Dr M's new Malay platform key to uniting divided community, says Tuan Ibrahim
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said all Malay-based parties must come under a single, broad coalition as a platform to safeguard the community's future. PETALING JAYA : PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has defended Dr Mahathir Mohamad's new platform to unite the Malays, saying the proliferation of political parties is one of the main reasons behind disunity within the community. He said the democratic system had allowed the formation of many political parties and, therefore, a grand alliance involving intellectuals, corporate figures, politicians and religious scholars was needed to unite the Malays. 'All segments must support this new platform. The proliferation of Malay-dominated parties is seen as a cause of division, and this is difficult to control because democracy allows it.' He said all Malay-based parties must come under a single, broad coalition as a platform to safeguard the community's future. When asked if this movement was a better platform to unite Malays compared to Perikatan Nasional (PN), he responded: 'PN is a coalition of political parties. It's different from this new platform.' The grouping announced by the former prime minister yesterday goes beyond existing political parties, he added. Earlier today, Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said Mahathir's new platform is nothing more than part of a repeated cycle of failed political experiments. He said Malay politics cannot be built on nostalgic rhetoric and repeated attempts to form new, loosely structured coalitions without a clear struggle or foundation. Besides Tuan Ibrahim, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin and Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin were also present at Mahathir's announcement for the new grouping yesterday. Mahathir said the formation of the new Malay alliance is aimed at 'restoring Malay power' in government. He said the coalition, which includes PAS and Bersatu, is not a formal political party for now but serves as an umbrella platform to protect the political and economic future of the Malay community. He also invited individual Umno members to join the coalition — but not the party as a whole. This marks Mahathir's latest effort to unite the Malays through a political platform, following previous initiatives such as Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) and Pejuang, ahead of the 15th general election (GE15). However, all candidates linked to GTA were defeated in GE15, including Mahathir himself, who lost his deposit and failed to retain his Langkawi seat. GTA, launched in 2022, was effectively dissolved a year later when Mahathir, its chairman, admitted the movement was not effective at gaining voter support.

Annuar Musa urges PN to support GRS in Sabah polls
Published on: Sunday, May 11, 2025 Published on: Sun, May 11, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional should support Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming Sabah polls since Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional have already announced their own alliance, says a PAS leader. PAS deputy election director Annuar Musa claimed that the PH-BN alliance was an indication that the federal government coalition aims to dominate Sabah's political landscape. Annuar, a former Umno secretary-general, also said the now-defunct Muafakat Nasional pact between Umno and PAS had believed that the local coalitions in Sabah and Sarawak should be supported rather than competed with. 'I hope that PN will consider supporting GRS. In fact, if necessary, we could study the option of contesting under the GRS banner or even stay out of the state elections. After all, GRS used to be part of PN as well,' he said in a Facebook post, adding that this was his personal view. Tuan Ibrahim says no 'moon' over Sabah Separately, Malaysiakini quoted PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man as saying it was likely that the Islamic party would not be using its iconic 'moon' emblem in the Sabah polls. He said PAS would likely use the emblem of whichever party it teams up with. Tuan Ibrahim also mooted a grand coalition involving PN and local parties, such as GRS and Warisan, to take on BN-PH at the polls. Earlier, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the BN-PH alliance did not mean that the two coalitions did not want to work with local parties. On Friday, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor said the party was ready to contest in the elections on its own if PH and BN have finalised their decision to cooperate for the state polls. However, PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim expressed optimism today that PH, BN and GRS could agree on an election pact. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Annuar Musa urges PN to back GRS in Sabah polls
PAS deputy election director Annuar Musa, giving his personal view, said the PH-BN pact showed that the federal coalition intends to dominate Sabah politics. No ‘moon' in Sabah? PAS wants bigger tent against BN-Pakatan for state election, says Tuan Ibrahim
KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — PAS is likely to forgo its signature 'moon' logo once more in Sabah's upcoming state election, as the party explores forming a wider electoral pact to challenge the ruling coalition. PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man confirmed to Malaysiakini today that the party is looking to contest at least six seats and may campaign under a different logo. 'PAS has identified at least six seats to contest in the Sabah election, and maybe we will use the logo of any party in our pact,' he reportedly said. While PAS is part of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition alongside Bersatu and Gerakan, Tuan Ibrahim hinted at ambitions beyond PN, suggesting an alliance with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and even Warisan, in a bid to avoid fragmented contests against Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH). 'Umno (BN) has decided to work with Harapan, and in Sabah, we have Warisan, GRS, and PN. 'So I feel if we can create a grand coalition that would be better, and I see the need for this framework, for PN, GRS, and Warisan to create a pact to face Umno-Harapan,' he was quoted as saying. He noted PAS' 'good relationship' with GRS and said the party would also engage Bersatu to assess the feasibility of a united front. PAS, which has yet to win any seat in East Malaysia, faces cultural and political headwinds in Sabah, where religious pluralism is deeply valued. By using a more locally accepted party's logo, PAS hopes to appeal to a broader segment of voters. Tuan Ibrahim's proposal could hit a roadblock, however, due to tensions between Bersatu and GRS. Several GRS representatives defected from Bersatu in 2022 and later aligned with the ruling coalition. The fallout worsened after corruption allegations surfaced involving GRS assemblymen, prompting strong criticism from Bersatu leaders. The Sabah election is expected to be called later this year.
