42 Things That'll Help You Avoid All Kinds Of Household Messes By Being Proactive

We hope you love our recommendations! Some may have been sent as samples, but all were independently selected by our editors. Just FYI, BuzzFeed and its publishing partners may collect a share of sales and/or other compensation from the links on this page. An air fryer is a blessing, as long as you have an easy-clean liner so you don't have to awkwardly rinse the basin out in the sink. 1. A sturdy Pikk-It tool with sharp metal teeth that'll un-ensnare tangled hair from your vacuum cleaner so the next time you have a major spill you won't just be pushing crumbs back and forth. It also works great on hairbrushes and even your beloved round brush dryer. Promising review: "Cleaned three items in less than five minutes. Vacuum brush head and two hair brushes that have three girls' long hair. I can't wait to get the whole vacuum and rug cleaner bristles cleaned. I had to write this review after testing it out. Design is strong, sturdy, and handles great. Highly recommended." — Rob Get it from Amazon for $8.99. 2. Affresh dishwasher tablets to get rid of residue that ends up creating odor and buildup on your dishes. Turns out, you don't need a new dishwasher or a second wash cycle, it just needs a proper cleaning. Promising review:"My $5 investment saved me over $500. I was ready to replace my dishwasher due to super cloudy glasses, residue, and dishes just not getting clean. Then, I became aware that the water softener was no longer doing its job so I had the rental company replace it. Dishwasher performance improved somewhat. I decided to do two more loads before deciding to purchase a new one. Then I saw a product test review for Affresh. I was ordering some stuff from Amazon anyway so I added that to my order. When it came, I tossed one of the tablets into the bottom of the full machine per the instructions and ran the regular cycle. I did not expect the results I got! The glassware that I thought was permanently etched and ruined came out like new. Same with cutlery. The difference is unbelievable. I will use this faithfully every month, as recommended. I can even put it on my subscribe and save order so I will get a new pack every six months. I am amazed!" — Sheila Get them from Amazon for $8.49. 3. A set of reusable microfiber mop pads (that work with the Swiffer you already own) because WOW those disposable ones seem to disappear like magic in your home. No more running out in your time of need when there's cereal splattered all over the kitchen floor. Turbo Microfiber is a small biz. They can be used wet or dry and on basically every type of flooring and even drywall if you're so inclined. Since they can be thrown in the wash, one microfiber pad can replace up 100 single-use pads. Promising review: "Just used these for the first time with my Swiffer WetJet and I gotta say I am impressed! Went on easily and cleaned the floors easily! I always hated the one-time use pads and never felt like they got my floor clean. This review is NOT sponsored, I bought these with my own money because I'm sick of single-use products. Seriously, buy these now!!!" — AKGross Get a set of two from Amazon for $13.25. 4. A pack of stain-removing, nontoxic cleaning cups can clean out your Keurig's innards once your coffee starts tasting a bit funny. Or you can get proactive with it and do it BEFORE it reaches that point. Quick & Clean is a small biz. Promising review:"Bought this Keurig at the Goodwill. Five stars for the cleaner, 1 star for the nasty used coffee maker! You can see what came out!" — Amazon Customer Get a pack of six from Amazon for $9.95. 5. A set of two rechargeable emergency LED bulbs will function like regular ole light bulbs and then when a big storm hits and your power goes out, they'll stay lit for 3–4 hours, which is enough time to help you figure out what you're going to do next without tripping on something and hurting yourself. Promising review: "These little guys are so bright!! Got these on a whim after seeing it on a TikTok. These are super bright and charge when the light is turned on. These are worth the price." — Reid524 Get a two-pack from Amazon for $16.99+ (available in three colors and a four-pack). 6. A box of slow-cooker liners to make cleaning up after yourself (and delicious concoctions) criminally easy in case the reason you haven't been using this workhouse countertop appliance is because of the cleanup. Just toss the liner when you're finished! Amazon I adore my slow cooker but hate cleaning up after using it. So I use these handy lil' bags. Read my full review of Reynolds Kitchens Premium Slow Cooker Liners. Get a box of 20 from Amazon for $12.18 (also available in small size). 