Sean Payton expects ex-Oregon WR Troy Franklin to shine in 2025 NFL season
Sean Payton expects ex-Oregon WR Troy Franklin to shine in 2025 NFL season Some players in the National Football League develop more quickly than others. In the case of current Denver Broncos wide receiver and former Oregon football standout Troy Franklin, it took about half a season. But once he did find his footing in the Mile High City, Franklin was doing the exact same thing he was doing at Autzen Stadium, catching big passes and scoring touchdowns. Head coach Sean Peyton took notice and sees Franklin's growth on the field as a promising sign for 2025. He saw something similar in another receiver on the Denver roster, Marvin Mims. "I think you're going to see those type of ascensions with players like Troy (Franklin)," Peyton said. Mims caught 22 passes for 377 yards and just one touchdown in 2023. But in 2024, Mims improved tremendously with 39 catches for 503 yards and six trips to the end zone. Denver's quarterback situation was a bit different with Bo Nix behind center last season rather than the often-injured Russell Wilson. For his rookie campaign, Franklin had 28 receptions for 263 yards and two touchdowns. Hopefully, Franklin can have a similar uptick in numbers. If he does, the Broncos will have a nice 1-2 punch at the receiver position for 2025 and beyond. Broncos WR Troy Franklin changes jersey number ahead of second NFL season
Number news! Denver Broncos second-year wide receiver Troy Franklin shared a photo on his Instagram story on Wednesday that showed his locker with jersey No. 11, a change from the No. 16 he wore as a rookie last season. Advertisement Franklin wore No. 11 at Oregon -- where he played with quarterback Bo Nix -- but when he was drafted by the Broncos last April, that number was already held by veteran receiver Josh Reynolds. The number is now available following Reynolds' departure. Franklin, 22, hauled in 28 receptions for 263 yards and two touchdowns last fall. Now entering his second year in the league, he'll aim to build on those totals in 2025. Elsewhere on the number front, free agent additions including tight end Evan Engram (No. 1), wide receiver Trent Sherfield (No. 5), safety Talanoa Hufanga (No. 9) and linebacker Dre Greenlaw (No. 57) have already picked their numbers. Engram will become the first tight end in the NFL's modern era to wear No. 1. Advertisement The roster on the team's official website does not yet list numbers for linebacker K.J. Cloyd, quarterback Sam Ehlinger, punter Matt Haack or offensive lineman Will Sherman. Bo Nix will throw with Broncos WRs ahead of offseason workouts Broncos WR Troy Franklin putting in work 😤 — Broncos Wire (@TheBroncosWire) April 2, 2025 Denver Broncos quarterbacks and wide receivers worked out in Texas ahead of training camp last summer. That tradition seems likely to continue this year, and a spring session has been added to the mix. Ahead of the start of offseason workouts later this month, Broncos quarterback Bo Nix will get together for passing sessions with a group of wide receivers that includes Courtland Sutton and Marvin Mims, according to a report from the Denver Gazette's Chris Tomasson. Tomasson spoke to Mims' father, who said his son has spent the offseason in Denver and has been working out at Park Powered by CommonSpirit. Meanwhile, fellow receiver Troy Franklin shared several videos of his route running at an indoor facility on his Instagram story on Wednesday: The Broncos can begin their offseason program on Monday, April 21, so the spring throwing sessions with Nix and Co. are likely right around the corner.
