MAI NGUYEN TOKYO -- One of Vietnam's biggest automakers has stepped up with a plan to be the lead builder of a government-proposed high-speed railway covering much of the country's coast. Truong Hai Group, commonly known as THACO, says it will invest in a $61 billion high-speed railway project, becoming the second major Vietnamese corporation to announce such an intention in less than a month. Vingroup submitted a similar proposal on May 6.

Vietnam's Chu Lai Port under Truong Hai International Logistics Limited Liability Company (THILOGI), a member of the Truong Hai Group, and Bangkok-based Regional Container Lines (RCL) recently signed an agreement to launch a direct call service from Chu Lai to India. The same day, Chu Lai Port welcomed Chana Bhum, a Singapore-flagged vessel operated by RCL, marking the opening of the Chu Lai-India shipping route. The Chana Bhum carried nearly 800 containers with goods that included garment and furniture. India is Vietnam's largest trading partner in South Asia now, accounting for nearly four-fifths of total export turnover to this region.
