Tunku Mahkota Ismail
KUALA LUMPUR – The Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail has voiced his disappointment with certain groups in the local football scene who, he says, still fail to recognise Johor Darul Ta'zim's (JDT) achievements over the past decade.
In a post on his official Instagram account, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, who is also known as TMJ, slammed what he described as a backward mentality that rejects the modern and professional approach JDT has introduced over the last 12 years. Since its founding, JDT has established itself as a powerhouse in Malaysian football, with world-class facilities like the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium and the JDT Academy in Iskandar Puteri. - File photo
'We're being held back by foolish people who can't tell the difference. Twelve years of breaking records and making history on and off the field. Yet they still don't get it,' the JDT owner said.
He added that Malaysian football seems out of step with JDT's vision and standards and that the local football environment is not ready to embrace change fully.
'Malaysian football doesn't deserve JDT. They should go back to the 'local boy' mindset, where the Malaysia Cup is more important than the league and the AFC Cup is dismissed,' he said.
TMJ's remarks appear aimed at certain fans and stakeholders who continue to prioritise traditional achievements over systematic club development, including investments in infrastructure, management and youth development.
He also lamented the ongoing scepticism surrounding JDT despite the club's many accomplishments, including winning the 2015 AFC Cup — the only Malaysian team to have done so.
'We're way too fast and far ahead of them. Facts never lie,' he said.
Since its founding, JDT has established itself as a powerhouse in Malaysian football, with world-class facilities like the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium and the JDT Academy in Iskandar Puteri.
The academy plays a crucial role in developing young national talents.
TMJ expressed hope that the local football scene would eventually evolve to become more modern and professional, keeping pace with developments in global football. - AWANI

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - LaLiga - FC Barcelona v Real Madrid - Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, Barcelona, Spain - May 11, 2025 FC Barcelona's Raphinha celebrates scoring their fourth goal REUTERS/Albert Gea/File Photo (Reuters) -Barcelona winger Raphinha was named LaLiga Player of the Season on Friday, after the Brazilian played a major role in his side winning the domestic treble, with club teammate Lamine Yamal named Best Under-23 player. Raphinha contributed 34 goals and 25 assists in 57 club games across all competitions, with Barca winning the league title, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. The 28-year-old signed for Barcelona in 2022 from Leeds United and recently signed a contract extension keeping him at the Spanish club until 2028. Raphinha scored a late goal to put Barcelona ahead in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Inter Milan, only for the Italians to level in stoppage time and net an extra-time winner. That was Raphinha's 13th goal in 14 games of this season's competition. Yamal, still only 17, confirmed his status as one of the world's top talents after last season's breakthrough campaign, with the winger netting nine league goals along with five in the Champions League. Tennis-Sole searching: Alcaraz pays homage to Nadal's footprint at Roland Garros
Tennis - French Open - Roland Garros, Paris, France - June 6, 2025 Spain's Carlos Alcaraz and Italy's Lorenzo Musetti pose for a photograph before their semi final match REUTERS/Denis Balibouse PARIS (Reuters) -Carlos Alcaraz paused in a moment of quiet reverence before his French Open semi-final on Friday to take a picture of the permanent footprint tribute to his childhood idol and compatriot Rafael Nadal. The 21-year-old Spaniard, widely seen as Nadal's natural successor, pulled out his phone to capture the imprint honouring the 14-time Roland Garros champion and lingered in what appeared a moment of communion between tennis generations. Alcaraz faces Italian Lorenzo Musetti as he bids to take a step closer to a second title in Paris and follow the path set by his countryman. Installed on day one of this year's tournament as organisers paid tribute to the recently retired "King of Clay", Nadal's footprint has rapidly transformed into something of a shrine at the spiritual home of claycourt tennis. Italian Jasmine Paolini touched it before one of her matches last week, while Alcaraz's coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero - himself a former Roland Garros champion - posed for a photograph in front of the footprint.