7. A Scrubbing Bubbles toilet cleaning stamp for an in-the-bowl solution that'll help keep things spic 'n' span for ya. Scrubbing Bubbles / Check out a TikTok of the Scrubbing Bubbles toilet cleaning stamp to see it in action! Promising review:"I was sooo skeptical and was confused about how they'd work but the gel solidifies and with every flush, suds wash through with the water and it really makes a fresh difference. Also the scent is light but really nice and fresh! I recommend these 100%! They're super interesting but they do the job." — Janet Get it from Amazon for $4.74. 8. A Beard King trimmings catcher that'll make cleaning the bathroom sink SO much easier if you can convince your currently bearded bae to actually use it. Good luck! Promising review:"My girlfriend bought this for me as a present. At first I was skeptical to use, but once I got my hands out it there was no going back. I use my Beard Bib anywhere two to four times a week and cannot live without it. Not only does this serve a big purpose in my trimming routine but now I no longer have to argue with my girlfriend about all the mess that I USED to create. Also, we ordered a beard oil recently and reached out to customer support about the different scents they offer, they were super helpful! Overall it has been an awesome experience and they've truly made me feel like a King!" — Timur Get it from Amazon for $12.99 + (available in five colors). 9. A laundry-detergent drip catcher can help salvage some of that precious goo, so you can go a tad bit longer in between shopping trips. It'll also help you keep track of that cup! Every drop of goo helps! Promising review:"These are just what I've been looking for. I've been cleaning up drippy soap and softener from my floor for years. Now, this product keeps things nice and tidy and clean. Plus… They were five dollars cheaper than other very similar products. They simply attached to the bottle and are sturdy." — Pete Get two from Amazon for $4.99. 10. A fridge door organizer to squeeze in some extra space for leftover sauce packets and other tiny food items you still wanna use. Don't let those extra ketchup packets from takeout go to waste or explode on a shelf underneath your meal-prepped Bentgo box! This comes in a pack of four with two pockets each so everyone can get one! And because they're clear, you'll be able to see what's inside so you can actually use it. Promising review:"I used the product to clear up space that was used for condiment packets, but they also worked out great to hold my mom's insulin pens so they don't get lost in the fridge." — GuVal Get four from Amazon for $9.99. 11. A "Magic Tap" automatic drink dispenser so kids can help themselves to some OJ without them trying to pull the whole container out of the fridge (which has def spelled disaster in the past). It's battery-operated and spillproof without shortening the life of milk! Check out a TikTok of the drink dispenser in action. Promising review: "It works great and the milk still stays fresh." — A Lovejoy Get it from Amazon for $17.49 (available in four colors and in multipacks). 12. A cereal dispenser because you sorta miss the similar cereal situation from your college dining hall (or maybe that's just me?) and when you leave cereal in the boxes they tend to topple over, make a mess, and end up stale before you finish a box. Check out a TikTok of the cereal dispenser in action. Promising review:"Great and handy product! My family uses this every morning at our breakfast bar! It keeps our cereal fresh and the caps for the containers prevent any messes from small children. Easy to empty and refill as needed." — Natalie Get it from Amazon for $39.71. 13. A protective cable covering for keeping all sorts of critters from chewing on your cords, from cats to squirrels. Promising review: "These wire protectors work amazingly! I got them to keep my cats from chewing on my wires, and they do the job perfectly. They are tough to cut, but that's actually a good thing, it means they're strong and hard to break into, just as they should be. If you need reliable protection for your cables, these are a great choice!" — Clayton "The Alex Tech cord protector easily wraps around wires. I even had it continue over a hard 1/2 inch plastic cord protector. I used this to protect my trailer harness from the nut thieving tree rats, my loving wife calls squirrels. They chewed the last harness off." — CB in FL Get it from Amazon for $8.99+ (available in a variety of sizes). 14. A fast-acting, refillable plug-in fly trap will cover up to 400 square feet of space to help lure in with a guiding light and ensnare those annoying little bugs that keep flying around you while you're then when you're just trying to enjoy your home-cooked meal. It works on fruit flies, moths, gnats, and regular flies. Check out a TikTok of the plug-in fly trap in action. Promising review:"I can't say enough wonderful things about these handy little bug catchers! They are simple to use, cheap to refill, and catch a ton of small bugs and flies. I have eight of them now, all around my house! It's a little gross how many tiny flying insects are around…but it makes me feel a lot better now that I have these!" — Chris H. Get a two-pack from Amazon for $14.62. 