Stay neutral, schools are told

Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: Tuaran Pakatan Harapan (PH) Youth called on schools to remain politically neutral and for student safety to be given the highest priority, in light of the recent 'Zara' case in Papar that drew nationwide attention. The wing said it took seriously the Education Minister's recent statement, 'Jangan ganggu guru kami' (Do not disturb our teachers), which came in response to the case involving a student. Media reports stated that the Education Ministry had temporarily reassigned the school staff involved to the State Education Department pending investigation. While describing this as an appropriate interim measure, Tuaran PH Youth said it must be accompanied by comprehensive reforms to prevent similar incidents. Its proposals include eliminating the culture of bullying, upgrading school facilities for student safety and welfare, appointing trained wardens or guards from outside the teaching staff, strengthening security systems and complaint channels and introducing humanitarian programmes to foster mutual respect in the school community. The group also emphasised the importance of protecting the role of teachers as educators who shape future generations. They are urging the Government to consider its recommendations in line with the inclusive aspirations of the Unity Government to ensure schools remain safe, fair and conducive for all students regardless of background. The statement was jointly issued by Pemuda Amanah Sabah Deputy Secretary Esham Tarmizi, Tuaran AMK Chief and AMK Sabah Communications Director Arief Hambali J Indan and Tuaran Upko Youth Chief cum Upko Malaysia Youth Exco Rayner Ebi. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
