Taiwan expands its annual military drills
TaipeicTypeface:> Taiwan plans to launch its largest annual military drills, the Han Kuang exercise, designed to test the island's defence capabilities in the event of a Chinese attack, Major General Tung Chi-hsing told a news conference on Tuesday.
The exercise, set to being on July 9, will feature urban resilience drills for the first time and is expected to last 10 days - twice as long as in previous years - the defence ministry said.
The drills will focus on gray-zone provocations, emergency operations and full-scale scenarios, the major general said.
Held annually since 1984, the exercise traditionally features joint anti-landing operations, coastal combat training and layered defence strategies.
The national police authority on Tuesday urged the public to download an app for timely instructions during the air defence drill.
In a Tuesday video, President Lai Ching-te emphasized defence resilience as a collective responsibility, asserting national defence involves all citizens. They are not mere bystanders but an integral part of national defence he said. (DPA)
