Princess Anne's horse accident 'so much worse than public knew' as friend admits truth

The Princess Royal was rushed to hospital last year following a serious incident with a horse, which she has no recollection of. Now a source close to Anne has revealed the true toll of her accident Princess Anne is set to celebrate her 75th birthday next month, and while the hardest working royal shows no sign of slowing down, a serious incident last year reminded her that life is precious. ‌ The Princess Royal was rushed to intensive care with a concussion last June following a serious incident with a horse at her home in Gloucestershire. She was treated for head injuries and has since admitted that she "can't remember a thing" from the accident. ‌ Anne had set out alone and on foot to feed her chickens before becoming involved in an incident, where she is believed to have been struck from behind by a horse, that left her concussed and badly bruised. ‌ In an interview back in January, Anne revealed the stark realisation she had after the incident: "It just reminds you, shows you — you never quite know, something [happens] and you might not recover. "You're jolly lucky … if you can continue to be more or less compos mentis and last summer I was very close to not being. Take each day as it comes, they say. You are sharply reminded that every day is a bonus really." ‌ And now a source close to Anne has revealed the true toll of her accident, claiming it was far worse than the public knew. They told The Times: "Her accident was so much worse than anyone let on and it took quite a while for her to feel herself again." The devoted royal went back to work three weeks after the incident, nursing a bruised left eye and face, covered by heavy makeup. Her brave return to duties saw Prince William and Princess Kate write a rare personal message on social media nodding to her tireless dedication. "Super trooper! So great to see you back so soon. W&C x," they wrote. ‌ Last month she returned to horseback riding in public for the first time at King Charles ' birthday event, Trooping the Colour. Anne joined the parade wearing the traditional Blues and Royals mounted uniform in her role as gold stick in waiting. She was was joined on horseback by Prince Edward and Prince William. Anne's steed for the day was Noble, a horse that she rode in the parade last year, who earned a reputation for being 'naughty' after Charles had to control her at Trooping in 2023. The new details about Anne's accident come after she returned to the intensive care unit where she was treated to "fill in the blanks" and thank medics for her care. ‌ The Princess Royal spent five nights at Southmead Hospital in Bristol following the incident. On her return to the hospital in February, Anne met paramedics and members of the critical care team who treated her at the scene, as well as those who cared for her in the ICU, which had not previously been known. The Princess told hospital staff that it was "useful" to meet them as she was still unable to recall what happened. ‌ After touring the intensive care unit and chatting to several medics, including Morwenna Maddock, the ICU matron who oversaw her care, the Princess gave a short speech thanking them for their efforts. You've been filling in the blanks, which partly, from my perspective, is really useful to know how it happened, because I seriously don't have any idea, and sadly, I don't have huge memories of being in here either," she said. "But I just know I was really well looked after, so thank you. But whatever you did, it seemed to work…. the recovery has been relatively straightforward, thankfully. That isn't always true, so I'm really grateful. "But I'm also grateful in a weird sort of way that I remember nothing, because that has huge advantages - you can just carry on."

