-85 southbound near the Randolph-Guilford County line. During the traffic stop, a woman in the car was pleading for help as she was being assaulted in the vehicle by a man who authorities identified as Jaylen Deshawn Sawyer, 25. As troopers approached the vehicle, the man fired at the troopers with a handgun. The two troopers returned fire and are believed to have struck the man in the car. The woman got out of the vehicle, and the man took control of the vehicle, traveling south on I-85. A pursuit continued for approximately 8 miles before the vehicle became disabled in the median of I-85 near the S. Main Street exit in Randolph County. The man driving the car had a gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital where he was in critical condition on Thursday. Charges against Sawyer are forthcoming, according to the Highway Patrol. The troopers and the woman weren't injured. The two troopers are identified as Trooper Logan Self, who is a six-year veteran stationed in Guilford County. Self is a field training officer currently assigned to train Trooper Charles Chiarello, who was on his second day on the job. Both troopers have been placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation, which is protocol in any trooper-involved shooting. The incident tied up traffic for several hours along I-85.

High Point's growth rate cools slightly
HIGH POINT — The population surge that followed the COVID-19 pandemic continued into 2024 but slightly slowed for High Point, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau estimates. The new figures also show that High Point's post-pandemic growth was somewhat faster than estimates released a year ago showed. The new estimates for incorporated cities and towns, released today, show High Point's population reaching 118,601 on July 1, 2024, up 1,003, or nearly 0.9%, from a year earlier. That compares to a national average growth of 1.1% in metro areas and an overall national average of 1%. The Census Bureau also revised the city's growth from July 1, 2022, to July 1, 2023, upward to 1.6% from the original estimate of 1.2%. From mid-2020 to mid-2024, High Point's population grew by 3.3%. In the immediate High Point area, Kernersville had the greatest growth rate from 2023 to 2024, 2.2%, more than double the rate from the previous year. Since 2020, Kernersville has grown 8.2% to 28,760. Other neighboring towns' growth rates from 2023 to 2024: Wallburg grew just under 2.0% to 3,255; Thomasville grew 0.7% to 27,605; Archdale grew 0.3% to 12,147; and Trinity grew by 0.3% to 7,190. County-by-county population estimates released in March already had shown that Guilford County's population grew 1.1% from July 1, 2023, to July 1, 2024, up from 0.6% the previous year, with four-fifths of the growth attributed to immigration. Like the county estimates in March, today's new city population estimates show the Raleigh and Charlotte areas with the greatest numerical growth in the state. Charlotte, the largest city in the state, grew 2.5% to 943,476 up from 1.7% the previous year, and Raleigh, the second-largest, grew 1.8% to 499,825, down just a hair from 1.9% the previous year. High Point remains the state's ninth-largest city, behind Wilmington — which grew 1.4% to 125,284 — and ahead of Concord — which grew 1.8% to 112,395.
