Wisconsin football top class of 2026 target commits to Notre Dame
Wisconsin football top class of 2026 target commits to Notre Dame Wisconsin football top class of 2026 target Tyler Merrill committed to Notre Dame on Thursday. The four-star offensive lineman chose the Fighting Irish over other finalists Wisconsin, Penn State, Alabama and Clemson. He joins a Notre Dame class of 2026 that currently ranks No. 5 in the nation at this early stage in the cycle, with just seven players committed. Related: Former Wisconsin cornerback files lawsuit against NCAA 247Sports currently ranks Merrill as the No. 61 overall player in the class of 2026, the No. 5 interior offensive lineman and the No. 2 recruit from his home state of Pennsylvania. By all accounts, he's one of the top players at his position in the class. His commitment to Notre Dame doesn't come as a major surprise. On3's Recruiting Prediction Machine listed the Fighting Irish as the prohibitive favorite. Notably, he commits to play for Notre Dame offensive line coach Joe Rudolph, a longtime Wisconsin assistant (tight ends coach from 2008-11, offensive coordinator from 2015-21). Wisconsin has still yet to make a move in the class of 2026. It has just one player committed: three-star offensive lineman Benjamin Novak. The program is looking for its third top-25 class in as many years under head coach Luke Fickell. Merrill would have been a major recruiting win to kick off the cycle. Instead, he commits to join a Notre Dame offensive line room that currently sits near top of the sport. Notre Dame football lands 2026 4-star offensive lineman
When you make it to the championship game of the College Football Playoff, you usually see a jump in recruiting and that is exactly what is happening for Notre Dame. The Irish have been especially great along the lines and on Thursday landed a commitment from 2026 Pennsylvania offensive tackle Tyler Merrill. The 6-foot, 5-inch and 338-pound prospects is one of the country's best, as he is ranked as the No. 61 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Notre Dame beat the four other finalists in Penn State, Alabama, Clemson and Wisconsin for Merrill's commitment. He is the No. 7 verbal in the cycle for the Irish, as he also joins Ben Nichols and Sullivan Garvin as the offensive line commits. The Irish will most likely take at least one more player on the line, as they typically like to bring in at least 4 in every recruiting class. There is potential they'll take a fifth as well, but expect at least one more as Notre Dame shores up its 2026 group.

The Badgers recently made Merrill's list of finalists, along with Penn State, Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame. He will reportedly announce his final decision at 2:20 p.m. ET, 1:20 p.m. CT on the On3 Recruits YouTube channel. He currently sits as the 247Sports Composite's No. 61 overall player in the class of 2026, No. 5 interior offensive lineman and No. 2 recruit from his home state of Pennsylvania. On3 has a similar outlook -- it has Merrill listed as the No. 82 overall player in the class. 247Sports has yet to release any predictions for Merrill's landing spot. On3's Recruiting Prediction Machine, however, lists Notre Dame as the leader at 87.8%. The in-state Nittany Lions are next at 5%, with everyone else at or below 1%. Notably, longtime Wisconsin assistant Joe Rudolph currently coaches Notre Dame's offensive line. Wisconsin will look to pull off a similar recruiting upset to when it successfully landed top class of 2025 lineman Hardy Watts over Michigan and Clemson. The Badgers currently have just one player committed in the class of 2026: three-star interior offensive lineman Benjamin Novak. The program is looking to continue a recent string of recruiting success under third-year head coach Luke Fickell -- it finished the 2024 and 2025 cycles at No. 23 and No. 25, respectively. Stay tuned later this afternoon as Merrill announces his collegiate destination.