15. A Shark Tank -featured Click & Carry Grocery Bag Carrier that'll help you take way fewer trips from the car to the house. It allows you to hook on your bags (up to 80 pounds!) and *comfortably* rest the carrier on your shoulder so your groceries don't take a spill in the driveway. Again. Amazon, Click & Carry is a Shark Tank and QVC-featured small business that specializes in easy carry accessories. Promising review: "TikTok made me buy it. This is great when you have a few bags and a box — for example, if you balance the bags, you can throw it over your shoulder and walk inside and have two free hands to carry the box, which is great. Product seems well built, and is comfortable on your shoulder or hand because of the padding." — Hung Get it from Amazon for $13.99 (available in seven colors). 16. A toothpaste squeezer can also serve as a stand for your bathroom sink. It helps you squeeze out EVERY last little bit without making a total mess. Let's make sure we're REALLY out of toothpaste this time. My colleague Sally Elshorafa has and loves this: "I'm a person who likes an uncluttered bathroom countertop, and having this hold my toothpaste straight up as opposed to just laying it down frees up space and keeps it looking tidy. It also ensures no toothpaste ever goes to waste; I've noticed since using it that I go way longer between needing a new tube. I just really hate wasting product, but so many bottles and tubes make it impossible to get the last couple of tablespoons of stuff out. I can't stand this! With this squeezer, I literally get ALL the toothpaste out before I need a new tube, and it's soooo satisfying." Promising review: "No instructions come with it, but it is fairly obvious how it works. Bottom of the tube through the body slot into the turnkey slot, and turn the key enough to clamp the tube in place. Stands upright, making a very small footprint. Wind too tight, and you might pop the cap with toothpaste under pressure. Gonna try it with other tubed products, like tomato paste and bacitracin." — Stephanie L. Get a pack of two from Amazon for $7.50+ (available in a pack of red and white or navy and white). 17. A mini bag sealer so you don't have to lose three-quarters of a bag of Cheetos to your pantry because you sloppily closed it with a subpar chip clip. It heats up quickly to seal anything from cereal bags and chip bags to pet food bags so the contents stay fresh for longer. You'll also get a plastic storage case and hook for storing it! Promising review: "Love this little bag sealer. I have kids, so I constantly have open bags of chips that go stale because they are left open on the counter. With this, I can reseal them and keep them fresh. I also do it with my babies teething snacks so I can stop throwing them away. With them being $8 a piece I ended up ordering some for Christmas next year for stocking stuffers for family members. And it doesn't get extremely hot so I can trust my 10-year-old to do it as well :)" — Katrina Get it from Amazon for $9.74+ (available in five colors). 18. Fridge bin liners can absorb extra moisture in an effort to keep your produce fresher for longer. PLUS, they'll catch the brunt of messy spills and will be so much easier to clean than taking a drawer out of the fridge and awkwardly scrubbing it down in your sink (or the dishwasher you do NOT have). I've done that before and it's not great! Amazon, Promising review:"I often have issues with grapes and apples going bad quickly. However, when I stumbled upon these, I decided to give them a try. I have stored them in the fridge for a month now, and I am impressed with how fresh they keep the produce. When I need to change them, I will repurchase them." — Holly F Get a three-pack from Amazon for $9.49. 19. A pooper scooper might seem like a prank gift. But will go to TOWN on all those piles your dog leaves in your yard without you having to bend down. No more stepping in, well, you know. Amazon Promising review:"With three dogs, two small and one large, I find that scooping the yard is a never-ending job. But with the Arm & Hammer swivel bin and rake, there is no more bending to pick up the doggy droppings. I am able to easily use the rake to push the droppings into the bag covered bin. When I am done cleaning up the yard, I just simply remove the plastic bag from the scoop, tie it off, and dispose. I do spray the rake off with the hose sprayer and then clip the rake onto the scooper for easy storage. I really like this handy scooper. It makes a very icky job much easier to handle." — Kelly Eldred Get it from Amazon for $19.99. 