Tumi Morake to headline JiVE Cape Town Funny Festival

The festival will be held in Cape Town later in June. Award-winning comedian Tumi Morake is set to headline the 26th edition of the JiVE Cape Town Funny Festival. The festival will be held at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town from 17 to 29 June. Speaking to The Citizen, Morake, who is based in Atlanta, USA, said she is looking forward to reconnecting with audiences. 'It feels like going back to my favourite uncle's house after a long time! 'I am looking forward to one of the best audiences in this country and having a good time,' she said. 'It's a mixed bag of goodies that gives everyone a chance to shine. You perform for audience sizes you don't normally get to, so you sharpen your skills. 'Also, it is a great platform to get your name out there and share a stage with international acts.' The 26th edition of the JiVE Cape Town Funny Festival features a line-up of both international and local stars, including Robby Collins, Kagiso Mokgadi, Charlie Caper, Baccalà Clown Emo, and Loukmaan and Friends. Morake is one of the leading names in South African comedy. She has won several awards, including the Savanna Comics' Choice Award, and has been named a Free State Icon. In 2018, she made history as the first African woman to appear in a Netflix comedy special, Just For Laughs Festival, which was streamed globally the following year. After spending the past few years in the United States, she says the experience has sharpened her comedy without changing its core. 'Living in the US has taught me the value of cultural context and research — understanding Ebonics and references makes a big difference. 'It has also taught me to appreciate how well-versed we are in American politics. But the more true I am to my South African roots, the more audiences lean in.' Morake said she enjoys performing at home, particularly because of South Africa's rich linguistic diversity. 'Switching language lanes is the thing I miss most when I'm away. In one South African set, you can go through half the country's official languages!' NOW READ: 'It cannot carry on as things have been' – Gayton McKenzie as he cuts funding for Downtown Music Hub

Helen Zille says she wouldn't have done Showmax Roast if her mother was still alive

Zille faced a panel of comedians, musicians, and politicians, including Tumi Morake, Trevor Gumbi, Loyiso Gola and Patricia de Lille. 'I think they're all interesting,' Zille said. 'They've all made a mark in our society, they're good at what they do, and they're provocative. They can give a jab and take a jab, so they'll be good sparring partners.' She said she had no clue about The Real Housewives — Mel Viljoen and Londie London. 'I don't know if they're from Desperate Housewives or The Real Housewives. I know nothing about that world, so that'll be new for me. But the rest I know, and I think they'll handle this kind of exchange well.' She explained that when she told her sons she was doing the Roast they were shocked. 'When I told my sons, they said, 'Ma, do you even know what a Roast is?' And I had to admit, 'No, I don't. What is it?' 'They were like, 'Ma, are you crazy? You're putting yourself out there for a toasting! You're going to be chewed up.' I said, 'That's fine. I get chewed up every day.' 'Then they sent me a few Roasts to watch, and honestly I couldn't even understand them. I didn't know what was funny about them! I thought, 'I can never be like this — I don't even get the jokes.' But eventually they said, 'Well, Ma, if you want to do mad things, go ahead.'' As a seasoned politician, Zille said she's no stranger to being roasted in her daily life and isn't fazed by it. 'So much has happened in my life. I've been battered from every angle, cancelled countless times. If you look at my social media timeline, people are constantly being rude and carrying on. It just doesn't bother me any more.' TimesLIVE

Happy Mother's Day! Local celeb moms share what motherhood means to them

Mother's Day is about celebrating the many incredible women who embody the spirit of motherhood. Ahead of this special day, we reached out to some famous moms to find out what makes motherhood meaningful to them. ZOË BROWN 'Being a mom is such a privilege. I have friends who are struggling to start and expand their families. Now that I have my sons, it was worth the wait because I am enjoying every moment. It's definitely not easy with two little ones, but it helps to have the extra hands. I look forward to every milestone with them.' 'The best part is really the little things. From Luke's first smile to Jordan's sassy attitude. I wish people had warned me about all the happy tears I would shed! But also, it's beautiful to know I'm responsible for raising two good men in the world – the world needs more good men.' TUMI MORAKE 'Being a mother means that three souls chose me as their entry point to the world, and chose me to begin their journey with them. My children have taught me invaluable lessons about meeting the most patient, loving and giving side of myself. This has all meant I have a great responsibility to take care of myself so I can show up for them. 'The best part has been the laughs! Oh, my children crack me up effortlessly. It's also the genius and talent flex on my side. To know that I have been a part of raising some pretty smart and talented people.' KHANYI MBAU 'Being a mother means being a guide, guardian and a sounding board for the soul [my daughter Khanz] that was assigned to me. And the best part of motherhood is that it's made me accountable and intentional with everything I do.' Being a first-time mom, motherhood has been an incredible journey. It's the smiles you get back, the tight cuddles and the little giggles that I get from my boy that make it even more special and the best thing ever!' SIMPHIWE NGEMA 'Motherhood is my everything right now. To me it means unconditional love, being patient and showing up for my kids every day – doesn't matter whether I'm tired, moody or angry – I still have to show up. It also means becoming the best version of myself so that they have someone to look at.' 'My boys are so affectionate, they look at me like I'm their world and for me, it makes everything worth it. 'My firstborn, Tiyani (4), is so considerate – he gives me kisses and hugs when I need them the most. He will compliment me and say, 'You look so pretty, Mommy', or 'I love your dress'. At school, they will report how well-mannered he is. So it makes the late nights and motherhood all worth it.'
