Kesha Originally Thought ‘Tik Tok' Was ‘Too Dumb' Before It Became Her Biggest Hit
The party don't stop for Kesha's biggest hit, 'Tik Tok,' which has remained one of the most popular songs from the late 2000s more than a decade later. But according to the pop star, she originally thought the track was 'too dumb' when she first wrote it. While serving as a guest on The Jennifer Hudson Show Tuesday (May 13), Kesha recalled being blown away by the success of 'Tik Tok' after it dropped in 2009. 'No, oh my god,' she said when asked whether she ever expected it to become such a big hit. 'Which was confusing, because I like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent human being. But it just got dumber and dumber and better and better.' Kesha added, 'When I listened to the final product, I was like, 'This is too dumb.'' Regardless, there was nothing dumb about what the track would do for her career. 'Tik Tok' would launch the California native to superstar status, becoming not just her first solo Billboard Hot 100 entry, but her first No. 1 on the chart. It would also remain in the top spot for nine weeks, her longest run at the chart's summit, and helped Kesha's first album, Animal, debut atop the Billboard 200. Fifteen years later, the musician is gearing up to release her sixth studio album, . (Period), her first LP under her own label, Kesha Records. Her departure from Dr. Luke's Kemosabe Records — the founder of which also produced much of Animal — comes after a yearslong legal battle with Dr. Luke over Kesha's claims that he drugged and raped her in 2005, after which he sued her for defamation while calling the allegations 'false and shocking.' Their ensuing legal battle continued for nine years before the two parties finally reached a settlement in 2023. Of finally getting to release music fully on her own terms, Kesha told Hudson, 'I'm really excited for the world to hear this, because I've been in control of everything.' 'It's been all of my vision, all of my words, a lot of hard work, a lot of joy,' she continued, tearing up. 'Really coming back home to myself and feeling what freedom really looks like, feels like, sounds like.' Watch Kesha's conversation with Hudson below. ‘10 years of #blurryface': What is it and why is it trending
Trends on social media are often seasonal – they come, they take over the internet for a while, and then poof.. They vanish into thin air! However, not with the #blurryface trend! Netizens are observing the 10th anniversary of the #blurryface trend, and once again – it has marked significant outreach! What is #blurryface? Primarily, 'Blurryface' is the fourth studio album by the American musical duo Twenty One Pilots , which was released on May 17, 2015. Lyrically, the album incorporated themes of mental health, insecurity, doubt, and religion. The widely popular album contains the hit singles "Stressed Out" and "Ride", both of which reached the top five on the US Billboard Hot 100. The album's title track features the lyrics: 'My name's Blurryface, and I care what you think.' In the context of the album, Blurryface represents the persona of self-doubt and insecurity that the band's lead vocalist, Tyler Joseph, grapples with. This character is depicted with black paint on his neck and hands, symbolizing the internal struggles and fears that many individuals face. The origin of the trend: 10 years back, when the album was released and earned significant accolades and appreciation, the hashtag #blurryface gained massive traction on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where users began to associate it with themes of self-expression, vulnerability, and personal challenges. Content under this hashtag often includes creative edits, makeup transformations, and cosplay inspired by the Blurryface persona, reflecting the album's exploration of identity and mental health. Fans of Twenty One Pilots embraced the "Blurryface" character and its symbolism, leading to various fan-made content, including the "blurry face" trend, where Tyler Joseph's embodiment of "Blurryface" with black paint on his face and hands serves as a visual metaphor for the grip of insecurities, further fueling the trend. The fictional world of Dema, established in "Blurryface" and later explored in "Trench," also connects to the "Blurryface" character and its symbolism. In simpler words, the "blurry face" trend is a manifestation of the band's creative concept, lore, and character, which has resonated deeply with their fan base. Today, 10 years from that trend, netizens are remembering how that album – and in extension, the trend – impacted their lives. As one user on X posted, 'ten years ago today, twenty one pilots released the best album of that decade, (and possibly ever) #blurryface. since then i have lived and breathed this album, the lore, and every single song that tyler joseph has written or been attached to in any way. 10 years ago, i went høme. happy birthday, friend,' another wrote, 'the album that changed my life. ten