A Look Into Angelina Jolie's New Chapter as She Returns to Filmmaking, Fashion and Global Influence
On June 4, Angelina Jolie will celebrate her milestone 50th birthday. In her first 49 years, Jolie has accomplished more than most can dream: She's raised six children — Maddox, 23, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, and 16-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, who she shares with ex Brad Pitt — earned countless awards and become revered worldwide for her humanitarian work. She's not done yet, however — here is a glimpse into everything the Maria star has had going on behind the scenes. After a 14-year absence from the Cannes Film Festival, Angelina made her triumphant return in 2025 to serve as the 'Godmother' tapped to present the prestigious Trophée Chopard to two rising stars on May 16. Angelina is frequently seen at Atelier Jolie, the graffiti-covered fashion retail space she opened in New York City in 2023. She enjoys hosting panel discussions at the collaborative and cultural center–meets–design workshop. In late 2024, Angelina was spotted filming her next movie, Couture, in Paris. The project, which Variety reported is about 'three women whose lives will collide during Fashion Week,' is being shot in both French and English. On May 14, it was announced that Angelina will play a banker opposite 31-year-old White Lotus season 3 breakout star Aimee Lou Wood's hostage-taking robber in the buzzed-about film Anxious People. Also in the pipeline? Big-budget movies, including Disney sequel Maleficent 3 and Maude v Maude — costarring and coproduced by Halle Berry, 58, who's described the flick as Mr. & Mrs. Smith meets Mission: Impossible. 'I have to be [in L.A. because of] a divorce, but as soon as [the twins] are 18, I'll be able to leave,' Angelina said last year. After her youngest become adults in July 2026, she mused, 'I'll spend a lot of time in Cambodia' and 'visiting my family members wherever they may be in the world.'

Trophée Chopard Honoree Marie Colomb on Comedy, Cannes and Acting in English
CANNES, France — On the rooftop of the Hôtel Martinez, Marie Colomb is scrolling through photos of her bulldog — the same one she'd just been chatting about with Angelina Jolie moments before the Trophée Chopard dinner, which resulted in a charming onstage slip-up. The French actress was this year's recipient of the annual prize, presented by Jolie, who was serving as the ceremony's 'godmother'—though Colomb accidentally, and endearingly, thanked her as 'dog mother,' to the delight of the room. Though she admits she was a little nervous before stepping onstage, Jolie's calming presence quickly put her at ease. 'It's in her way of being,' she said. 'I could see she was really grounded. She was incredibly kind and thoughtful. I think she's aware of being the star she is, and that's not always easy. She could sense we were nervous, but once you get past what she represents, there's just a human in front of you — simple and kind.' The honor was a heightened moment for the 29-year-old, who has already had two films premiere at Cannes — 2021's 'The Magnetics' and 2022's 'The Beasts' — although this was her first time being recognized for her full body of work, including her TV series 'Follow' and 'Culte.' 'It felt a bit surreal,' she said. 'I think I'll really process it when I'm back home with my boyfriend and my dog.' Colomb has earned acclaim for her emotionally rich dramatic roles, but she's currently leaning into comedy — a challenge she embraces. 'I really want to explore different genres. Comedy is incredibly hard. It's all about timing. If you're feeling stressed or not well, you can channel that into a dramatic role. But with comedy, you have to feel confident. Otherwise, it just doesn't land, and it shows.' Ultimately, she picks projects rooted in humanity. 'I'm drawn to films that, maybe it's cliché to say, are full of love. Stories about people. Sometimes it's comedy, sometimes drama, but they make me want to live,' she said. Raised in a small town in southwestern France, Colomb knew early on that acting was it for her. At just six years old, she penned a letter to her mother declaring her intention to be on stage and screen. 'It's cliché, but I fell in love with it then and never had a plan B,' she said. Though she hasn't yet taken on an English-language project, she's also up for that challenge. 'I know I'm capable, it's just a mental block. But if someone offered me a role in English tomorrow, I'd be working on it nine hours a day,' she said. She's also attuned to the shifts in the industry, particularly how global platforms have changed the game for independent films, which has been a hot topic at Cannes. 'There are many positives, but I don't yet have the hindsight to say how much. Still, even if we're not saving lives by making films, it does matter,' she remarked. 'In a world that's as complicated as ours, cinema can offer real comfort,' she added. 'It still influences how people are seen — minorities, different perspectives. It shapes the way we look at others.' Colomb is also embracing the fashion world, particularly as luxury houses continue investing in cinema. She's been a front row guest at Balenciaga, Chloé and Rabanne during Paris Fashion Week, and her appreciation of fashion is growing. 'At first, it was a world that really impressed me. It wasn't mine. It seemed superficial. And yes, there's that side to it,' she said. 'But lately, I've become genuinely interested in the artistry and craftsmanship. Like anything, once you look closely, there's a lot to admire. And let's be honest, it's also a business. But I love that brands are increasingly supporting film.' For the Trophée Chopard dinner, she wore a pink feathered Prada mini dress that she called an 'immediate, visual way to have fun.' Her personal style IRL is simpler: a white T-shirt, a short Prada skirt, and anything 'comfortable…and a little bit rockstar.' It's her first formal relationship with a brand, and she's enjoying the freedom it gives her to play with identity. 'It's like we say in France — style, we don't take it too seriously, you know?' she said, joking about the myth of 'effortless' French girl style that actually takes a lot of work behind the scenes. She's seen a shift in that aesthetic due to social media, plus the speeding up of the fashion cycle as entertainment. 'I do think fashion has taken up a lot more space recently,' she said. 'People see you first through what you wear — and it matters.' Angelina Jolie's Stunning Nude Gown Steals The Show At Cannes
