Tourism: Tunisia 'still far from pre-crisis levels,' says Amel Jaiet
Amal Jaiet, a member of the executive board of the Tunisian Federation of Tourism Professionals, confirmed that the figures provided by the Ministry of Tourism regarding the sector's recent performance are official, transparent, and free from any suspicion.
Speaking on Express FM, Jaiet explained that 'the loss of around 80,000 beds represents a real crisis for the sector and raises serious questions about whether the current figures truly reflect the reality of tourism in Tunisia.'
Regarding tourist flows from neighboring countries, she noted that they have been a key driver of the sector since 2015. However, she stressed the need to further develop this type of tourism, particularly by improving services in border regions and better meeting the expectations of Algerian tourists. She pointed out that tourist behavior has changed and become more demanding.
Concerning European tourists, Jaiet emphasized that Tunisia is still far from pre-crisis levels, lamenting the lack of real progress in implementing solutions despite the country's significant tourism potential.
Jaiet highlighted that tourism is not just about hotel stays, calling on all stakeholders to take responsibility.
She noted that Tunisia faces a spiral of challenges, including lengthy procedures, airport-related issues, and outdated laws, problems that have persisted for over 15 years.
She concluded with a clear call to launch a 'true tourism revolution' in Tunisia by strengthening public-private cooperation, encouraging investment, and working seriously to develop the tourism sector and enhance its competitiveness.
