Condemn Israel's actions in Gaza, civil society members urge govt.
The India Palestine Solidarity Forum (IPSF), a coalition of civil society leaders and people's movements, submitted a detailed memorandum to MPs on July 27, urging the government to condemn Israel's actions in Gaza for what it calls 'the ongoing genocide, forced starvation, and ethnic cleansing of the people of Palestine by Israel.' Signed by over two dozen eminent figures including Medha Patkar, Tushar Gandhi, Prashant Bhushan, Anand Patwardhan, and retired judge Justice Kolse Patil, and several advocates, journalists, authors, activists, social workers and political parties, the memorandum demands 'decisive' Indian leadership in global calls for a permanent ceasefire, humanitarian relief, and accountability for alleged Israeli war crimes. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday (August 5, 2025), Dr. Sunilam, president of IPSF, stressed the urgency of the moment. 'The memorandum urges the Government of India to unequivocally and categorically condemn the ongoing genocide, forced starvation, and ethnic cleansing of the people of Palestine by Israel.' Feroze Mithiborwala, general secretary of IPSF, called the silence of the Indian government on this 'historic moral issue' alarming. 'This statement bears the endorsement of some of India's most prominent civil society leaders,' he added. Addressed to both houses of Parliament, the memorandum outlines four broad demands: make and lead calls for a permanent ceasefire and humanitarian access in Gaza; restore India's moral authority in foreign policy by reaffirming support for Palestinian statehood and ending all agreements, military, security, agricultural, technological, with the Israeli government and related entities; reject Western propaganda, support independent and fact-based journalism, and uphold international justice mechanisms; and, ensure parliamentary oversight, transparency and public dialogue on India's Gaza policy. Tushar Gandhi, president of Hum Bharat Ke Log, said, 'The Modi government must condemn Israel for the genocide and war crimes being committed in Gaza. India must play a proactive role in ensuring Israel ends the policy of starvation and allows humanitarian essentials, food, water, medicines, to be provided to the Gazan population.' The memorandum presents statistics to highlight the humanitarian crisis. Since October 2023, over 58,000 deaths have been officially reported in Gaza, the majority of them women and children. Independent assessments, including those by The Lancet and The Economist, place the figure between 77,000 and 1,09,000. Over 1.9 million have been displaced, with infrastructure—including hospitals, bakeries, and water systems—systematically destroyed. Aid convoys and humanitarian workers have come under fire, and the UN Special Rapporteur has described Gaza's condition as a 'man-made famine' the memorandum said.

Tushar Gandhi evicted from Champaran venue at behest of RSS, NDA govt, says Cong
New Delhi, July 14 (UNI) The Congress today strongly condemned the alleged eviction of Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson, Tushar Gandhi from a community hall in Champaran, calling it a direct insult carried out at the 'behest of the RSS and the ruling NDA government'. In a post on X, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, criticised the BJP-JDU alliance, alleging, 'At the behest of the RSS, the NDA government has now stooped to insulting Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson, Tushar Gandhi. The land of Champaran, which gained global recognition due to Gandhi's struggle against the exploitation and oppression by indigo planters, has now witnessed the eviction of Tushar Gandhi from a community hall'. He accused the BJP-JDU leadership of hypocrisy, saying, 'These leaders bow their heads before Mahatma Gandhi's statue but cannot tolerate those who follow his ideology.' Khera said that Tushar Gandhi is currently leading a 'Parivartan Yatra' aimed at challenging alleged 'electoral manipulation' and what he described as the 'theft of the public mandate'. He claimed the government, rattled by growing dissent, is resorting to undemocratic actions to stifle opposition voices. 'Just as Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent movement brought an end to 135 years of exploitative farming, the end of this 20-year-old oppressive regime is near,' Khera asserted. Despite the alleged humiliation, Congress reaffirmed its commitment to nonviolent resistance and electoral integrity. 'We will not allow voter suppression to take root in our democracy,' Khera added. Donate now New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday (May 14) directed the Uttar Pradesh government to bear the schooling expenses of a Muslim child from Muzaffarnagar who was slapped by his classmates on directions of their teacher. While hearing a plea filed by Tushar Gandhi, the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, a bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan said that while the state can also convince the school to cover the expenses, the primary responsibility of bearing such expenditure would be with the government. 'It is the obligation of the State government to pay for tuition fees, cost of uniform books, etc. and transport charges of the child till he completes his school education,' said the court, reported Bar and Bench. Gandhi's petition sought action against Tripta Tyagi, the school teacher, for allegedly goading students to slap the Muslim student. A video of the incident that had gone viral on social media showed showing the child crying while Tyagi encourages other students to hit him harder. The incident had led to countrywide outrage. In October 2023, the Uttar Pradesh government had told the Supreme Court that Tyagi would face criminal charges under Section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts that are intended to outrage religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). She later surrendered before a court and was subsequently granted bail. 'Primary responsibility of meeting this expenditure is of the State' The court had also suggested last year that the state government finds a sponsor to fund the schooling expenses of the child. However, senior Advocate Shadan Farasat, representing Tushar Gandhi, submitted that the State had failed to ensure that the tuition fee and expenses for the child's school uniform were covered. While the state government told the court that the Syed Murtaza Memorial Trust had offered to pay for the student, the court once again reiterated that the primary responsibility was with the state. 'It is recorded that the trust will take care for one year. We clarify that the primary responsibility of meeting this expenditure is of the State. It will be open to the State to persuade the school authority to make the payment,' said the court. BJP-RSS communalising Pahalgam attacks: Tushar Gandhi
Kozhikode: Tushar Gandhi, social activist and the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, has alleged that BJP-RSS were trying to make the Pahalgam terror attacks into a Hindu-Muslim thing and create hatred against the Muslim community. He was speaking at a history seminar organised by the Kozhikode DCC here on Friday. "After the Pahalgam incident, they did not bother to express their sympathies with the victims and families. They immediately started spreading hate. The incident was an incident of terror in Pahalgam. It was an incident between two countries — Pakistan-backed terrorism and India. And yet, right from that time they are trying to make it into a Hindu-Muslim thing and creating hatred against the Muslim community. This is the poisonous aspect of these organisations," Gandhi said. Gandhi reiterated his earlier statement made against BJP and RSS at a function at Neyyatinkkara in March that the organisations are "poisonous organisations" and a "cancer on the country and society". "We must understand that this is not something new. They are born with that poison in their blood. Right from the beginning. Now RSS is going to be 100 years old. This poison is 100 years old also," he added.