20. A rectangular lazy Susan with 360-degree rotation begging for a place in your fridge to easily contain and organize taller condiments and goods. No more making your condiments take a tumble (and spill) just because you're reaching for the Cholula. Amazon Check out a TikTok of the rectangular lazy Susan in action. Promising review: "This lazy Susan works exactly how I'd hoped. We've moved our fresh fruits and veggies to the refrigerator door, and all our condiments are now on this turn table on a shelf. It's easier to find what I need, and I'm not wasting as much fresh food as I did when it was on the shelf!" — ANDY Get it from Amazon for $18.70. 21. A double step stool with a safety lock and a weight limit of 330 pounds so you can reach stuff in the tippy-top of your kitchen cabinets without climbing on the counter OR knocking everything off of a shelf. Promising review: "I recently moved into my first solo apartment and I knew I needed a step ladder to reach things because your girl is 5'2. This ladder is very sturdy, and I love that it folds up easily so I can hide it in my storage room. Would definitely recommend." — kmill Get it from Amazon for $29.49. 22. Plus, a flexible grabber that's made for people with limited mobility but can come in handy for everyone while trying to grab stuff that's JUST out of reach. Also, you can fold it for easier storage and its sensitive grip means you get a better feel of what you're grabbing. Amazon Promising review: "Bought the 2-pack. Wanted my mother to be able to reach rarely used items in the topmost cupboard without getting on a step stool if my sisters and I weren't available. I'm using the other one to pick up trash when out mudlarking. Sturdy and convenient that it folds up." — Kristen Get it from Amazon for $16.96. 23. A reviewer-beloved veggie chopper can make onion tears and food prep mess a thing of the past because it chops AND catches your chopped ingredients. No more losing onion bits in that space between your fridge and oven. Amazon Check out a TikTok of the veggie chopper in action. Promising review:"Makes life so much easier. I can't imagine chopping onions or bell peppers by hand anymore, and it does so much more. We used to have a Prepworks chopper, which was a similar idea, but you had to press so hard to chop and it broke after not too long. This one requires very little effort to cut through the food and it has a generous container." — Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $29.97. 24. A SnapPower GuideLight will optimize your regular old outlets instead of a night-light that you have to plug into an outlet that you always have to unplug to vacuum or do other tasks. And it'll light your path in the hall when you're carrying stuff but don't want to turn on the overhead lights. Amazon SnapPower is a small biz that specializes in unique and innovative lighting products. Promising review: "I ordered this after seeing it on TikTok. I'm very happy with this product!" — Miss. Harris "Game changer. When I get up, I don't want to wake everyone up with flipping on lights and all. These provide plenty of walking through the house light. Super easy installation, too." — Monica Martinez Get it from Amazon for $22.98 (available in three outlet styles and four colors). 25. And some rechargeable motion sensor under-cabinet lights you can place *just* where you want to illuminate things in places like your kitchen or bathroom. Now you can refill your water glass at 3 a.m. without spilling all over the kitchen floor. These have a built-in magnet that'll stick on most metals, or you can use the included adhesive tape to tape them onto an existing surface. Promising review: " These lights are so worth it. I have a closet with no light in it, and I installed these in maybe two minutes flat, and it has completely fixed my disdain for the previously dark and disorganized closet. If you think you need these, you probably do." — HD Get it from Amazon for $19.78+ (available in two sizes and in warm or white light). 26. Some vinyl picnic table and bench covers reviewers found extremely helpful for camping and park use, BUT will also help your OG picnic table in your yard look more presentable AND keep any grossness from it affecting your nice lunchtime picnic. Sorfey Store is a small biz. Promising review: "Love this cover! We got one of the wooden picnic tables from HD about six years ago and just wanted to squeeze out another season before replacing! Perfect fit!!" — K.A.S. Get it from Amazon for $16.99 (available in three sizes and 14 patterns). 27. A KitchenAid nonstick aluminized cookie *slider* sheet which is QUITE the so will all the cookies you're about to cook on it. One end is gently sloped to help scoot along those delish snickerdoodles post-oven and you can chow down instead of scrub said cookie sheet. Amazon I'm currently testing one of these and am OBSESSED. Get two from Amazon for $34.58. 