Angelina Jolie, the godmother of the Trophée Chopard Award at this year's Cannes Film Festival, made a stunning debut on the red carpet this evening. Jolie stepped out for the premiere of Eddington in a shimmering nude gown by Brunello Cucinelli, adorned with delicate embellishments. She completed the look with a diamond necklace and matching earrings, wearing her blonde hair down in a soft side part. FIND OUT MORE ON ELLE COLLECTIVE Jolie will be presenting the Trophée Chopard Award to Marie Colomb and Finn Bennett. She posed with them and Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele on the red carpet: Scheufele spoke glowingly of Jolie's appointment to the godmother role, telling WWD, 'I am so happy to welcome Angelina Jolie as our Trophée Chopard Godmother. Her amazing film career and dedication to making a difference in the world make her an ideal role model. I know the rising talents we honour this year will be inspired by her journey and advice.' Jolie added, 'I am honoured to be Godmother at the Cannes Film Festival. I am pleased to have a moment to recognise young artists and their exceptional work.' Jolie will mentor Colomb and Bennett through the year. This is Jolie's first big red carpet appearance since the Critics Choice Awards in February. The star spoke to W magazine at the start of the year about whether she always wanted to be an actress. 'I did it in the beginning because it was my mother's dream,' she said. 'She pursued acting, but by the time my mom was 25, she was divorced with two kids and she decided to focus her life solely on motherhood. She didn't make me feel like it was a sacrifice—she loved being a stay-at-home mom. But she really wanted me to be an actress. I don't remember making the choice. I remember it made my mom happy. My mom was my manager, and we were a team. I always wanted to buy her a house, and I started to pay the bills. When my mom passed, it was harder for me to be an actress because I realized how much of it was for her.' ELLE Collective is a new community of fashion, beauty and culture lovers. Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry Celebrate Trophée Chopard in Cannes
CANNES, France — The Trophée Chopard gala was full of sparkle, from not just the jewels but the star presence of Angelina Jolie. Jolie is serving as godmother to this year's honorees, Marie Colomb and Finn Bennett. In a white Tom Ford gown and a pair of Chopard diamond earrings, she took to the stage to celebrate the rising stars and acknowledge the film festival as not only a celebration of glamour, but human connection and artistic courage. 'I love international cinema. We are brought to other lands, into private moments, even on the battlefield, we connect and we empathize.' Jolie placed the spotlight on building bridges between people, and highlighted the film 'My Father's Shadow,' which will have its Cannes premiere in the Un Certain Regard section on Sunday. The drama about the 1993 Nigerian election crisis and political unrest marks the first time a Nigerian film has been in competition. The inclusion of the film is a step forward, Jolie said. 'Anything that is possible to make international cinema more accessible is necessary and welcome,' she said. Ever the activist, Jolie popped the Cannes bubble to draw attention to the current state of conflicts around the world. 'None of us are naive. We know that many artists around the world lack the freedom and security to tell their stories, and many have lost their lives,' she said, citing Fatima Hasuna, killed in Gaza; Shaden Gardood, killed in Sudan, and Victoria Amelina, killed in Ukraine. A documentary titled 'Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk,' about Hasuna's life as a photojournalist in Gaza, will be screened in Cannes. Jolie went on to underscore the role of artists and cinema. 'We owe all of those risking their lives and sharing their stories and experiences a debt of gratitude, because they have helped us to learn and to evolve,' she said. Jolie was on hand to honor this year's Trophée Chopard recipients, Marie Colomb and Finn Bennett. 'You have both been acknowledged for the extraordinary versatility, authenticity and empathy that you bring to your roles and as rising talents in global cinema,' she said, and highlighted their future promise as actors. 'Thank you both for your contribution that you have already made to film and storytelling and for everything that you will go on to do creatively.' A very nervous Colomb thanked Jolie in her role of godmother of the prize. But she added a moment of levity with a little slip up. 'It's really such an honor to have you as a dog mother,' she said, before quickly correcting her error. The French actress said they had been talking about dogs before (Chopard copresident Caroline Scheufele's Cavalier King Charles spaniel Byron was in attendance at the ceremony) and apologized with a laugh that was received with wide applause from the audience. Bennett thanked Jolie for her work on and off the screen. 'Her work with humanitarian causes and ecological causes means she is someone who is and will always be on the right side of history,' he said. 