California winery that produces "Two Buck Chuck" to cut nearly 150 more jobs

CERES – For the second time this year, Bronco Wine Company, more known for its product Charles Shaw or "Two Buck Chuck," is cutting jobs. The wine company in Ceres says it has to cut 146 employees as it adjusts to what it calls "evolving industry dynamics," and it's not the first time. The company laid off more than 80 workers earlier this year. One of the Central Valley's biggest producers has laid off more than 220 workers since the start of the year. Their reason is consumer behavior and population shifts. Some students at Stanislaus State said wine just isn't on their radar. "I think Gen Z goes towards Hard Arizona, Twisted Teas, Iced Smirnof,f things like that," a student said. Grower Stuart Spencer agrees, saying the issue isn't how much Gen Z drinks, it's what they're drinking. Hard seltzers, cocktails in a can and cheaper grab-and-go options are dominating. "One of the rising categories are these ready-to-drink, RTD type products that are competing directly with wine," Spencer said. The changing taste buds are leaving a big mark on the industry. "There's a lot that's happening right now," Spencer said. "There's a lot growers are doing it, removing vineyards and reducing supply." In Stanislaus County, the total wine grape production value is on the decline, falling 21% from 2019 to 2023. "You know, the whole industry has been struggling the last couple years as we've seen decreased demand," Spencer said. Spencer said the economy plays a role in demand and young people. At the start of the year, Bronco Wine Company stated they had 750 employees here in Ceres. They've lost over 220 employees since.

Lancaster County man accused of raping unconscious teen on Susquehanna River island

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A Lancaster County man's bail was set at $1 million after State Police allege he raped a teenager when she was not fully conscious on a Susquehanna River island last summer. Salvador Villa-Del Toro, 26, of Holtwood, is accused of raping the 17-year-old after she hit her head on a rock when she fell while on the island within the Martic Township area of the river, according to court documents. State Police say they were called to the Lock 12 area of the river on July 27, 2024, around noon for a girl suffering from a possible overdose. Friends of the girl reported a man, later identified to be Villa-Del Toro, showed up on a Sea-Doo jet ski offering rides, and took the teen out on the river for about an hour. According to State Police, when the two returned back, the friends saw there was something wrong, reporting the girl could barely walk or stand. Someone then pulled out their phone and recorded the incident and Villa-Del Toro. Villa-Del Toro was linked to the jet ski through its registration and the recorded video, the charges state. Police detained him the next day at the Muddy Creek Access boat launch after confirming there was an active warrant for his arrest for a parole violation for statutory sexual assaults and corruption of minors. Troopers interviewed the girl who said she and Vella-Del Toro conversed about relationships and ages during the jet ski ride to the island. She told them Villa-Del Toro took her to a trail after asking her to go for a walk. Before the jet ski ride, the victim said she had two Twisted Teas and felt 'wasted,' but she said she was not drugged, the charges show. The girl remembered falling from a bench and hitting her head on a rock, later needing help getting up. At this point, the victim said Villa-Del Toro allegedly raped her and took her bathing suit. State Police say the victim doesn't remember anything before the alleged rape, but that she needed help putting her bathing suit back on and also needed help walking back to the jet ski. Results of DNA testing also showed Troopers that Villa-Del Toro's DNA was found on the victim, the charges show. Villa-Del Toro faces multiple felony charges that include a count of rape of an unconscious victim, indecent assault of an unconscious person, indecent assault without the consent of another, aggravated indecent assault, aggravated indecent assault without consent, corruption of minors, sexual assault and unlawful contact with a minor. He remains locked up in Lancaster County Prison with bail set at $1 million by Magisterial District Judge William Mankin II. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 6.