28. A lidded charcuterie board to help you prep the perfect spread ahead of time and keep it in the fridge and/or covered before its great reveal. You can keep bugs and everything else off the food WHILE ensuring that if it takes a tumble, your meat and cheese feast will still be fine to eat instead of (tragically) on the kitchen floor. Amazon Promising review: "I bought these for a party and it was so easy to prep them and pop them into the fridge with the lid on. Same goes for storing leftovers afterward. It was also great to use for fresh fruit we cut up to enjoy all weekend. Looks lovely and is solid quality." — AmJam Get it from Amazon for $31.74. 29. A set of remote-controlled flameless candles to help establish an ~atmosphere~ without causing a fire hazard or wax everywhere from aggressive candle blowouts. They're incredibly convincing, though, so you might wanna tell guests before they worry about your dipping out of the living room with "lit" candles to grab the cookies baking in the oven. Promising review:"I bought one set and loved them so much I bought two more sets. They're the most realistic-looking fake candles I've bought so far. The 'flame' up close obviously doesn't look real but from afar with the flicker setting on, you almost can't tell these aren't real. They also put out a decent amount of light for being fake. Gives my living room a very cozy feel which is what I wanted. Remote works great as well." — suckerforcats Get a set of three from Amazon for $25.99 (available in six styles). 30. A convertible potty-training toilet seat with a built-in night-light so everyone in the fam can go comfortably. (Well, that is if you finally taught the cat how to use the toilet, too.) And when you don't need the smaller seat, you can take it off! The Home Depot Promising review: "I love this toilet seat! We bought it to help my son with potty training. It is very comfortable when in the adult position, and the light is a great touch at night." — deborahm Get it from The Home Depot for $58.61 (available in a round or elongated seat shape). 31. Some pee pad magnets to keep that pad *right* where it needs to be instead of slipping and sliding all over the floor and leaving pee and poop on the actual floor. Promising review: "We pad trained our Cavapoo and his pads are in our laundry room. He tends to lift his leg just a little toward the dryer, so having the pads now going up a little on the side of the dryer has eliminated that issue. They are very strong and super easy to use." — Kay K. Get a four-pack from Amazon for $14.99. 32. Some stove burner covers to help you catch the mess right away on gas stovetops. Or just cover up some chipped or sorry-looking stove tops. (I live in a rental with a white gas stove top that def has some unsightly chips on it, so I can relate!) Amazon Psst, as you can see above, this set also comes with a crumb catcher where your stovetop meets your countertop! Promising review:"I've been using the foil ones and while they do the job, they're not so nice to look at. I like that this is black so it matches the original color of the appliances, but more importantly I like that this has a larger surface area to catch the drips that the foil ones never could before. They're also trim to fit, so they get right up into each burner without leaving gaps where drips can burn where it's hardest to clean. Time will tell if they're as durable/reusable as they claim. If they are, then I'll try to trim two of the spares to fit the center large burner. Overall recommended." — Michael Get an 8-pack from Amazon for $10.99 (also available in silver). 33. A dishwasher magnet so everyone in the house is on the same page about whether it's OK to eat off a plate that's in the dishwasher. Even though you've tried to forget it, you'll always remember that waking nightmare of realizing your partner put a bunch of dirty dishes back in the kitchen cabinets and drawers. Amazon Promising review:"I got this because my mother has dementia and she kept putting away dirty dishes 🤦🏽‍♀️. And believe it or not she has actually been using it and it definitely has been working! So I highly suggest buying this for parents or someone you know who has a similar problem!" — Raquel Get it from Amazon for $6.64 (also available in six colors). Also check out a version that's completely silver without the red or green for $20.95. 34. A pack of adhesive cord bundlers you can stick on the back of your kitchen appliances to keep power cords orderly instead of tripping up you and causing you to spill a bowl full of unmixed chocolate chip cookie ingredients. Promising review: "My wife bought these for kitchen appliances after seeing a TikTok video. They work great and help things look neater!" — Josh&Shan Get a six-pack from Amazon for $12.99 35. A stackable can rack to help your pantry look like a grocery store of staples instead of going for a soupy tumble. Amazon, Made from heavy-gauge steel and can store up to 36 cans of various sizes. Promising review:"These units were easy to assemble. They felt sturdy. I love that they are made of metal and not cheap plastic. I'm considering buying two more, and going side by side and stocking up on can goods!" — Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $24.97. 