Stand up on the plane too early? You could be risking a fine

We all want to get off the plane as soon as it lands, but that can become a disorderly scramble, even before the aircraft has come to halt. Now the Turkish government has decided enough is enough. A memo from the country's Directorate General of Civil Aviation says that passengers can be fined if they 'stand up, go to the corridor, open the overhead bins and proceed along the aisles … despite the announcements about the rules during taxi after landing, when the aircraft has not yet reached the parking position and the seat belt warning lights have not turned off.' The amount of the fine was not mentioned, and it's unclear if anyone has actually been given one. But considering that IGA Istanbul Airport is the best connected airport in the world and this rule applies to all commercial flights entering the country, there are a lot of travelers who could potentially come under scrutiny. Besides the people who stand up before the plane is safely at the gate, fines can also be issued to 'passengers who use or attempt to use smoke-producing devices or products (aka vapes) on the aircraft.' Even if you live in an urban area, there are still ways to get out and enjoy the great outdoors this summer. Türkiye Hopes to Host Leaders of US, Russia, Ukraine after Potential Next Round Peace Talks
Türkiye hopes that Russia and Ukraine will largely finish work on technical issues at their next potential talks aimed at ending the war, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Friday. He added that Ankara wanted to host a leaders' summit afterwards with the Turkish and US presidents also present. Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, to where he travelled after talks in Moscow earlier this week, Fidan said the May 16 talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul - the first direct contact between them in three years - marked a new start, adding he believed further meetings were possible.

Syrian leader Sharaa meets Turkish President Erdogan in Istanbul
Syria's interim leader met with Turkey's president in Istanbul on Saturday, in an unannounced visit amid efforts by the new rulers in Damascus to rebuild the war-torn country. Ankara is a firm supporter of Syria's new authorities, who toppled longtime dictator Bashar al-Assad in December and are seeking to roll back sanctions and rebuild the country's infrastructure and economy after almost 14 years of civil war. On Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met Syria's interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa in Istanbul, according to Anadolu state news agency. The two leaders were seen greeting each other outside Erdogan's office, ahead of a meeting that private Turkish news channel NTV said lasted more than two and a half hours. The Syrian delegation included its foreign and defence ministers and would "discuss a number of common issues" with the Turkish side, the Syrian presidency said on Telegram. Turkey's foreign and defence ministers, its intelligence chief and the head of the state defence industry agency also took part, according to Anadolu. Since Assad's ouster, the new administration has been looking to build relations with the West and roll back sanctions, but some governments had expressed reluctance, pointing to the Islamist past of leading figures. The US and the EU have announced the lifting of sanctions earlier this month. Both Erdogan and Sharaa have expressed their determination to work together to combat terror threats in Syria.

PKK agrees to put down its weapons
Turkiye's Government says a peace deal with a Kurdish militant group is an historic agreement that resolves a decades-old conflict. The Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, has agreed to disband after fighting the Turkish state for more than 40 years. The deal could also help settles conflicts in Iraq and Syria, if a process of disarmament and democratic recognition succeeds.
