Johor launches statewide campaign against bullying with special Friday sermons

JOHOR BARU: Bullying is strictly prohibited in Islam and will be the focus of the Friday sermon across mosques in Johor this week, as part of a sweeping campaign against the menace. State Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said the initiatives, carried out under his portfolio, were in line with the decree by the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, for an all-out anti-bullying push. The measures include an awareness campaign with the Kolej Universiti Islam Johor Sultan Ibrahim's student representative council, a statewide campaign across Johor's government religious schools and private Islamic institutions, and a special Friday sermon to highlight the dangers of bullying and its prohibition in Islam. "The main objective is to raise awareness among students, civil servants and the public about the devastating effects of bullying, which often lead to trauma, loss of dignity and emotional distress for victims," Fared said in a statement today. He added that the campaign also aimed to instil empathy among youths and the wider community to stamp out bullying at its roots. "Firm action must be taken against bullies. At the same time, awareness must be strengthened so that such incidents do not recur. "The safety and wellbeing of our children must always be protected," he said.

JDT targets global football glory under Tunku Mahkota Ismail's vision

JOHOR Darul Ta'zim (JDT) is determined to make its mark on the global football stage, with ambitions to excel in the AFC Champions League (ACL) Elite and FIFA Club World Cup. The club's vision aligns with the directive of its owner, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who has called for JDT to maximize its potential and proudly represent Malaysia internationally. Luis Garcia, JDT's chief executive officer, emphasized that the Regent of Johor's guidance serves as the driving force behind the club's pursuit of excellence. 'His Royal Highness Tunku Mahkota Ismail has commanded that we elevate our performance and proudly fly the Johor and Malaysian flags higher on the international stage,' Garcia stated in a club release. Since 2019, JDT has been Malaysia's sole representative in the ACL Elite, contributing significantly to the country's AFC ranking points. This success has opened doors for more local clubs to compete at the Asian level. 'To keep progressing, we must aim higher, ensuring more Malaysian clubs qualify for continental competitions,' Garcia added. With the FIFA Club World Cup expanding to include more Asian teams, JDT sees an opportunity to secure a spot through its strong Asian club ranking. 'Our goal is to consistently advance in the ACL Elite, improving our standing and positioning Malaysia on the world stage,' Garcia explained. However, he acknowledged the challenges ahead, noting the high competitiveness of Asian football. 'The standard is very high, and maintaining focus is crucial for success. Our new signings for the 2025-26 season reflect this ambition, and JDT's achievements will benefit Malaysian football as a whole.'

Singapore, Johor Regent agree to land swap at Holland Road [BTTV]

SINGAPORE: The Singapore government and the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, have agreed to undertake a land swap at Holland Road, here. In a joint statement, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) said Tunku Mahkota Ismail will transfer 13 hectares of his land in the area, closer to the Singapore Botanic Gardens Unesco World Heritage Site, to the Singapore government. In exchange, the Singapore government will transfer 8.5ha of state land to Tunku Mahkota Ismail. "The land parcels to be swapped are of comparable value," the joint statement stated. Tunku Mahkota Ismail currently owns 21.1ha of land at Holland Road, which has been under the private ownership of the Johor royal family for generations. The SLA and URA stated that Tunku Mahkota Ismail plans to develop his land. Both parties agreed to the swap so that the planned developments would be located further away from the Unesco World Heritage Site. "The Regent of Johor may develop his land after the swap, which is suitable for low-rise and low-density residential uses," the statement said. The SLA and URA added that any development plans will be subject to due process. "URA and agencies will assess development applications and ensure that the proposed development is sensitive to the surrounding site context," the statement said. Prior to the commencement of any works, the development will be subject to environmental studies to mitigate any potential impact on the environment. The Singapore government will keep the land which it will receive from Tunku Mahkota Ismail undeveloped for now. However, it is keeping its future plans for the area open.
