Diary: Tumi Morake at the Cape Town Funny Festival, Disney+ Quiz Nights return, Joya Mooi releases Open Hearts
Tumi Morake brings the laughs to Cape Town
South African comedic powerhouse Tumi Morake is back to light up the stage at the 26th edition of the JiVE Cape Town Funny Festival, powered by KLM.
Performing exclusively at the Baxter Theatre from 17 to 29 June, Morake returns from her home in Atlanta in the US to reconnect with her roots — and her fans.
Known as the 'First Lady of Comedy', Morake made history in 2018 as the first African woman featured at Netflix's Just For Laughs festival, and her international résumé ranges from Ghana to the UK and across the US.
Local audiences will know her from films like Seriously Single and the hit soap The Queen.
Morake is buzzing about her return: 'This is the biggest, most diverse audience you will ever find in South Africa!' Festival founder Eddy Cassar calls her 'bold, sassy' and central to the event's spirit.
Tickets are R250 via Webtickets, with group discounts available.
Even more magic at this year's quiz nights
Get ready for a trivia takeover as Disney+ Quiz Nights return this month, in collaboration with Quiz Nights SA. After the huge success of last year's edition, this event promises to be even better, running from 12 to 15 May at venues across Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
It celebrates everything from Disney classics to fresh new content on Disney+, including hits from Pixar, Marvel and National Geographic.
Whether you're a die-hard fan of Grey's Anatomy or The Simpsons, or obsessed with newcomers like The Bear, Dying for Sex or Daredevil: Born Again, you'll get your moment.
Christine Service of The Walt Disney Company Africa says the quiz captures 'shared moments that connect generations'. Entry is free but fans are urged to book their spots fast at venues like Tiger's Milk, Kapstadt, Carlyle's and more. Follow @QuizNightsSA and @DisneyPlusZA for details.
Kesivan & The Lights bring Freedom in Sound to life
Electrifying: Kesivan Naidoo and his group will give several performances in Joburg and Cape Town.
Celebrated drummer and composer Kesivan Naidoo is back in South Africa along with his dynamic ensemble, Kesivan & The Lights, for the Freedom in Sound tour — a celebration of 30 years of democracy through jazz.
The group starts their Joburg leg at Untitled Basement on Thursday 8 May, followed by a performance at the Wits Chris Seabrooke Music Hall on Friday 9 May, before heading to Cape Town's Baxter Theatre for a one-night-only show on Saturday 10 May. That evening will also be recorded for an album.
The tour brings together some of jazz's finest talents: trumpeter Darren English, pianist Bokani Dyer, saxophonist Charley Rose, guitarist Fabio Gouvêa and bassist Joan Codina, blending heritage with innovation.
Naidoo says the project honours South African jazz masters while reimagining their legacy.
Tickets range from R200 to R250 via Webtickets.

Kaya FM suspends Sold Phenduka pending an internal investigation
Before joining Kaya, Sol Phenduka had branched out into podcasting after being suspended by 5FM in 2015 for offensive comments. Kaya FM has suspended broadcaster Sol Phenduka with immediate effect. 'Kaya 959 confirms that presenter Sol Phenduka has been placed on suspension with immediate effect. This step has been taken pending the outcome of an internal process currently underway,' read a statement shared with The Citizen by Ian Bredenkamp, who handles PR for the station. When asked about the reason behind the suspension and its duration, Bredenkamp said they would release a follow-up statement 'once the internal process is concluded'. 'The station is committed to following due process, and no further details will be shared at this stage.' Sol Phenduka, whose real name is Solomzi Thandubuntu Phenduka, co-hosts the station's breakfast show Siz the World with Sizwe Dhlomo alongside sportscaster Mpho Maboi and newsreader Mfundo Mabalane. Sol Phenduka's manager hadn't responded to The Citizen's requests for an interview at the time of publishing. Before joining Kaya, the former Big Brother contestant had branched out into podcasting after being suspended by 5FM in 2015. His suspension on the national radio station came after he made offensive comments. The offensive comments he made were about the murders of the Van Breda family in Stellenbosch. The surviving member of the Van Breda family was then 16-year-old Marli van Breda. 'Sol referred to her survival as 'fresh' because she was the only person who can identify her killer,' read 5FM's statement at the time. 'His comments, which included him saying she was 'gorgeous' and that he would 'like to axe her out', but that he 'wouldn't X her', have been seen as insensitive, with social media accusing him of making jokes far too soon after such a tragic event.' The Van Breda family were victims of an axe attack. NOW READ: 'I just got fired from Kaya FM' – Dineo Ranaka

It is being built through choices, tools and leadership that reflect a rapidly evolving reality,' said Mic Mann, Co-CEO of Singularity South Africa. 'This year's summit puts those ideas on stage and brings together people who are asking better questions and creating practical solutions.' 'AI is no longer confined to labs or code,' added Shayne Mann, Co-CEO. 'It is in the systems we build, the stories we tell and the tools we use. The summit is a platform for people who are doing the work to ensure technology serves a broader purpose, shaped by many voices.' A platform for transformation The Singularity South Africa Summit 2025 continues to position itself as a key meeting point for leaders across business, technology, policy and education. The inclusion of strong female voices in AI, alongside the rise of robotics and automation, reflects the broader commitment to relevance, inclusion and action. 'We keep saying women belong in technology, but belonging is not the point. Do not invite us in because we are women. Expect us because we lead, build, design and create. Expect us to rebuild broken systems, not accept them, because change is central to innovation and growth. That is why Singularity matters to Old Mutual. It is not just a sponsorship. It is a bold statement that we are investing in platforms that challenge the status quo, amplify diverse voices and drive real transformation. We are not here to observe the future. We are here to help shape it,' said Celiwe Ross, Director: Strategy, Sustainability, People and Public Affairs at Old Mutual. The 2025 summit will feature keynote sessions, immersive workshops, a curated expo and structured networking opportunities. Delegates can also engage with the event virtually through UBU's metaverse platform. For updates and registration, visit

Bombshells and husband drama with Makoto Phumodi of ‘Married At First Sight SA'
The conversation around sex between you and your husband sparked a major debate online. Is intimacy a deal breaker for you in a relationship? Intimacy is important to me. If we can't connect emotionally, it won't work. My husband didn't believe in foreplay or kissing when we first met so those are the things we had to learn about each other and overcome. Tshepo Miya has made a few comments about you. What's the story behind the tension between you? My husband confided in Miya a lot. Our argument happened off camera when Miya said I shouldn't ask my husband about his whereabouts, ' Monna ha a botswe o tswa kae .' He was basically saying my husband can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and I shouldn't ask anything. When I reacted to the comment, he called me disrespectful. If you could design your ideal husband, what qualities would he have? My ideal husband is someone who's going to take the time to know and understand the type of person I am, embracing every scar and helping me grow. What's your relationship like with the other cast members? Besides my husband, Palesa Mphaki is my girl. We've built a beautiful relationship outside the show. We talk on the phone almost every day. Portia Baloyi and I chat here and there, and as for Nelisa Ntabeni, I don't have a relationship with her. How does it feel to watch your own journey unfold on screen? It's amazing. I'm not shocked by anything. People think I'm acting, but little do they know, I react like that in my everyday life. Why should people keep watching your journey on Married at First Sight South Africa ? There's so much drama coming. People love drama and this show is packed with it. I would say it is one of the best reality shows and they do not want to miss out.
