‘Alarming' nurse crisis: Johor, MOH agree on urgent staffing for hospital upgrades

JOHOR BAHRU, July 16 — The Johor government and the Ministry of Health (MOH) have agreed on the urgent need to fill vacancies, improve facilities and upgrade infrastructure at three major hospitals to strengthen healthcare services and support frontline workers. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said these key matters were discussed during a meeting between the state delegation and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad in Putrajaya yesterday. The discussion focused on enhancing the operations of Johor's three main hospitals, Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Hospital Sultan Ismail and Hospital Kulai. 'Both parties also agreed that Hospital Pasir Gudang and Klinik Kesihatan Cendana must be further improved with additional manpower and equipment ahead of their expected opening early next year. 'To ensure smooth implementation, a special task force will be set up to coordinate and monitor short-, medium-, and long-term action plans,' he said in a statement posted on Facebook. He also expressed his appreciation to the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, for his continued concern for the welfare and well-being of Johoreans, particularly in the area of public healthcare. Onn Hafiz emphasised that the state government and MOH remain committed to upholding the people's right to fair, efficient and quality medical treatment, while also safeguarding the welfare of frontline workers who form the backbone of the healthcare system. Yesterday, Onn Hafiz revealed that Johor is facing a worsening healthcare manpower crisis, with some nurses reportedly managing between 10 and 14 patients per shift, far exceeding the ideal nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6, or a maximum of 1:8, especially at major hospitals. He described the situation as alarming, warning that it not only affects the morale of healthcare workers but also compromises the quality of care provided to patients. — Bernama

Hamidin believes Harimau Malaya can break into world's top 100 within next two or three years

Former Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin is optimistic that the national team can reach that milestone, given their recent progress under the Harimau Malaya revolution driven by the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail. Malaysia are now ranked No. 125 in the latest FIFA rankings, a six-spot jump from their previous position at No. 131, their highest in 19 years since they last reached the same ranking in February 2006. The improvement came after a convincing win over Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifying campaign last month under new head coach Peter Cklamovski. Hamidin believes the current set-up has the potential to take Malaysian football to greater heights, especially with strong backing from Tunku Mahkota Ismail. "After such a long time, to see Malaysia ranked No. 125 is a great achievement. It shows what can happen when everyone works together to push the national team forward,' said Hamidin. 'When I first took office, we were ranked 178 in the world. Slowly but surely, we climbed up the ladder and even reached No. 130 before the Asian Cup in Qatar. 'We must continue this momentum. Consistent progress requires consistent effort. If all parties work together and give their full support, I truly believe it's not impossible for us to break into the world's top 100 within the next two or three years. 'But the effort must be consistent, as other nations are also working hard to strengthen their teams. Long-term planning is crucial to ensure Harimau Malaya remain competitive on the international stage,' said Hamidin. Still, he warned that other nations are also making strong strides to improve their rankings. In South-East Asia, Thailand continue to lead the way at No. 102, followed by Vietnam at No. 113, Indonesia at No. 118, and Malaysia just behind. 'We all dream of achieving greater success than where we are now. That's why continuous effort is essential. With the initiatives introduced by Tunku Mahkota Ismail, I'm confident we're on the right track to keep moving forward. 'But we can't afford to be complacent. We must keep evolving and find better ways to improve the team's performance. Otherwise, we risk slipping backwards,' he said. Hamidin was speaking after receiving the Sports Leadership Figure award at the 2024 Malaysian Sportswriters Association (SAM)-100PLUS Awards in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

Photo: Facebook KUALA LUMPUR - National football legend Datuk Zainal Abidin Hassan is confident that the Harimau Malaya squad can rise to be ranked among the world's top 100 in a few years' time. Zainal, who is also the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) Competitions Committee deputy chairman, said the Harimau Malaya revolution sparked by Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail could improve the quality of the national squad. "Alhamdulillah, this is a proud achievement for the Malaysian footballing fraternity. We pray that the Harimau Malaya squad can continue to improve their world ranking. "What's important is that the football fraternity continues to provide proper support for the Harimau Malaya to progress because they have been lagging at the international level for so long,' he said. He told reporters this after the FAM and Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (Bank Islam) strategic cooperation signing ceremony, which was also attended by FAM honorary president Tan Sri Hamidin Mohamad Amin and Bank Islam Group chief business officer (retail banking) Mizan Masram. Yesterday, the Malaysian men's football team climbed up six spots to be ranked 125th in the world based on FIFA's latest ranking list, thus equalling their best position last achieved in February 2006. This notable rise was driven by two recent strong performances - a 1-1 draw with Cape Verde in a friendly in May and a convincing 4-0 win over Vietnam in last month's 2027 Asian Cup qualifying campaign. Among Southeast Asian nations, Thailand still lead the regional pack at 102nd in the world, followed by Vietnam (113th) and Indonesia (118th). Meanwhile, FAM Marketing and Sponsorship Committee deputy chairman CP Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri expressed appreciation for the commitment of Bank Islam, which has been with them since 2013. "The close cooperation that has been forged not only strengthens efforts to develop football in the country, but also inspires us to continue to strive harder in developing an inclusive and sustainable ecosystem,' he said. Mizan, meanwhile, is grateful that Bank Islam has been given the trust to directly contribute to the development of football in the country through the extension of the collaborative agreement for another two years. - BERNAMA

‘Fly the Malaysian flag higher': JDT eye Club World Cup spot, says Garcia

JOHOR BARU, July 2 — Johor Darul Ta'zim Football Club (JDT) have set their sights on continued success on the international stage, including in the AFC Champions League (ACL) Elite and Fifa Club World Cup, in line with the directive of JDT owner Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim. JDT Football Club chief executive officer Luis Garcia said the Regent of Johor's directive is the key impetus for the Southern Tigers to maintain their remarkable performance and soar higher in the Asian and world football arenas. 'His Royal Highness Tunku Mahkota Ismail, who is the Regent of Johor and owner of JDT Football Club, has commanded that the Southern Tigers maximise our potential and proudly fly the Johor and Malaysian flags higher on the international stage, both on and off the field,' he said in a statement uploaded on the club's official Facebook page today. He said JDT, as the only Malaysian representative in the ACL Elite since 2019, have played an important role in contributing the majority of the 'AFC Member Association' ranking points, thus opening up more opportunities for local clubs to participate in the Asian club tournament. 'To keep progressing, we must not only maintain our performance but aim even higher in the years to come, to further elevate Malaysian football by enabling more Malaysian clubs to qualify for Asian-level competitions,' he said. Garcia said the expansion of the Fifa Club World Cup format, which may see more Asian teams, not just limited to the ACL Elite champions, gives JDT an opportunity to eye a slot in the tournament through its Asian club ranking. 'JDT have set a target to consistently advance further in the ACL Elite to improve their Asian club ranking and be in a better position to represent Malaysia at the highest stage of world club football,' he said. Acknowledging the tough trek ahead, he stressed that such success requires high commitment and meticulous planning, given the highly competitive landscape of Asian football. 'Achieving this target is no easy task — the standard of football in Asia is very high. We cannot lose focus if JDT are to succeed in this major mission. 'The new players we have brought in for the 2025–26 season are aligned with this direction, and JDT's success in Asia will certainly also be a success for Malaysian football,' he said. — Bernama