years have gone by and i'm still here. still the little kid who fell in love with the pilots when she was 8 years old. still alive, still listening. it really does feel like yesterday i was trying to learn the judge on my uke.' The extension of #blurryface: The #blurryface" trend is directly related to the album and the fictional character "Blurryface" who represents the insecurities and doubts within each person. The character "Blurryface" is prominently featured in the album's artwork and songs, becoming a symbolic representation of these themes. For instance, TikTok users have shared videos demonstrating how to achieve the Blurryface makeup look , showcasing the album's influence on visual culture. Additionally, fans have used the hashtag to discuss the impact of the album on their lives, sharing personal stories and interpretations of its themes. What is the #blurryface trend in terms of beauty and makeup? On social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, the "blurry face trend" refers to a visual editing technique where facial features in photos and videos are intentionally obscured or blurred. In terms of beauty and makeup, the #blurryface trend is also known as blurring or soft-focus makeup, focusing on creating a natural, diffused finish that blurs imperfections and harsh lines, rather than achieving a flawless, high-coverage look. It's about softening features and enhancing the skin's natural texture, rather than covering it up. Here's why it still remains relevant and popular: Natural and effortless: Blurred makeup aims for a "just right" finish, somewhere between dewy and matte, creating a natural, airbrushed effect without looking cakey or flat. Forgiveness and acceptance: It's particularly appealing to those who don't have "perfect" skin, as it minimizes the appearance of pores and imperfections by diffusing light and creating a more unified skin texture. Soft-focus effect: The trend uses blurring products, such as primers, powders, and foundations, to create a soft-focus effect, making the skin look smoother and more refined. Celebrity and social media influence: The trend has gained traction on platforms like TikTok and red carpets, with celebrities and makeup artists adopting it for its natural, glowing finish. Here's Why Swifties Are Convinced Taylor Swift Is Going to Announce Something at the 2025 AMAs
All Swiftie eyes will be turned toward the 2025 American Music Awards later this month, as fans are absolutely convinced that Taylor Swift is planning to announce something major at this year's ceremony. There are several reasons for the detective-like fanbase's latest hunch. Two of the biggest ones tie back to the pop superstar's online store, which fans noticed now covertly spells out 'AMAs' via the first letters of each word in a prominent four-option menu: Apparel, Music, Accessories and Sale. More from Billboard Here's How to Vote for the 2025 American Music Awards Twenty One Pilots Fans Jumped Into Veronica Mars Mode After Someone Took Off With One of Josh Dun's Bespoke Drums Palm Tree Festival to Debut in St. Tropez With Headliners A$AP Rocky & Swedish House Mafia Additionally, Swift's site currently has exactly 12 items up for sale at 26% off, which fans have pointed out as two significant numbers. First, the 14-time Grammy winner's last album — the 17-week Billboard 200-topping Tortured Poets Department — was her 11th studio LP, meaning her next project would be her 12th. Second, the date of the 2025 AMAs is May 26. That, of course, isn't all. Taylor Nation recently reshared a fan's post on X about voting for Swift at this year's AMAs (she's nominated in six categories in 2025) and wrote, 'And our town, it looks so sMall from wAy up here.' 'Screamed, 'vote for the chairman' at the night sky!' Swift's team added in the May 6 post. On the surface, those lines appear to be a simple play on a lyric from Swift's track 'thanK you aIMee.' But you also might notice the randomly capitalized letters in the sentence; put them together, and what do they spell? 'AMAs.' With all of that in mind, Swifties are sure the 'Fortnight' singer has something special planned for the 2025 awards. The repetition of the number 12 in her potential Easter eggs has a lot of people thinking that an announcement pertaining to her next proper album is in the cards, but some are holding out hope that she'll actually reveal something about her long-anticipated Reputation or Taylor Swift re-records. 