Key White House adviser says he expects Trump-Putin meeting ‘imminently'

A top Trump administration official raised eyebrows Thursday by predicting that a meeting between the US president and Russian strongman Vladimir Putin would happen 'imminently.' 'At the end of the day, the final settlement will see my boss, President Trump, in the room, sealing the deal,' senior director for counterterrorism Sebastian Gorka said during an interview at Politico's Security Summit about Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. When reporter Dasha Burns asked Gorka, 'Why has the president not met with President Putin?', the official answered: 'Well, we can't force Putin to meet. 'Deals are all about timing,' he added. 'When the time is right, that's when the president is in the room with Putin. But my expectation is imminently.' When Burns tried to press for more details, Gorka responded: 'That's all you're getting.' 3 President Trump has teased that the war in Ukraine won't end until he gets together with Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin. POOL/AFP via Getty Images A source close to the White House told The Post Thursday there are no plans yet for any sitdown between Trump and Putin. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dispatched a team of negotiators to Istanbul on Thursday for what had been billed as the first direct talks between the warring countries in three years. Zelensky had offered to personally travel to Turkey and meet with Putin to try to broker a cease-fire but the Kremlin tyrant was not part of the Moscow delegation. The Trump administration dispatched a delegation that included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff to partake in the talks, but the president sounded skeptical of success. 'Nothing is going to happen until Putin and I get together,' he told reporters aboard Air Force One Thursday. 'He wasn't going if I wasn't there. I don't believe anything's going to happen, whether you like it or not, until he and I get together. But we're going to have to get it solved cause too many people are dying.' 3 Senior director for counterterrorism Dr. Sebastian Gorka didn't elaborate on what he meant by 'imminently.' AFP via Getty Images 'You can rest assured that when the final ink is put on that piece of paper,' Gorka reiterated Thursday, 'President Trump will be the person, the man behind the art of the deal, who seals that deal and stops the meat grinder that is the war in Ukraine.' Trump had made ending the war a top objective of his second term's foreign policy, and has at times been visibly frustrated by the lack of progress in a brokering a peace deal. Zelensky previously backed a Trump-proposed 30-day cease-fire, but the Russians rejected it and opted for a scaled-down pause on attacks against Ukrainian infrastructure instead. Putin has worked to flatter Trump over recent months. Earlier this year, Witkoff recounted Putin telling him that he rushed to church and prayed for Trump after an assassination attempt in Butler, Pa. this past July 13. The Kremlin leader also 'commissioned a beautiful portrait of President Trump, from the leading Russian artist' and gave it to Witkoff to send to Trump.

Trump live news: White House slams Amazon plan to show tariff price hikes

Update: Date: 10m ago (16:20 GMT) Title: Republicans to advance additional military spending Content: The Republican-controlled House Armed Services Committee is expected to advance $150bn in additional funding for the US military later today. If passed, the bill – which needs to be approved by the full House and the Senate – would take the Pentagon budget to nearly $1 trillion. The additional funds include $25bn for a 'Golden Dome for America', a Trump-proposed missile defence system, inspired by Israel's Iron Dome, which is partly paid-for by the US. Update: Date: 20m ago (16:10 GMT) Title: Trump actions have faced at least 210 legal challenges Content: Many analysts have argued the Trump administration has sought to test the limits of presidential power through a barrage of executive orders. Many of those orders cut to the heart of which rights are guaranteed in the US, and were likely issued with the expectation they would be challenged in court and would eventually reach the US Supreme Court. To date, there have been at least 210 cases challenging Trump's orders, ranging from his initial effort to end birthright citizenship, his widespread firing of federal employees, and his attempts to deport green card holders for taking part in pro-Palestine advocacy, to name a few. All told, just four cases have been closed, according to a tracker on the Just Security website. Update: Date: 30m ago (16:00 GMT) Title: House Speaker Johnson calls Trump 'most consequential' US leader of century Content: Mike Johnson has heaped praise on Trump, calling him 'the most consequential American leader of the 21st Century'. Johnson enumerated what he described as achievements by the Trump administration over the past 100 days, including removing 'men from women's sports' and ending diversity programmes. He also praised Trump's trade policies, which have rocked the stock market, and lauded the US president for combatting what he called 'virulent anti-Semitism on college campuses'. The Trump administration has been sending immigration agents to detain foreign students, including legal permanent residents, for criticising Israel's policies. Free speech advocates have warned that the campaign