PHIVOLCS: No tsunami threat to PH after strong Russia earthquake

The earthquake struck Kuril Islands at 1:38 p.m. (PH time) on Sunday, August 3, 2025. PHIVOLCS The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Sunday afternoon said there is no threat of tsunami to the country after a strong earthquake hit Russia. "No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data," PHIVOLCS said in its Tsunami Information No. 1 issued at 1:53 p.m. This came after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Russia's Kuril Islands at 1:38 p.m. (PH time) on Sunday, the German Research Center for Geosciences said. The United States Geological Survey and the Pacific Tsunami Warning System however recorded the earthquake at magnitude 7. On Wednesday, July 30, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake hit Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula. PHIVOLCS issued a tsunami alert that morning for coastal areas in the eastern part of the Philippines, but lifted the alert in the afternoon. —KG, GMA Integrated News

No tsunami threat from Davao Occidental quake —PHIVOLCS

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Saturday said there is no tsunami threat following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that occurred offshore Davao Occidental. "No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake," PHIVOLCS said in its Tsunami Information No. 1. "However, earthquakes of this size may generate unusual sea level disturbances that may be observed along coasts near earthquake epicenter of Davao Occidental and nearby provinces," it added. The magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck at 7:07 a.m. in the waters off Sarangani Island in the municipality of Sarangani in Davao Occidental. The quake had a depth of 10 km and was tectonic in origin. Intensity V was felt in Malungon, Sarangani, PHIVOLCS said. Meanwhile, Intensity IV was recorded in Kiamba in Sarangani, and General Santos City in South Cotabato. PHIVOLCS said damage and aftershocks may be expected. —KG, GMA Integrated News