True extent of Princess Kate's cancer battle revealed

Don't miss out on the headlines from Royals. Followed categories will be added to My News. On June 15 last year Kate, The Princess of Wales really put the 'trooper' into Trooping the Colour and appeared at the annual celebration of the sovereign's birthday, despite being in the middle of chemotherapy. She wore a suitably formal hat and waved with her signature aplomb. But what no one knew at the time was that underneath her Jenny Packham dress there was a port in her chest. A port is a medical device used to draw blood and give treatments, including intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, or drugs such as chemotherapy and antibiotics. Now, new details have come out about how 'serious' the princess' 2024 health battle was with it being claimed she 'is fortunate' to have survived. Holy hell. Buckle up - the word 'serious' is going to appear in this story a lot. Until now, the severity of Kate's 2024 fight has never been revealed, with details hither too thin to the point of non-existence. Kensington Palace has remained firmly tight-lipped about what sort of cancer she had and it was only in January that the world learnt she had been a patient at Chelsea's Royal Marsden Hospital. The Princess of Wales revealed she had cancer. Picture: Danny Lawson / POOL / AFP (During an emotional visit there in January she talked about the 'secrecy' of her treatment and having to use side doors for 'so many quiet visits'.) Kate at Trooping in 2024 might have looked as we have always seen her - perfectly turned out and doing some Olympic-level smiling but behind the scenes, she was reportedly going 'to hell and back'. On Tuesday the Daily Mail's royal editor Rebecca English published a shocking report offering details about what the princess was privately enduring. Even before the dreaded 'c' word entered the picture, per English, the mother-of-three was 'seriously unwell' in the 'run-up' to having 'serious' abdominal surgery in January. In March, as Kate herself announced that testing 'after the operation found cancer' and that she was having chemotherapy. And then comes a bit of a blank in the Kate story. It would be six months before she and husband Prince William and their kids filmed a dreamy video meditation on life, love and the healing power of family and a nice old gnarled oak, in which she announced she had finished her treatment. Kate pictured earlier this month. Picture: Yui Mok/Pool Photo via AP The Mail's new report offers details about those mystery months and the severity of what Kate faced. According to English, when she began treatment last year, she 'was fitted with a semi- permanent 'port' into her chest. 'This small device was inserted under the skin and kept in place until her treatment (delivered via the port through a special needle and a thin tube in vein close to the heart) was over, several weeks later.' It was, the veteran royal editor writes, 'a literal lifeline - which offers no cast-iron guarantee of success, even if you are a royal.' The princess, per English 'is fortunate to even be speaking of recovery' today. The severity of Kate's illness has not been detailed before. This startling new report comes a week after the princess reportedly triggered 'chaos' and 'panic' inside the palace after pulling out of Ascot only half an hour before she was set to arrive at the generally set-down-in-stone event. William and Kate posted a video ton social media. Picture: Instagram Royal staffers, The Daily Beast's Tom Sykes reported, were left 'bewildered and worried' by the dramatic change with rumours briefly swirling around that Kate 'either needed to see a doctor or had been rushed to the hospital.' The Princess of Wales' withdrawing from the event, a source told English on Tuesday, 'is a good reminder that she was really seriously ill last year and underwent a significant period of chemo…It can take years [to recover]'. Similarly a 'well-connected' source has told the Beast's Sykes that the Ascot mini-debacle was 'a wake-up call, not a one-off' and that Kate 'is recalibrating her entire life' after a 'horrific' few years. What that practically means is that Kate is 'expected Kate to dramatically scale back her public appearances for the rest of the year,' per the Beast. The world was shocked after Kate revealed what she had been going through. Picture: Supplied Expect the princess to be seen at Wimbledon, starting June 30, and during the French state visit in July, but we could be in for a very Kate-lite year. English reports that while an overseas tour 'cannot entirely be ruled out' it seems unlikely. In November Willliam will be off to Rio de Janeiro for his Earthshot Prize awards but he could well be travelling solo. The princess possibly going is officially still 'TBC', she reports, 'but my gut feeling is probably not.' As English reported earlier this year, the Princess of Wales has 'been to hell and back'. But what has become clear in the wake of the Ascot mess is that there is 'back' and there is 'back'. The story was all over the globe. Picture: Supplied How long until the princess is ready to return to anything like per-cancer workload is the great unknown. We will next see her courtside at All England Lawn Tennis Club and after that toasting the Macrons but after that, the next Queen is set for a hopefully unbothered Wordsworthian summer stint in Norfolk and Scotland of long walks and lounging about in appropriately elasticised trousers. The future king, who turns 12 next month, helped his younger brother with a little bit of balcony etiquette as they watched King Charles III's birthday parade, Trooping the Colour, on Saturday. Louis was enjoying himself waving to the crowds of cheering fans when George stepped in to let him know when it was time to stop. Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Images Why It Matters The moment was caught on camera and went viral after a post on TikTok was liked 16,900 times and had 234,000 views, having been posted with the caption: "Sigma." Sigma, based on the letter from the Greek alphabet, in youth slang refers to someone who follows their own rules, unbound by social hierarchies and expectations. Prince Louis is known for his cheeky, rebellious behavior on the palace balcony, which has won hearts over the years. What to Know In the clip, Louis can be seen waving to the crowds before appearing to look surprised at the way royal fans responded. Trooping the Colour is an annual military parade marking the official birthday of the British monarch, though not on their actual birthday, which in Charles' case is in November and Queen Elizabeth II was born in April. But Trooping is always on a Saturday in the middle of June. Louis has a long history as the royal family's meme machine, melting hearts and creating instantly viral content from the Buckingham Palace balcony and at other major royal events. Among the most famous examples was at Trooping the Colour in June 2022, the opening day of Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations when he covered his ears during a flypast by the Royal Air Force. What People Are Saying One fan commented, "Why did George stop him? louis was so cute," while the creator of the video replied: "By that time, Louis had already begun to fool around instead of greeting the crowd, that's why George stopped him." Another fan wrote: "So cuteee the way louis looked at his mom twice😭😭he's like 'look mom!! I'm famous!! you're right! people love me!!'" And a third said: "Louis literally the happiest boy in the world by his fans." Jack Royston is chief royal correspondent for Newsweek, based in London. The key royals who were conspicuously absent on Trooping the Colour balcony