36. A lid organizer with adjustable dividers that'll help you keep track of all the food storage container lids that actually fit the correct container. YouCopia is a woman-owned small business that specializes in home storage solutions. Promising review:"This product does exactly what it's supposed to and does it well. In under 15 minutes I took my nightmare lid drawer and turned it into a functional, convenient storage space. The dividers were simple to install and provided flexibility. Slowly but surely I am getting my tiny, chaotic kitchen under control, and this got me a huge leap closer." — S. Hawthorn Get it from Amazon for $16.99+ (available in three sizes and multipacks). 37. Waterproof cushion covers that'll help guard your new couch against your pups. Mess happens? Simply wash the covers! Lots of reviewers use them on outdoor furniture, too! Promising review: "Have a look at these cushion covers! They are great quality and look amazing. Best invention ever! I bought the taupe, but wish I'd chosen the beige instead. Not a deal breaker, so kept them. But these are waterproof and washable! I have dogs, so this sure helps to protect my new sofa!!" — Laurica Get them from Amazon for $19.99+ (available in six sizes/packs and 11 colors). 38. A self-sealing magnetic screen door to let dogs help themselves out or in the house — so you won't have to peel yourself up your hammock so your dog can go to the bathroom after you finally got nice and comfy with a horror book. Promising review: "I bought this so my puppies could traverse to/from their backyard pen keep flying insects out. It is AWESOME! The puppies figured out quickly that they could go through the screen — the screen snapped back into a closed state immediately after they got through the opening. If only all things in life could be solved this easily!" — Lynette S Quigley Get it from Amazon for $27.99. 39. A weather-resistant cedar pathway to roll out along garden beds or other paths where your family tends to tread, wear down the grass, and bring all kinds of dirt inside the house. Amazon Promising review: "I've just installed these wooden garden pathways along the side of my house. Everyone just loves them. They give the entrance to the backyard a tropical resort feel. I highly recommend them. Sturdy and durable as well." — Tom Sokolowski Get an 8-foot path from Amazon for $74.95. 40. Magnetic grill lights that I'm sure even Hank Hill hasn't heard of! Sunset? Not a problem. Now whip up those burgers without your uncooked patties taking a tumble to the patio! But really though, why isn't every grill equipped with these from the factory? Promising review:"This was a surprise for my husband. He loves them. The lights are nice and bright and make grilling those last few things that didn't get finished before dark hot. He's also used them early in the morning when he's setting the smoker up before dawn. He's happy and finding them very useful. He especially loves the magnet on bottom so he can hang them off of so many things while he's busy and he can use the flexibility to shine them where he needs them. Very awesome and easy to use." — Holly Gomez Get two from Amazon for $22.29. 41. A horizontal water bottle organizer to keep those too-tall and too-top-heavy water bottles *right* where you want them instead of in a (painful) avalanche. YouCopia is a woman-owned small business that specializes in home storage solutions. Promising review:" This item was perfect to organize my water bottles that were too tall for my cupboard. Love it." — Amazon Customer 42. A set of three reusable silicone air fryer liners because cleaning out an air fryer can be a total PAIN. Popping this liner out after you've whipped up and devoured digger will be MUCH easier. Promising review: "I bought these because I was tired of cleaning the whole air fryer container. These were bought on a whim for both mine and my boyfriend's parents, who each have an air fryer. They work great, keeping all greases and crumbs inside, and make it easier to clean. The only bad thing (and this may just be me) is the ridges/ripples on the bottom of the inside of the liner. When you try to wash it in the sink, don't put the stream of water right on those unless you want to take a small bath. Other than that, these are fantastic. My boyfriend also says that it seems to make everything crispier, and we love that." — Jordan Hixson Get a set of three from Amazon for $14.99. Reviews have been edited for length and/or clarity.
