Turkish Ambassador Highlights 'Deep', 'Strong' Ties with Egypt
Nada Mustafa The Turkish Embassy in Cairo organized an event on the occasion of World Breakfast Day, featuring a rich array of traditional Turkish breakfast flavors. During the event, Turkish Ambassador to Cairo, Salih Mutlu Şen, told Egyptian journalists that two Turkish ministers are expected to visit Egypt this month. The World Breakfast Day celebration, observed annually on the first Sunday of June, was held at the Turkish Embassy in Cairo and attended by a select group of Egyptian journalists and distinguished guests. In his remarks, Şen emphasized that breakfast is a cornerstone of Turkish culture, and Turkey places great importance on promoting tourism and culinary arts. He noted that events like Turkish Cuisine Week and World Breakfast Day are organized in response to Egyptians' passion for Turkish food. The breakfast featured staple Turkish items such as cheeses, olives, jams, cucumbers, tomatoes, baguette bread, as well as hearty components like sujuk (Turkish sausage), pastrami, eggs, butter, honey, cream, yogurt, börek, and simit. Fruits, cakes, and biscuits were served as dessert after the meal. The sujuk served at the event was specially brought from Eskişehir, Ambassador Şen's hometown and one of the best-known regions in Turkey for sujuk production. Moreover, Turkish Ambassador highlighted the cultural and social value of breakfast in Turkish households, where families often enjoy breakfast together at home, in cafés, or in public parks on weekends. He also provided an overview of the recent developments in Turkish-Egyptian relations, stressing the growing depth of bilateral ties grounded in mutual love, respect, friendship, and shared interests, especially in areas such as economy and security. Furthermore, Şen mentioned that the Chief of Staff of Egypt recently visited Turkey, where he held meetings with Turkey's Minister of National Defense, the Chief of the General Staff, and various defense industry organizations. He added that the Turkish frigate TCG Gökçeada also visited the Port of Alexandria from May 27 to 29, and its commander met with the Commander of the Egyptian Navy, Admiral Ashraf Atwa. Şen also noted that two Turkish ministers are expected to visit Egypt in June, adding that Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, visited Cairo on May 6 to attend the D-8 Tourism Ministers' Meeting and met with Egyptian Minister of Culture Dr. Ahmed Heno, marking the start of a new era in cultural cooperation. Moreover, Şen revealed that joint musical performances between the two countries are planned for this year. In this regard, he expressed admiration for Egypt's legendary singer Umm Kulthum and shared his vision for a concert celebrating her legacy. Given Egypt's declaration of 2025 as the 'Year of Umm Kulthum,' a concert featuring music by Umm Kulthum and Mohamed Abdel Wahab is scheduled to be held. Şen also congratulated Turkish-Egyptian gymnast Adem Asil, who won two gold medals in the individual all-around and rings events at the European Gymnastics Championships in Germany, describing his achievements as a source of shared pride for both nations. In addition, he spoke about his recent cordial meeting with Egypt's Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhi, expressing hope for an upcoming cooperation agreement between the two countries in the fields of youth and sports. On the economic front, Turkish ambassador discussed the advanced progress in restarting the Ro-Ro shipping line to boost trade cooperation between Turkey and Egypt, expressing eagerness for its resumption. He shared details of his meetings with representatives of Turkish company DeFacto, which has numerous stores in Egypt. Şen noted their confidence in Egypt's economic reform model and desire to expand their investments. Additionally, he highlighted his meeting with officials from Turkish company Penti Socks, which is investing in sock production in the 10th of Ramadan industrial zone. The company has reached the final phase of its investment, and Turkish investments in Egypt are expected to exceed $500 million this year. In conclusion, Şen announced a significant upcoming inauguration in the Suez Canal Economic Zone this month, to which he will invite key members of the press. He reaffirmed the importance of Turkish-Egyptian relations in promoting peace, stability, and development in the region, stating that both nations are making confident strides toward a promising future. Italian Report: Libya Becomes Strategic Platform for Turkish Ambitions
Turkey is taking advantage of Libya's ongoing turmoil to strengthen its position across the southern Mediterranean, according to a new report published by the Italian Institute for International Relations (IAI). The report describes how Ankara has steadily increased its presence in Libya, using the lack of political unity and security in the country to advance its long-term regional plans. Over the past few years, Turkish influence in Libya has grown through military, political, and economic channels. This approach reflects earlier strategic thinking from former Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, who placed Libya at the center of Turkey's regional ambitions. According to the IAI, the Libyan conflict has provided the Turkish government with an opening to reinforce its role in North Africa and secure its access to energy and maritime assets in the Mediterranean. The recent outbreak of violence in Tripoli, following the death of militia leader Abdulghani al-Kikli, gave Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbaiba stronger control over the capital. Several armed