Teen's Parents Said No to a Party — So He Killed Them and Invited 60 People Over with Bodies in the Closet

Tyler Hadley killed his parents, hid their bodies and hosted a party for 60 teens that same nightNEED TO KNOW Tyler Hadley killed his parents with a hammer on July 16, 2011, then posted 'Party at my crib tonight… maybe' on Facebook He spent hours cleaning up blood before inviting 60 teens to the house while the bodies were hidden in a bedroom In a 2024 Court TV interview, Hadley said the idea started as a joke — and admitted he still doesn't fully understand why he did itTyler Hadley wanted to throw a party. When his parents said no, he killed them — and invited dozens of friends over while their bodies lay hidden in the master bedroom. The then-17-year-old beat Blake and Mary-Jo Hadley to death with a claw hammer inside their Florida home on July 16, 2011. Then, after dragging their bodies into the bedroom and covering them with household items — linens, books, picture frames and towels — he spent nearly three hours cleaning the blood, according to his 2024 televised interview on Court TV's Interview with a Killer series. That night, Hadley posted on Facebook: 'Party at my crib tonight… maybe.' More than 60 teens showed up — most had no idea his parents were lying dead just down the hall. Some guests later told police the house smelled strange. Others noticed blood in different parts of the home. In the Court TV interview, Hadley recalled the moment it all became real. 'I went into my bathroom, and I was covered in blood, everywhere,' he said. 'There was blood all over the place. And I laughed at myself in the mirror and then went about my business of having a party.' Hadley told investigators he struck his mother from behind as she sat at a computer. His father ran in, horrified, and asked, 'Why?' 'Why the f--- not?' Hadley said he responded. He described entering a dissociative state — 'this sort of psychotic state or trance' — and said he remembered hearing his parents screaming and pleading for their lives. But he kept swinging. After the murders, Hadley locked the family dog in a closet, hid his parents' cell phones, and attempted to erase evidence of what he'd done. He later admitted to taking ecstasy beforehand and said he felt detached during the attack. According to police and court testimony, Hadley told friends in the weeks leading up to the killings that he planned to kill his parents. One even recalled him saying that he wanted to host a party afterward because it had "never been done before." In the 2024 interview, Hadley told Court TV's David Scott that the idea of killing his parents started as dark humor. He and his friends had been sitting around one night drinking beer and smoking weed, he said, when the thought first surfaced. 'I would sit there and think about it,' he said. 'And I think I latched onto it and didn't let go of it.' 'The thoughts didn't go away,' he added. 'If I could just relieve myself of the thoughts, then it would be done.' Eventually, he said, the plan was no longer a joke. At some point during the party, Hadley pulled aside his best friend, Michael Mandell. He told him what he had done. Mandell didn't believe it — until Tyler unlocked the master bedroom door and showed him the bodies. 'I come up to the [master bedroom] door. The party's going on over here, and I turn the door knob,' Mandell told ABC News. 'I looked down, and I [saw] his father's leg against the door… My eyes popped up, and I said, 'Oh my, he's telling the truth. He did it. This is real.'' Mandell called the police, and Port St. Lucie officers arrived early the next morning. There, they found the Hadleys' bodies in the bedroom and arrested Tyler on the spot. A blood-covered hammer lay between the victims' bodies, per CBS News. Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? He was sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole. During the hearing, Judge Robert R. Makemson called the crime 'brutal, heinous and premeditated," per CBS. Prosecutors noted that while in prison, Hadley began calling himself 'Hammer Boy' and signed autographs for other inmates, per CBS. In the 2024 interview, Hadley said he still couldn't fully explain why he did it. 'I think it was to stop all of our pain,' he said. 'And other than that, I can't answer that with any clarity. I can't. It's still not clear to me. It was just that one thought — that kept on going.' Hadley, now 31, will be eligible for a sentencing review in 2039, per the Treasure Coast Newspapers. Teen locked dog away, bludgeoned parents to death then had a party

One Florida teen started joking about killing his parents with his friends - then followed through on it in a prolonged violent outburst which left him covered in his own parents' blood. Tyler Hadley was just 17 when he locked his family dog in a cupboard and bludgeoned his parents to death with a hammer before his father, Blake uttered his final devastating question to his son: 'Why?' Tyler's father was a nuclear power plant operator, and Mary Jo, his mother taught at the local school. Tyler also had a brother - Ryan. His aunts recalled that Tyler was "cute" calling him an "adorable little boy," according to Crime and Investigation. They added that "he was constantly hugging his mom." At High School Tyler stopped playing sport and started experimenting with drugs before his behavior became erratic and concerning. His alcohol and drug use escalated and he was knownto police before he was involved in a $15,000 civil suit after injuring a child while driving his father's car in June 2010, reports Mirror US. In a final attempt to save their son before he turned 18, his parents sent Tyler to rehab but the teen was not happy. His uncle said: "That kid wanted his freedom, and he wanted to party... his parents were in the way, and he felt there was no way out." Then the sinister jokes began. Tyler told a close friend exactly what he was planning to do. The idea was horrific, he wanted to throw a party after murdering both of his parents. On the day of the murders, he posted an ominous message on Facebook: "Party at my crib tonight... maybe." Tyler hid his parents' phones and locked the family dog in the cupboard, then took three ecstasy pills and picked up a claw hammer. He killed his mother first, attacking her from behind while she was on her computer. Hearing her screams, his father asked his son "Why?" in shock. Tyler replied: "'Why the f*** not?" before attacking him. Tyler then moved their bodies to the master bedroom and cleaned up the blood, which was splattered all over the house and his body. He then invited around 60 people over to party - after placing an assortment of objects over the dead body. Tyler told several people at the party he had killed his parents and even showed his best friend, Michael Mandell, their bodies. But others there that night reported odd smells and sightings of spatters of blood around the house. Michael would eventually alert the police but not until the party had finished. Tyler was also caught on CCTV using his parents' stolen credit cards to buy alcohol and other supplies. Tyler was arrested early the next morning. His lack of remorse led prosecutors to argue his desire to throw a house party meant more than his parents' lives. Tyler pleaded no contest to two counts of first-degree murder. He was initially sentenced to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. In 2018, he was resentenced as an adult to life in prison. Tyler continues to brag about his horrific crimes in prison, regularly signing autographs for fellow inmates with his self-proclaimed nickname, Hammer Boy. A prison guard also reported finding a hammer the 'Hammer Boy' had fashioned himself behind bars. Prison guard D. Johnson wrote in his report of the April 6 incident: "I discovered a homemade weapon fashioned from a piece of metal approximately 6 inches in length, sharpened to a point with a piece of cloth wrapped around one end to be used as a handle." Tyler was ordered to spend 60 days in disciplinary confinement, living in a solitary cell with limited privileges. State prison records show Tyler was also given an additional 30 days of confinement after a disciplinary hearing found that he had 20 unauthorized absences from a teaching assistant job. He refused to participate in his disciplinary hearings and refused to sign the violation forms, according to prison reports.
