LOUISIANA (KTAL/KMSS) — The Annual Louisiana Free Fishing Weekend returns on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, Jun 8. Northwestern State University expanding club sports programs to meet student requests Free Fishing Weekend allows residents and visitors to fish without a fishing license. All other normal restrictions (size, season, catch limits, and gear) will still apply. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Secretary Tyler Bosworth explained, 'Each year, we designate a weekend of fishing with no need to purchase a fishing license as an incentive for families and friends to enjoy one of our state's most beloved pastimes.' LDWF will also offer events on June 7 to teach basic fishing skills. These include the things you need to know while preparing to catch fish, such as bait choice, tackle setup, casting, and knot tying, and fishing mechanics, such as techniques, landing, handling, and taking the fish off the hook. I-10 Park in Jennings, LA, will host a Get Out & Fish event from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers and LDWF biologists will provide instruction and assistance while guests fish a stocked pond. Equipment and bait will be provided while supplies last. LSUS Fishing connecting with community through seminars at senior care facilities LDWF will host two Intro to Fishing courses. The first will be at the Gretna City Park from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The second will be in New Orleans at Joe Brown Park from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Both events will teach rigging, bait, and gear selection to new and out-of-practice anglers, followed by an hour of fishing with LDWF staff. The event is free, but requires registration. For Intro to Fishing, participants 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Participants 18 and older must have a valid fishing license. Shreveport Aquarium, Caddo Lake Institute to release more Paddlefish on March 2 Zemurray Park in Hammond will host a youth fishing rodeo with fishing, prizes, and resource booths for ages 5-15 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. An offshore landing permit is still required when possessing tuna, billfish, swordfish, amberjacks, groupers, snappers, hinds, cobia, wahoo, dolphinfish, and gray triggerfish, but it is free for the weekend. LDWF announces new wildlife management area in Allen Parish

ALLEN PARISH, La. () — The has announced it will be establishing a new 426-acre wildlife management area. The Flatwoods Savanna WMA will be located in southwest Allen Parish between the towns of Reeves and LeBlanc, Louisiana. Flatwoods Savanna WMA was created in partnership with the in part due to funding from the Louisiana Outdoor Forever Fund, a program established in 2022 to provide funding for outdoor conservation projects in the State of Louisiana, according to LDWF Acting Secretary Tyler Bosworth. 'We are proud to add this property to our WMA program while also highlighting the Louisiana Outdoors Forever program and our conservation partners,' Bosworth said. 'This new WMA fulfills LDWF's strategic plan by providing additional WMA recreational opportunities while also conserving one of Louisiana's most unique habitats.' Close Thanks for signing up! CATAHOULA PARISH, La. () — is reporting a confirmed case of Chronic Wasting Disease in a hunter-harvested white-tailed buck in Catahoula Parish. LDWF said this is the first case of CWD confirmed positive in a wild deer outside of Tensas Parish. CWD was first detected in Louisiana in 2022. LDWF said this latest positive brings the total number of detections for Louisiana to 34. CWD is a neurodegenerative disease of white-tailed deer and other members of the Cervidae family. It is caused by a prion, an infectious, misfolded protein particle, and is 100% fatal in affected deer after an indeterminate incubation period. There is no treatment or preventative vaccine for CWD. CWD-infected deer may exhibit signs of weight loss and emaciation, salivation, frequent drinking and urination, incoordination, circling, lack of fear of people, and always results in the death of the animal. Officials said the confirmation was made for a sample submitted by LDWF staff from a hunter-harvested adult buck taken on private land in Catahoula Parish. Although CWD has not been shown to be contagious to humans, the and the recommend against the human consumption of deer known to be infected with CWD. Also, it is recommended that people hunting in areas known to harbor CWD-infected deer have their deer tested for the disease prior to consuming the animals. LDWF said they will provide testing for hunter-harvested deer free of charge. LDWF Acting Secretary Tyler Bosworth said, 'We will continue to count on our hunters, property owners, deer processors and taxidermists for their assistance in monitoring CWD as their continued partnership with our department will help to control the spread of CWD in the state and keep our deer population healthy.'
