Truth Farm educates public on the importance of Narcan following student overdose
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – After a Tompkins County student overdosed on fentanyl last week, Truth Pharm is educating the public on the importance of Narcan. The Dryden Central School District released a letter to the public stating that a student overdosed on fentanyl after using what they believed was a marijuana vape. After collapsing in the hallway, the student was administered multiple doses of Narcan. The vape was not purchased at a licensed dispensary but at an independent convenience store that was not permitted to sell marijuana products. Executive Director of Truth Pharm Alexis Pleus commended Dryden for their approach to the incident. She encourages schools to carry Narcan and train their staff because it could save a life. Pleus says it's important to use non stigmatizing language when discussing substance use, especially with children. 'Students are going to dabble and try. This is an age old thing, it's been going on for decades. What parents need to do when they have conversations with their kids is make sure that they're aware of the potential risks and dangers but recognize we can't control our kids once they leave the house. Most likely they're going to do things that we don't approve of. Their judgment center isn't fully developed. And what can they do to stay as safe as possible? Have Narcan on hand,' Pleus said. Truth Pharm offers free Narcan kits and fentanyl testing strips as well as Narcan training, education sessions, and support services. Several Naloxboxes are installed around the community for quick access to the lifesaving medication. Who were the victims of the shooting outside the DC Jewish Museum? Truth Pharm aims to ‘build a more just future' with new mural
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Truth Pharm's newest masterpiece is proving recovery can be beautiful. Truth Pharm recently received a $2,000 grant from Ithaca Mural's Thriving Future initiative to create a mural on its building, located at 49 Pine Street in Binghamton. The project began on Sunday, employing several staff members, volunteers, community members, and clients. The theme of the mural is 'building a more just future.' It features three figures that represent activism, cross-generational collaboration, and healthy living. There are also images of flowers and insects native to the local area, representing living in harmony with the environment. Mia Hause is the Community Arts Liaison. She says Truth Pharm has wanted to create a mural for a very long time. 'It's really important for us to have a really bright and welcoming space. We don't want to feel intimidating or sterile to the folks who receive our services. We've put in a lot of effort to do that inside of our office, and now we're really excited to bring that to the neighborhood on a broader level,' said Hause. Hause says Truth Pharm is hoping the mural also makes the building more recognizable to those seeking services. The mural is expected to be complete by the end of next week. There will be an unveiling ceremony during the next First Friday on June 6. Truth Pharm continues to combat opioid crisis with new initiatives
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local non-profit organization dedicated to educating the community on substance use is inviting the public to join it in the fight to end overdose. Truth Pharm is hosting a monthly event called 'Train the Trainer'. During the 90-minute session, those in attendance will learn about addiction and how to use Narcan properly. They will then earn a certification that allows them to teach others how to use the lifesaving medication. Participants will also leave with five Narcan kits to distribute. Truth Pharm has a goal of training 100 Broome County residents through the program. So far, it has trained over 60 people. Founder and Executive Director Alexis Plues says she hopes participants walk away feeling empowered because they have the tools needed to save a life. 'You're more likely to come across a person experiencing an overdose than a heart attack. A lot of us have become CPR certified just because we want to be good community members and be able to help someone who might need it. Narcan training is the same thing,' said Plues. The next training session is on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Truth Pharm office, located at 49 Pine Street in Binghamton. In addition, Truth Pharm has a new initiative for certified Narcan trainers. The Broome Overdose Prevention Specialists, or BOPS, are a volunteer team who brainstorm new ways to educate the community and prevent overdose in Broome County. The group meets the second Thursday of every month. Truth Pharm is also preparing for the annual Trail of Truth. Trail of Truth honors those who have lost their lives to substance use disorder while offering support to families and individuals impacted by overdose. The event will take place on August 16 in downtown Binghamton.