groups connected to the Ministry of Defense, including Brigade 444, Brigade 111, and the Joint Operations Force, tightened their grip. Many of these groups maintain strong links with Ankara. The report suggests that the removal of al-Kikli may have created a more favorable environment for Dbaiba and, by extension, for Turkey. At the same time, Turkey has adjusted its approach across Libya. While maintaining close ties with the government in Tripoli, Ankara has also opened channels in the east. Turkish representatives have visited Benghazi, and Ankara has invested in infrastructure and construction projects in areas controlled by the rival administration. The report also connects this strategy shift to the recent thaw in Turkish-Egyptian relations. Since the September 2024 meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, both sides have spoken of working together to calm tensions in Libya and support a unified government. However, Turkey's ongoing military cooperation with Dbaiba, particularly through a defense agreement granting Turkish forces access to Libyan airspace, ports, and territory, has raised concerns in Cairo. The IAI warns that other powers, especially Egypt and Russia, may push back against Turkey's moves. Both countries remain active in eastern Libya and continue to support their allies there. Russia retains a strong military presence despite the war in Ukraine, and Egypt is still seeking to protect its influence, even after resuming talks with Ankara. The report concludes that Libya is becoming a battleground not just for local rivals, but for broader competition involving Turkey, Russia, Egypt, and the European Union, especially over migration, oil, and control of key maritime routes. Turkey, Egypt Collaborate on Gaza Aid Initiative
By Ahmad El-Assasy Turkey is diligently preparing its humanitarian aid in the Egyptian city of El-Arish, anticipating the resumption of assistance entry into Gaza, highlighted during a recent visit by the Turkish Ambassador to Cairo, Salih Mutlu Şen. Ambassador Şen inspected preparations at Sheikh Zuweid Hospital and the El-Arish port, demonstrating Turkey's commitment to aiding Gaza's recovery and reconstruction. In a Ramadan iftar speech at the National Exhibition Hall in the Presidential Complex in Ankara, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that Turkey had mobilized all its resources to stop bloodshed and had sent approximately 100,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza. This announcement underlines Turkey's ongoing commitment to Gaza amidst recent conflicts. Ambassador Şen's visit to El-Arish, a key logistical base for aid efforts, included inspecting Turkish relief materials and meeting with port authorities and local hospital staff. The Sheikh Zuweid Hospital, located close to the Rafah border, plays a critical role in treating patients from Gaza, equipped with top-notch facilities for kidney dialysis among other services. Ambassador Şen distributed Eid gifts and expressed his wishes for a speedy recovery to the Egyptian patients undergoing treatment at the hospital's dialysis center. He emphasized the importance of kidney dialysis and transplantation, given his personal connections to kidney disease, thus supporting the Turkish Organ Transplant Foundation's close cooperation with Egypt. In discussions with Sheikh Zuweid Hospital's chief physician, the ambassador learned about the services provided to Gaza's patients and inspected a field hospital established by the Egyptian Army with financial contributions from Turkey, dedicated solely to Gaza's patients. Moreover, Ambassador Şen reviewed other medical and logistical supplies, including generators and ambulances, stored in regional warehouses ready to be dispatched to Gaza. He expressed gratitude to the North Sinai Governorate, the Egyptian Red Crescent, and the El-Arish port authorities for their support. Turkish Embassy in Cairo Organizes Traditional Iftar for Egyptian Journalists
Taarek Refaat The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Cairo hosted an iftar for Egyptian journalists on the occasion of the centenary of the establishment of Turkish-Egyptian diplomatic relations. The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Cairo organized a traditional iftar for Egyptian journalists at the embassy headquarters. More than 100 Egyptian journalists attended the iftar, and Turkish doner and baklava were served to the guests. In his address to journalists at the iftar, Ambassador Salih Mutlu Şen spoke about the Turkish doner, explaining that it was first introduced for commercial consumption in Istanbul at the beginning of the 20th century. He explained that "doner has become a staple fast food globally, especially in Germany, Egypt, and around the world." He pointed out that doner is known as "shawarma" in Arab countries, but in a different way. He explained that the words "doner" and "shawarma" mean the same thing in Turkish: something that revolves around itself. He stated that the embassy will continue its activities to promote Turkish cuisine and Turkish breakfast as part of the centenary celebrations of the establishment of relations. He explained that the Anatolian Fireworks Troupe is scheduled to perform a special show in front of the Pyramids as part of the centenary celebrations, and that contacts with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture on this matter are ongoing. He explained that an exhibition of traditional Turkish wedding dresses is also scheduled to be held in May, featuring Egyptian models. Ambassador Salih Mutlu Şen emphasized that Turkish-Egyptian relations have witnessed rapid progress over the past