'Her store spelling out AMAS, 12 items on sale for 26% (the amas are on the 26th), TN capitalizing a caption to spell out AMAS…. guys… THESE ARE EASTER EGGS,' one fan wrote on X. Another person added, 'i think this enough reasonable clown material.' If Swift does unveil something album-related at the AMAs, it would be far from the first time she's used an award show for that purpose. It was at the 2022 VMAs that she announced Midnights, and while accepting best pop vocal album for that same LP at the 2024 Grammys, she announced Tortured Poets. The Eras headliner also has a special history with the AMAs in particular. In 2019, she was declared the show's second-ever artist of the decade, performing a medley of her biggest hits before accepting the honor on stage. She's also the most-decorated artist in AMAs history, boasting 40 awards in her collection total. Airing live on Memorial Day, or May 26, the AMAs will be available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S. The upcoming show comes after Swift was recently spotted out and about with boyfriend Travis Kelce for the first time in months, dining at a Philadelphia restaurant on Mother's Day (May 11) after mostly lying low following the conclusion of the Eras Tour in December. See what Swifties are saying about the possibility of a big AMAs announcement below. Ed Sheeran Gets Nostalgic Diving Into His ‘Old Phone' In Music Video Featuring Pop-Up Ipswich Pub Gig
Ed Sheeran has long known that the line between pleasure and pain is a thin one, best traversed with care and a healthy regard for the surprises life throws at you. That sentiment is essentially the thesis for the singer's new video for his nostalgic ballad 'Old Phone.' The Emil Nava-directed and Ammolite Machine-produced clip that dropped on Thursday morning (May 8) for the second single from Sheeran's upcoming Play album (Sept. 12) opens with Sheeran in a wistful mood. Sitting on his hotel bed, Ed flips through old conversations on his dusty, recently recovered Blackberry, saying in voiceover, 'I was finding text messages from people that aren't even here anymore and reading conversations with people I wish I could have conversations with now.' More from Billboard Ed Sheeran Announces Three Summer Homecoming Shows in Ipswich With Tons of Special Guests Twenty One Pilots Fans Jumped Into Veronica Mars Mode After Someone Took Off With One of Josh Dun's Bespoke Drums Palm Tree Festival to Debut in St. Tropez With Headliners A$AP Rocky & Swedish House Mafia So, he explains, he did what anyone would do in that situation: he build a bespoke, pop-up pub in Ipswich, MA in March, which fans could gain entry into by sending a video or message from an old phone that had some meaning to them. 'I found my old phone today/ In a box that I had hidden away/ Nostalgia trying to lead me astray/ Maybe I'll unwrite some wrongs,' he sings over gentle acoustic guitar and footage of fans lining up for the once-in-a-lifetime chance to join Sheeran in the pub. We watch the construction of Old Phone Pub and the delighted look on the singer's face as he sees it taking shape, as well as Sheeran reaching out to the many fans lined up outside and visiting some local neighborhood spots to spread the word. In addition to playing an impromptu Ipswich street jam, the video finds Sheeran sitting in solitude inside a bowling alley, as well as testimonials from those who submitted clips to be projected onto the walls of the bar. One was from a mom who sent in a video of her two daughters, 12 and 4 in the clip, saying, 'they were just goofin' off just being sisters,' over footage of the home movie being screened on the outside of the temporary venue. Other testimonials are from a woman who shared footage of her with her old boyfriend and a man who offered a movie of him dancing with his beloved late grandma at a wedding; at one point Sheeran can be seen chatting with the man outside the bar. 'It was really cool to watch that and to be able to share with him some of our stories. That was nice,' the mom says. The video winds down pivoting from Sheeran smiling at his old home movies, to fans sitting mesmerized as he performs the song in the pop-up with a back-up band of Irish musicians. 'I wanted to make it feel like the song does… raw, stripped-back, emotional, nostalgic and special,' Sheeran says at the end. Over the past month Sheeran has made headlines by playing surprise mini-concerts at other bars in Boston and Nashville, as well as hitting Nashville's Santa's Pub a few weeks ago with Noah Kahan for a short dual set and reconstructing the pop-up pub at Coachella. Ed Sheeran Sets Up Pink ‘Play' Phone Booths Around Europe Previewing Upcoming Album
Ed Sheeran has found yet another novel way to promote his upcoming Play album. After opening a pop-up pub in Ipswich, MA and encouraging fans to share archival messages and videos from their 'Old Phone' and recording several international takes on the album's first single, 'Azizam,' the singer dialed up a new clever idea over the weekend. 'The Play Phone Booth spotted in London, Amsterdam, Cologne, Madrid and Naples this weekend! Who dropped by and which song teaser was your favourite?,' he wrote on X along with images of fans stepping into the booths that mimic the iconic look of London's red phone boxes. One close-up shot shows that the booths were stocked with drink coasters for 'The Old Phone' pub. 'I was finding text messages from people that aren't even here anymore and reading conversations with people I wish I could have conversations with now,' he says in voiceover.