violates the US Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression. Update: Date: 40m ago (15:50 GMT) Title: What has Trump done in 100 days? Here's his scorecard Content: At the 100-day mark, Trump has: For more on the numbers that have defined Trump's second term so far, check out our scorecard here. Update: Date: 50m ago (15:40 GMT) Title: Trump talks up his frequent media interactions Content: The US president has shared a screengrab from Fox News saying he has had 71 interactions with the media in his first 100 days while Biden had 21 over the same period. The former Democratic president did not make himself frequently available to direct questions from the news media while Trump often chats to reporters. However, the White House has offered media credentials to right-wing internet personalities who often kick-start briefings with statements framed as questions that emphasise Trump's talking points and rebuke the president's critics. Update: Date: 55m ago (15:35 GMT) Title: Amazon denies it plans to list tariff prices on site Content: Amazon says the team that runs its low-cost platform, Amazon Haul, had 'considered listing import charges on certain products'. However, 'this was never a consideration for the main Amazon site and nothing has been implemented on any Amazon properties,' it said in a statement. Punchbowl News quoted an unnamed source in a report on the alleged plan, which was published as Trump's tariffs are expected to raise prices for US consumers. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt decried the reported plan as a 'hostile and political act'. Update: Date: 1h ago (15:30 GMT) Title: US consumer confidence hits five-year low Content: New data from The Conference Board, an organisation that tracks views on the US economy, indicates consumer confidence has plummeted. Confidence fell 7.9 points to 86 in April as Trump's tariff rollout caused widespread economic uncertainty. The score is the lowest since May 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. 'Consumer confidence declined for a fifth consecutive month in April,' Conference Board senior economist Stephanie Guichard said in a statement. 'The three expectation components – business conditions, employment prospects, and future income – all deteriorated sharply, reflecting pervasive pessimism about the future.' Update: Date: 1h ago (15:20 GMT) Title: What did Carney say about US-Canada relations after election win? Content: The Liberal party yesterday secured more votes than any other party in Canada, assuring leader Mark Carney would remain prime minister for the foreseeable future. Carney's victory, which followed a massive polling boost amid Trump's trade war, was largely buoyed by unease over relations with Canada's southern neighbour. The former head of the Bank of England and Bank of Canada vowed resolve when dealing with Trump, while also seeking to position himself as a global leader seeking to fill the void left by the US. 'We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,' Carney said. 'As I've been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country.' 'These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us,' he said in his victory speech. 'That will never … ever happen. But we also must recognise the reality that our world has fundamentally changed.' Read more about Carney's win, here. Update: Date: 1h ago (15:10 GMT) Title: Top Democrat calls Trump's first 100 days 'unmitigated disaster' Content: As Donald Trump celebrates perceived achievements in the first 100 days of his second presidency, Democrats are painting a different picture of his tenure so far. 'The Trump administration has been an unmitigated disaster over the first 100 days,' House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries wrote in a social media post. 'These extremists are not fit to govern and we will hold them accountable.' Update: Date: 1h ago (15:00 GMT) Title: How falsehoods drove Trump's immigration crackdown in his first 100 days Content: In his first 100 days in office, Trump invoked archaic immigration laws, questioned judges' power to rule against his decisions and attempted to end several legal immigration pathways. Trump began laying the groundwork for his immigration plans long before his January 20 inauguration. For years, Trump and his allies have said falsely or without evidence that the US is being invaded by immigrants who are driving up crime rates and that foreign countries are sending their prisoners and mentally ill people to the US. Several Trump administration officials also said courts cannot and should not rule on Trump's immigration actions because they deal with national security and foreign policy issues. In doing so, Trump 'is seeking a lack of accountability to do things that the law otherwise prohibits', said Matthew Lindsay, a University of Baltimore law professor. Trump envoy received with open arms by grinning Putin for what could be the final US peace talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff with open arms and a wide grin Friday, photos show — as the two met in Moscow for what could be the last round of US talks to convince him to end his brutal war on Ukraine. Witkoff mirrored Putin's smile, greeting him like an old friend, the photos show. The envoy will be presenting the Russian leader with a proposed peace plan. President Trump has repeatedly insisted this week that he is ready to abandon the US role in the talks should Ukraine and Russia not agree to the proposal. 