year, best demonstrated by the high-level exchange of visits. He added that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has visited only one country twice in 2024, namely Egypt. On the other hand, he emphasized that Azerbaijan's admission to the G8 at the G8 meeting held in Egypt's New Administrative Capital on December 19, chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, was a joint outcome between Turkey and Egypt. He stated that the G8 seeks cooperation between Islamic countries, especially those developing in the fields of economy and industry. He emphasized that technological and industrial cooperation between Turkey and Egypt will continue to strengthen and deepen with the contribution of the private sector. He pointed out that Turkish companies' interest in the Suez Canal Economic Zone is growing, and that in the Qantara West area alone, there are four factories under construction or nearing completion, valued at over $200 million. The Ambassador stated that Ramadan has become a month of joy, celebrated with enthusiasm in both Egypt and Turkey throughout the month, with families and children participating. He said that one of the things he most admired about Egypt was the sincere participation of all segments of the Egyptian people in Ramadan, and their presence together during all visits and holidays. He also noted that Ramadan is a month of cooperation and solidarity, and said that he, personally and as an embassy, is fulfilling our duty, both as a humanitarian and Islamic duty, in this regard. He explained that he will host an iftar for 500 Egyptian families in a few days and will distribute Eidiya (money gifts) to children on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr. The ambassador explained that there is very close consultation and communication between Turkey and Egypt on regional issues, especially Libya, Syria, Sudan, and Palestine, and that there may be high-level visits and meetings involving Turkey, Egypt, and other regional countries on regional issues in the coming days. Authorities arrest 26 workers as thousands strike for fair pay at supplier for international brands
Authorities in Egypt arrested 26 people on Saturday who work for the east Cairo factories of T&C Garments, a Turkish-Egyptian clothing manufacturer that supplies goods to global brands including Levis, UNIQLO and Tommy Hilfiger. Around 6,000 employees at T&C Garments' Obour City complex began a strike for fairer wages at the beginning of the year. As the cost of living increases, they demand that the company increase bonuses, commissions and meal allowances for workers, who currently take home less than minimum wage per month. Four workers at the T&C Garments factory told Mada Masr on condition of anonymity that security forces arrested 26 of their colleagues from their homes over the weekend. Among those arrested was Ahmed Hassan Abdel Aziz from the Zawamel village in the Sharqiya Governorate, according to one of the company employees from the same village, who described authorities arresting his colleague from his home on Saturday evening. A larger group of police and Central Security Forces personnel is now stationed outside the factory premises in the Industrial Zone at Obour City, the sources said. Only workers from the packing, laundry and cutting departments were admitted to the premises for Sunday's shift at the company, which suspended daily transport into the industrial zone for night shift workers as soon as the strike began and did the same for morning shift workers in most departments shortly afterward. When workers arrived at the factory on Sunday, they gathered in the yard in front of the administration office, where they declared they would continue their strike until their demands were met. 'The company is trying to divide us to break the strike,' one worker told Mada Masr. T&C's executive manager presented an offer to the workers on Sunday, another laborer said. 'They offered us a 17 percent bonus increase, which we rejected. We want 50 percent.' The thousands of factory workers launched their strike on January 16, demanding a 50 percent increase in their annual bonus to cope with rising living costs, a raise in meal allowances from LE600 to LE1,200, an implementation of the minimum wage, permission for discretionary leave and paid public holidays, in accordance with the labor law. Workers at the company currently take home between LE4,000 and LE5,000 per month, substantially below the minimum wage for the private sector, which is set at LE6,000. Bonuses, which the laborers expected to receive in the third week of January, are also yet to be paid out, one worker said. They are also demanding that the company improve its on-site health clinic, which is poorly equipped and offers little more than painkillers, they say. Workers who fall ill or are injured on the job must seek treatment outside the company at their own expense, and if they have to take leave for health reasons, they are only paid a quarter of their daily wage, workers told Mada Masr last week. The strike is further calling for the dismissal of HR manager Mohamed Abdel Rahman for insulting workers. T&C Garments, a partnership between Egypt's Tolba Group and Turkey's Tay Group, manufactures ready-made clothing for well known brands, including Levis, UNIQLO and Tommy Hilfiger. The factory operates under the Qualified Industrial Zones (QIZ) agreement, a protocol established by the US in 1996 to build economic ties between Israel and its neighbors, which requires that Egyptian products include a 10.5 percent component to enter the US market. The company exports 70 percent of its production to the US and the rest to Europe.
