Tun Ramli defies age with unstoppable energy at 84

GEORGE TOWN: At 84, many would choose to slow down, but Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib defies this norm, proving that age is truly just a number. Instead of retreating into a life of leisure, he remains an active, energetic, and forward-thinking figure, continuing to serve the people with the same zeal that has defined his career. In an exclusive interview with Bernama, Tun Ramli shared the secrets behind his vitality, even after stepping away from politics more than two decades ago. His formula? A blend of passion, discipline, and a love for adventure that has kept him physically fit and mentally sharp. After retiring from politics in 2008, Tun Ramli's life didn't slow down. He embraced his newfound freedom as an opportunity to explore new horizons. "I didn't fall into a lull after leaving politics. Instead, I turned to writing, and now I've authored four books," he shared with Bernama's editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj and Penang Bureau chief R. Ratcharathan at Seri Mutiara here recently. Writing, however, was just the beginning. His lifelong passions-mountain climbing and cycling-soon became his next adventures. Over the years, he has conquered several peaks, including Gunung Tahan in Pahang, Lenawee Mountain in Colorado, and mountains in Oman, Bhutan and Indonesia. Tun Ramli's legacy extends beyond politics. His written works include Pasir Salak: Sehamparan Sejarah Perjuangan, Meniti Zaman, Bangsa Melayu: Penjejak Benua and Tuan Yang di-Pertua: Daripada Seorang Budak Kampung Sehingga Menjadi Peneraju Parlimen. He's also contributed articles to Majalah Commonwealth and created travel brochures and dioramas for the Pasir Salak Historical Complex in Perak. Tun Ramli credits his longevity to a balanced routine that includes both mental and physical activities. "While I may not be as physically strong as I once was, staying active both mentally and physically keeps me youthful," he said. He regularly cycles around Penang, enjoying the island's beauty, while encouraging the younger generation to find balance in their own lives. "Work hard, but don't forget to live. Maintain both body and mind; if one falters, the other will too," he advised. Beyond his public life, Tun Ramli is a devoted family man. A proud grandfather of seven, he treasures every moment with his grandchildren. "In family matters, I'm all in. I'm close to my grandchildren, and I love spending time with them," he shared. His strong family values emphasise the importance of love and connection, despite his high-profile career. Married to Toh Puan Raja Noora Ashikin since 1973, Tun Ramli finds fulfilment in his family life, which has always been a source of joy and strength. – Bernama

Respect for monarchy key to nation-building, says Penang governor

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib today said that respect for the institution of the Constitutional Monarchy is a vital foundation in nation-building and ensuring the stability of the nation-state system. He said the monarchy institution was not just a historical legacy, but part of the governance structure that guaranteed a balance between power, responsibility and the rights of the people. 'This principle has been enshrined in one of the five principles of Rukun Negara, which should be understood, appreciated and preserved with a full sense of responsibility. 'In this country, the monarchy institution is not only a symbol of sovereignty, but also serves as a guardian of the supremacy of the constitution, a preserver of traditional values and a unifier of the people in a noble spirit of patriotism,' he said in his address at the investiture of the state awards, medals and honours in conjunction with his 84th birthday celebration at Dewan Seri Pinang, here today. Therefore, Tun Ramli also called on the people of Penang to always express this respect through a sincere attitude, understanding and appreciation because the institution of the state, which is founded on the principle of a Constitutional Monarchy, will remain intact as long as the people hold fast to the same foundation. Meanwhile, Tun Ramli said the upcoming National Month should be a platform to strengthen the spirit of independence and foster a deep love for the country. He said that apart from being a historical heritage, independence is also a shared responsibility of every citizen of the country to preserve peace, appreciate the blessings of freedom and defend the progress that has been achieved. In his address, the Governor also congratulated the state government on its success in recording a gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 4.8 per cent last year, which brought the state's GDP to RM121.5 billion. 'Indeed, the state government has proven that systematic, focused and progressive administration is one of the main keys to ensuring sustainable economic stability,' he said. Earlier, the Governor's birthday celebration began with a 17-gun salute, inspection of the parade and guard of honour, followed by the investiture of the state awards, medals and honours. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, who received the State Commander-in-Chief (DPPN), which carries the title of Datuk Seri, topped the list of 280 recipients. This year, 150 individuals will receive the Order of Merit while 1,380 people will receive the medals and honours at the ceremony, which to be over four days starting today, and on July 28, 29 and 30. - Bernama

Tun Ramli pledges to engage directly with the people of Penang, not just as a state symbol

GEORGE TOWN, 25 Julai -- Yang Dipertua Negeri Pulau Pinang Tun Ramli Ngah Talib ketika ditemu bual eksklusif bersama Bernama di Seri Mutiara baru-baru ini. -- fotoBERNAMA (2025) HAK CIPTA TERPELIHARA GEORGE TOWN: The Governor of Penang, His Excellency Tun Ramli Ngah Talib (pic) , has pledged his commitment to engaging directly with the people, in line with his role as a symbol of unity and a bridge between leaders and communities. Although no longer active in frontline politics, Tun Ramli believes effective leadership continues to depend on a leader's ability to understand the realities of people's lives and to truly listen to their concerns. Armed with 17 years of experience as Perak Menteri Besar from 1982 to 1999, Tun Ramli said he hopes to bring a people-first approach to his role as the ninth Governor of Penang, following his official swearing-in on May 1. "As Governor, I, too, must go down to the ground and meet the people as much as I can. If we are not familiar with or close to them, they won't open up, they'll keep things to themselves. That's not healthy and shouldn't happen. "In my view, it's important to understand the people's 'tastes', not just in terms of food but in terms of customs and practices. If I am here in Penang, I must understand their feelings. That's how, little by little, I become one with the people of Penang,' he shared in a recent exclusive interview with Bernama, conducted by editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj and Penang Bureau chief R. Ratcharathan at Seri Mutiara here. Drawing from his extensive experience in public administration, Tun Ramli emphasised that all leaders must embrace the principle of 'going to the ground' to better grasp the needs and challenges faced by the people at the grassroots, and to help address them within their capacity. While the Governor's roles and responsibilities are outlined in the Penang State Constitution, Tun Ramli believes that the Governor's Office should also function as an informed part of government. "When the state assembly is in session, the Governor is essentially working too. When the state executive council convenes, the Governor is also involved in principle. The Governor has the right to know what is happening and to advise on issues that should be addressed,' he said. Tun Ramli stressed that he does not wish to be a mere figurehead, but a unifying voice and a conduit between the people and their leaders. Reflecting on his appointment, the Governor revealed that his name had been mentioned before, including four years ago, but no official approach was made at the time. While he was aware of recent speculation, he kept his expectations modest until the formal appointment. On April 24, Tun Ramli received his letter of appointment from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, at a ceremony at Istana Negara, making him Penang's ninth Governor effective May 1, 2025. He succeeded Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, who had served since May 1, 2021. Tun Ramli is the fourth individual appointed as Penang Governor who is not originally from the state. He was elected as the state assemblyman for Kampung Gajah in 1978 and made it to the Perak state executive council before becoming Perak's eighth Mentri Besar. He served for over 17 years until 1999, making him one of the longest-serving Menteri Besar in the country. Later, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Pasir Salak and went on to chair the Public Accounts Committee. From 2004 to 2008, he served as the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat.- Bernama