4 Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomes President Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff with open arms to Moscow on Friday. via REUTERS Some insiders and experts, however, question why Trump would give up his efforts to achieve peace without first following through on threats to sanction Russia — or otherwise apply tangible pressure in any way. 'Where is the 'strength' in 'peace through strength'?' one former official from Trump's first administration told The Post. 'He's strong on Ukraine, but nothing for Russia?' 'The Russia 'collusion' was a hoax in Trump 1,' another added. 'But Trump 2.0, I'm not so sure.' 4 Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin smile at each other while shaking hands on Friday. KRISTINA KORMILITSYNA/SPUTNIK/KREMLIN POOL/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock Ukraine has already spoken out against the proposed plan after agreeing to a previous one in London with European and US leaders. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday said that the plan was suddenly switched out for one that included a red line for Kyiv: the recognition of Ukraine's Crimea as Russian. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine during Moscow's initial invasion of the country in 2014. A recognition of the territory as Russian would break both the Ukrainian constitution and longtime US foreign policy under the Welles Declaration that holds Washington will not recognize annexed territory as belonging to the aggressor. 4 Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff grins as he visits with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday. AP Despite Kyiv agreeing immediately to a previous Trump-proposed temporary cease-fire — while Moscow rejected it — Russia has consistently and blatantly attempted to paint Ukraine as the party guilty for the dragged-out talks. Trump had hoped to end the war on his first day in office, which later became within his first 100 days — a deadline fast approaching next week. In recent weeks, he has grown increasingly frustrated with the war continuing to rage. 'The war has been raging for three years. I just got here, and you say, 'what's taking so long?'' he snapped at a reporter Friday who asked about Trump's self-imposed deadlines. On Thursday, he issued rare criticism of Putin in a Truth Social post, telling the Russian leader to 'STOP' his continued assaults on Ukraine as Trump's team attempts to work out a peace deal. 4 President Donald Trump speaks to the media as he departs the White House on April 25. Getty Images 'I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV,' Trump raged, referencing overnight attacks that killed nine, including two children from the same family. 'Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Lets get the Peace Deal DONE!' Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday said he didn't know if a peace deal would be signed 'by the end of the week' as Trump had hoped, according to the Kyiv Independent.

Foreign policy experts told The Sun that the timing of the strike shows that "Russia does not want peace". They argued that cripling Ukraine with massive attacks might force Zelensky - who is taking pressure from both Trump and Putin - to accept the current peace deal, which favours Russia. And that Russia will keep bombing Ukraine and kill civilians if Kyiv does not accept the Trump-proposed peace deal. Putin kills at least 9 in horror missile blitz on Kyiv in deadliest attack on Ukraine's capital since war erupted Dr Stephen Hall, expert in Russian and Post-Soviet Politics, said: "Putin is showing yet again that he doesn't actually want peace, that the Russians don't want peace, and that Russia has the capacity to strike Kyiv and Kharkiv as well. "Ukraine needs to find a way around this peace deal that the Americans are proposing. "Ukraine needs American support in terms of intelligence, sharing and in terms of weapons and keeping the Americans on side. The Europeans also need the Americans to be on their side." And launching massive attacks using missiles and drones shows that Putin is willing to go on with the strikes if Kyiv does not accept a deal. Mr Hall said that Ukraine needs to strike a deal as soon as possible, but Trump could force Ukraine into a "corner" to achieve one. He added: "Donald Trump wants to do a deal as quickly as possible. "He has this 100 days idea that he has to achieve peace in 100 days, and so the easiest way to achieve that is to coerce Ukraine into a corner." "And I think we have a deal with Russia — we have to get a deal with Zelensky.' He added, 'I think we have a deal with both. I hope they do it. You would never have had that war if I were president.' The Telegraph reported on a seven-point peace plan being drawn up by the US, which could allow Russia to keep various land seized from Ukraine. According to the plan, Putin would stay close to the territory his cannon fodder troops have seized from Zelensky, as outlined in an unconfirmed seven-point plan to end the war. It would leave Ukraine with no clear US security guarantee. And includes the US offering formal recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea while implying de facto recognition of other occupied territories. Meanwhile, JD Vance also slapped Russia and Ukraine with a blistering ultimatum, warning both countries that the US would "walk away" if they didn't find peace.