'I can't say thank you enough. I'm a very lucky boy.' Members of the jury including president Juliette Binoche, Jeremy Strong, Hong Sang-soo, Alba Rohrwacher, Dieudo Hamadi, Payal Kapadia, Leïla Slimani and Carlos Reygadas, as well as Camera d'Or jury president Alice Rohrwacher and Carla Bruni, were on hand to celebrate. Berry said she is enjoying the festival so far, despite the hectic schedule. 'I'm having the time of my life,' she said. She was wearing a black Jacquemus dress — her second of the festival by the designer — and a stunning Chopard snake necklace. Festival president Iris Knobloch thanked longtime Cannes partner Chopard and Scheufele for supporting the festival. 'In a world where everything moves faster, where alliances form and fade with passing trends, our rare and precious bond is the creation of an exceptional woman, Caroline,' she said. 'Thank you so much for your unwavering loyalty, generosity and your invaluable friendship, and thank you to Chopard for continuing year after year to illuminate the timeless jewel that is the film festival.' The event, held at the Carlton beach, was unwittingly set to the thumping music of a party next door. The beat was so pervasive that Bruni, who had been slated to perform, bowed out of her closing song. Angelina Jolie Delivers Humanitarian Message at Chopard Dinner in Front of Quentin Tarantino, Cannes Jury: 'None of Us Are Naive'
Angelina Jolie is at the Cannes Film Festival, not with a film in the lineup but with official duties thanks to the festival's longtime (and glamorous) sponsor, Chopard. The Oscar winner agreed to serve as this year's Chopard Godmother, a gig that saw her preside over Friday night's A-list Trophée Chopard dinner at Carlton Beach and present trophies to an actor and actress anointed as next generational talent by a jury comprised of previous recipients of the esteemed festival honor. This year's awards went to French actress Marie Colomb and breakout British star Finn Bennett, most recently seen in Alex Garland's Warfare and opposite Jodie Foster in True Detective: Night Country. Cannes: 'The Creep' Remake Sells for U.K. (Exclusive) The honors were doled out during what is always a glitzy ceremony attended by Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch, general delegate Thierry Frémaux, Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele, members of the competition jury and A-list guests. Friday night was no different as this year's event hosted Quentin Tarantino (who was seated across from Jolie), Carla Bruni, and jury members Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong and president Juliette Binoche. The godmother always offers introductory remarks and Jolie maximized her time by professing a love for international cinema while staying true to her humanitarian activism and calling attention to tragic stories of women who lost their lives amid war and conflict abroad. 'I love international cinema. We are brought to other lands, into private moments, even on the battlefield, we connect and we empathize. I think of films like My Father Shadow, which is premiering here at Cannes. Anything that is possible to make international cinema more accessible is necessary and welcome,' said Jolie. 'And none of us are naive. We know that many artists around the world lack the freedom and security to tell their stories, and many have lost their lives, like Fatima Hassouna, killed in Gaza, Shaden Gardood killed in Sudan, and Victoria Amelina killed in Ukraine, and so many other extraordinary artists who should be with us now. We owe all of those risking their lives and sharing their stories and experiences a debt of gratitude, because they have helped us to learn and to evolve.' Jolie continued by saying that people convened in Cannes not just for glamour but connection. 'What brings us here is not carpets, even though they're lovely, but what brings us here is to connect to each other through international cinema and the opportunity to be with creative people,' she added. 'So I am very honored to be with so many brilliant global artists, including our honorees tonight, Finn Bennett and Mary Colon. You have both been acknowledged for the extraordinary versatility, authenticity, and empathy that you bring to your roles and as rising talents in global cinema. Thank you both for your contribution that you have already made to film and storytelling, and for everything that you will go on to do creatively.' In accepting, Bennett thanked his agent Bella Wingfield, 'whose belief in me really still confounds me,' his 'beautiful partner' Anna, and Jolie. 'I'm incredibly, incredibly honored to be presented this award by such a revered actor and filmmaker. But she's not only that, her work in humanitarian causes and ecological causes means she's someone who is and will always be on the right side of history.' Though the night was expected to close with a musical performance from actress, singer and former first lady of France, Carla Bruni. But due to noise from the venue next door, which was playing loud music amid a competing bar, Bruni bailed even after the musicians were assembled on stage. She later took to Instagram to slam the venue and thank Scheufele for the opportunity. 'When it came time to sing and when it came time to present the Chopard trophies, our neighbors decided to play music so deafening that we couldn't even hear the names of the winners. … We had prepared five or six songs for the guests. We were looking forward to playing this evening,' explained the wife of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy. 'We couldn't play because the Carlton Beach decided to have a party, with no respect for the artists next door, with no respect for the Chopard trophies. I would like to thank Caroline Scheufele and tell her that I will come and sing whenever she wants, for free. Thank you to the Carlton Beach for the awful racket you imposed on us.'
