Parents arrested after their 1-year-old tests positive for fentanyl and THC

The parents of a 1-year-old child have been arrested after the child tested positive for fentanyl and THC in California, authorities said. The incident occurred on April 22 when deputies from the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) responded to a report of a medical emergency where a 1-year-old child had reportedly choked and temporarily stopped breathing at a residence near Dutch Mine Road in Jamestown, California, according to a statement from the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office. The child was revived on scene, police said, before being taken to a local hospital for evaluation, and later released to their parents. 'The following day, Wednesday, April 23, just before 4:00 in the afternoon, TCSO received a report from Child Welfare Services stating that the child had been brought back to the hospital for a second time on Tuesday by their parents—22-year-old Rory Kerr and 32-year-old Denaun Davis—after becoming unresponsive,' authorities said in their statement regarding the case. 'During this visit, the child was administered CPR, successfully resuscitated, and later transferred to an out-of-area hospital for treatment related to Fentanyl poisoning after testing presumptively positive for Fentanyl and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).' TCSO Detectives 'immediately launched an investigation,' authorities said, working on it through the evening into the early morning hours the next day before issuing multiple warrants for the parents of the child. 'Detectives executed the search warrant and located numerous items of drug use paraphernalia containing narcotics residue, along with a used Narcan, inside the motorhome where the family lived,' police said. During their investigation, officials discovered evidence that one of the child's parents had administered Narcan during the medical emergency, police said. Davis and Kerr were arrested and taken to the Dambacher Detention Center, where they were booked on felony child abuse charges, including abuse likely to cause great bodily injury or death. The child involved in this case has since been placed in protective custody. 'We want to remind the public that while Narcan (naloxone) is a critical and often life-saving tool in reversing the effects of opioid overdoses, including those caused by Fentanyl, it is not a substitute for proper medical care,' TCSO said. 'Narcan is temporary in nature and can wear off while dangerous levels of narcotics remain in the body. If you or someone else has been exposed to a suspected overdose, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention—even if Narcan appears to have worked. Being honest and forthcoming with emergency responders and healthcare professionals about potential drug exposure is critical to receiving appropriate and timely treatment.' 'We want to thank our community partners including Child Welfare Services and Adventist Health Sonora for their assistance and clear lines of communication which were critical to life-saving measures and a successful investigation,' police said.

Tuolumne County 1-year-old tests positive for fentanyl, parents arrested

JAMESTOWN — Two Tuolumne County parents are facing child abuse charges after their 1-year-old tested positive for fentanyl and THC after being resuscitated twice, authorities said Tuesday. Deputies responded on April 22 to a home on Dutch Mine Road in Jamestown after being alerted to a child who had choked and temporarily stopped breathing, the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office said. That child was revived at the home and was then evaluated at an area hospital before being released back to the parents — Rory Kerr, 22, and Denaun Davis, 32. The next day, the sheriff's office said it was notified by Child Welfare Services that the Kerr and Davis had taken their child to the hospital again after the child became unresponsive. Medical professionals used CPR to resuscitate the child, who then tested positive for fentanyl and THC, authorities said. The child was transferred to a facility for treatment related to fentanyl poisoning. A still image taken from a deputy's body camera during the search warrant Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office Following the second hospital visit, detectives with the Tuolumne sheriff's office began investigating what happened to the child. The day after the second hospitalization, the sheriff's office said detectives obtained and executed a search warrant for the family's motorhome. Inside the motorhome, detectives located drug-related items and residue as well as Narcan, which is used to treat opioid overdoses. The sheriff's office said facts were learned that at least one of Kerr and Davis had used Narcan during the child's second medical emergency. While law enforcement officials were searching the motorhome, detectives went to the facility where the child was being treated to arrest Davis and Kerr. The sheriff's office said all children in the family were placed into protective custody. Davis and Kerr were booked into the Dambacher Detention Center in Sonora and face felony charges of child abuse likely to cause great bodily injury or death.

Tuolumne County teacher arrested for throwing indoor baseball base at student, deputies say

TUOLUMNE COUNTY – A teacher was arrested in Tuolumne County Saturday afternoon after deputies said he threw an indoor baseball base at a student on Friday. The Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office said it began reviewing video surveillance at Curtis Creek Elementary School Saturday morning after a parent reported an assault took place at the school on Friday. Deputies said the video showed a teacher, who they identified as 60-year-old Phillip Hickey, throwing an indoor baseball base at a student's chest after the teacher was hit by a "small squishy toy" that the student threw. The student's parent then requested a citizen's arrest. Deputies said they arrested Hickey on charges of battery on school grounds and misdemeanor child abuse. Curtis Creek School District's website says Hickey is a seventh and eighth-grade English language arts teacher. The school is located east of Sonora and about 115 miles southeast of Sacramento.
