Sumi Naga community celebrates Tuluni festival in Tinsukia village
Dibrugarh: Historic Longtong Sema village in Tinsukia district came alive with vibrant colours, traditional music, and cultural fervour as the Sumi Naga community celebrated the annual Tuluni festival on Tuesday.
Organised by the All Assam Sema Naga Council, the festival — rooted in agriculture and communal harmony — drew hundreds of attendees, including dignitaries, scholars, and locals from neighbouring villages.
Tuluni, also known as Anni, marks the season of abundance and is the most significant traditional festival of the Sumi Naga people. Celebrated annually on the same date, it signifies gratitude for new crops, joy, and the strengthening of social bonds.
The festival traditionally includes feasts, folk rituals, and prayers for a bountiful harvest, as well as reconciliation among community members.
The celebrations took place in Longtong Sema village, a cultural stronghold established in 1904. The village, which once hosted former President APJ Abdul Kalam in 2003, remains a beacon of Sumi Naga heritage.
"This festival is a reaffirmation of our identity, our connection to the land, and our unity as a people. Tuluni embodies the spirit of the Sumi Naga — our faith, brotherhood, and deep-rooted agricultural traditions," said G Kanato Chophy, assistant professor of anthropology at Dibrugarh University, who attended the event.