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info While the majority of senior working members of the royal family took their prestigious positions on the Palace balcony for Trooping the Colour, some were conspicuously absent from the coveted spot to watch the RAF flypast. King Charles took centre stage, accompanied by Queen Camilla. Prince William and Princess Kate, along with their three children George, Charlotte and Louis, also graced the balcony. Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, made appearances too, alongside the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Princess Anne's husband Vice-Admiral Sir Tim Laurence and the Duke of Kent. READ MORE - Royal fans spot 'major change' for Prince Louis at Trooping the Colour READ MORE - Kate Middleton's 'firm' command to Prince Louis on palace balcony exposed Those who missed out on a balcony spot included Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Prince Andrew, Zara Tindall, and James, the Earl of Wessex, who were also absent from last year's balcony line-up. As expected, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were not part of the Trooping celebrations. Lady Louise Windsor, daughter of Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, was also notably missing from this year's Trooping the Colour, despite her parents securing a spot on the balcony, reports the Mirror. Although Lady Louise doesn't attend all Royal engagements with her parents, many had anticipated her presence at this year's event, given she was invited to last year's celebrations. Although she is not a working Royal and is currently undertaking her studies at St Andrew's University in Scotland, she doesn't often participate in Royal events. Her most recent appearance with the family was during the annual Christmas Day walkabout in Sandringham last year. Traditionally, the late Queen Elizabeth would invite the extended Royal family to join on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the RAF flypast. However, the format of this gathering shifted significantly with the Trooping the Colour ceremony in 2022, which also marked the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. For the first time, the Queen chose to extend the balcony invitation exclusively to working members of the Royal family, subsequently excluding Harry, Meghan, and Prince Andrew from the festivities. Buckingham Palace, commenting on the monarch's decision to limit attendees to those engaged in official public duties, indicated it was made "after careful consideration". Yet there was an exception amongst the non-working royals: Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence was granted balcony access. Sir Tim, Princess Anne's husband, though he holds no Royal duties himself, is a constant presence and support to the Princess Royal during her myriad of Royal engagements. The palace emphasized that the Queen was content to have him on the balcony as he is a regular "frequent attendee and support for the Princess Royal on official engagements".

'Kate's powerful Trooping the Colour change speaks volumes about future'

In a change from last year, the Princess of Wales watched Trooping the Colour on the parade ground alongside the King and Queen - and royal expert Jennie Bond says it was highly significant The Princess of Waleses' subtle change at Trooping the Colour sent a powerful message about her future, according to a royal expert. After enjoying a carriage ride down the Mall with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, Kate watched the military parade in a different position this year. While George, Charlotte and Louis joined other members of the royal family, including the Duchess of Edinburgh in the former office of the Duke of Wellington, Kate took her place next to the King and Queen on the dais, in her role as Colonel of the Irish Guards. Her role with the Irish Guards is a symbolic position and her position on the parade ground was one she was unable to take up last year because she was receiving cancer treatment, and instead watched the ceremony with her children. ‌ ‌ And for former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, Kate's position at the parade was highly significant. She told the Mirror: "I also thought it was highly significant to see Catherine on the dais alongside the King and Queen. "She was there not only as a very senior member of the Royal Family but as Colonel in Chief of the Irish Guards as they marched by. It was a very powerful image of our next Queen alongside her father-in-law who has made no secret of the respect he has for Catherine, especially after the cancer journey they have shared. It certainly gave you the feeling that royal life is pretty much back on track after the scary past 18 months." Another change at Trooping this year was the fact that William stood next to his father King Charles on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the RAF flypast. Last year Kate was invited to stand next to His Majesty. And Jennie added: "I think the fact that William stood next to his father on the balcony was a signal that things are returning to normal. Last year was an exception, with the Princess of Wales taking on her first public duty since her cancer diagnosis, and I think the King was showing his special support for her by asking her to stand alongside him. But today it was the correct order and, in a way, that was quite reassuring. "I'm not sure that George enjoyed the long carriage ride quite as much as his siblings, but he came to life as soon as the flypast began. He's obviously very keen on aircraft and has already had a flying lesson. ‌ "I thought William, and particularly Catherine, were very careful to watch over the children, tell them what was happening next and make sure there were no embarrassing moments. And there weren't. Everyone was on their best behaviour and, in the glorious sunshine, it was a treat for the huge crowds who turned out to see the pageantry and the Royal Family on parade." She continued: "It was genuinely joyful to see Catherine looking so well, so dazzlingly elegant and so happy with her children in the carriage. ‌ "Ever the mum, she put a reassuring hand on Charlotte's knee as the carriage rolled down the Mall from the Palace. But the young Princess also looked full of confidence and smiles, she seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the parade. "Louis was on his best behaviour and George looked rather serious. He seemed rather like a young lad who was thinking 'been here, done it, got the T-shirt!' "But he has a whole life of this sort of thing ahead of him, and I'm sure he'll enjoy it all the more when he's on horseback escorting his father, or indeed, heading up the parade himself."
