Orioles release Kyle Gibson amid slew of changes
May 18 - A day after the Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde, Baltimore made more changes Sunday, including the release of pitcher Kyle Gibson. The right-hander signed a one-year, $5.25 million contract in March, a return to Baltimore after a successful 2024 in St. Louis, but his start to this season had been disastrous. Gibson fell to 0-3 on the season after allowing six runs on six hits in two-thirds of an inning against the Washington Nationals on Saturday, the team's first game following Hyde's dismissal earlier in the day. Gibson started four games in 2025 with a 16.78 ERA and seven home runs surrendered. Previously an All-Star with the Texas Rangers in 2021, Gibson broke in the majors with the Twins in 2013, suiting up for Minnesota for seven seasons. The 37-year-old also played for the Rangers (2020-21) and Philadelphia Phillies (2021-22) before joining Baltimore in 2023. He has a 4.60 ERA and a 112-111 record in 334 career games (328 starts). The Orioles also put outfielder Tyler O'Neill on the 10-day injured list due to a left shoulder impingement. O'Neill, 29, is batting just .188 this season in 80 at-bats with nine walks. The two-time Gold Glove winner is also in his first season in Baltimore after previously starring with the St. Louis Cardinals (2018-23) and Boston Red Sox (2024). Hyde was let go following the Orioles' 15-28 start to the season, a far cry from what was expected following the organization's playoff berth and second-place finish in the AL East last season. --Field Level Media

Kyle Gibson cut by Orioles, who place Tyler O'Neill on injured list because of shoulder
BALTIMORE (AP) — Pitcher Kyle Gibson was designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday with an 0-3 record and a 16.78 ERA in four starts after signing a $5.25 million, one-year contract on March 22. A day after firing manager Brandon Hyde, the Orioles also placed outfielder Tyler O'Neill on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder impingement. Gibson allowed six runs and got just two outs in a 10-6 loss to Washington on Saturday, the first game after Tony Mansolino was promoted from third base coach to interim manager. The defeat dropped the Orioles to 15-29. A 37-year-old right-hander who was an All-Star in 2021, Gibson is 112-111 with a 4.60 ERA in 328 starts and six relief appearances over 13 seasons with Minnesota (2013-19), Texas (2020-21), Philadelphia (2021-22), the Orioles (2023, '25) and St. Louis (2024). A two-time Gold Gove winner, O'Neill is hitting .188 with two homers, 10 RBIs and a .605 OPS in his first season since signing a $49.5 million, three-year contract. Mansolino said Sunday he was 'trying to get up to speed' in his promotion from third-base coach. He declined to speculate why general manager Mike Elias appointed him as Hyde's short-term successor. 'That's probably a better question for him,' Mansolino said. 'I'm not sure. I've been here for five years, I feel like I've probably built some equity in the building through my time here. I'm sure that had a little something to do with it.' Elias has not spoken with reporters, addressing the decision only in a statement. 'As the head of baseball operations, the poor start to our season is ultimately my responsibility,' he said. 'Part of that responsibility is pursuing difficult changes in order to set a different course for the future.' Baltimore recalled outfielder Dylan Carlson and right-hander Kade Strowd from Triple-A Norfolk. ___ AP MLB:

Orioles minor league recap 5/8: Blake Money dazzles for Aberdeen
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 10, Nashville Sounds (Brewers) 6 - F/10 The Tides benefitted from 13 hits, nine walks, and three Nashville errors to score 10 runs in this extra-inning win. Tyler O'Neill continued his rehab, batting second and playing right field. He went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a strikeout. Luis Vázquez led the offense with three hits, including a three-run home run. TT Bowens singled, tripled, and walked. Dylan Beavers singled, walked, stole a base, and scored once. Jud Fabian reached base three times. David Bañuelos smacked his first home run of the season off of old friend Bruce Zimmermann. Advertisement Cameron Weston turned in a nice start for the O's. Over five innings he allowed two runs on five hits, three walks, and four strikeouts. Kade Strowd struggled in relief, coughing up four runs on six hits in just two-thirds of an inning. But from there it was smooth sailing. Grant Wolfram worked a scoreless inning, and then Roansy Contreras dominated for three frames, striking out five in the process to earn the win. Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 4, Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) 3 - Game 1 - F/8 Game 1 of the doubleheader saw the Baysox come back from a three-run deficit to get the extra-innings victory. Trace Bright was the starter for Chesapeake, but he lasted just three innings and allowed all three of the runs, two of which were earned. The bullpen took over from there. Houston Roth, Preston Johnson, and Keagan Gillies combined for five scoreless innings of relief. Johnson was the standout. He worked three hitless innings, walked four, and struck out five. Advertisement The Baysox offense produced their four runs off of six hits (all singles) and six walks. Frederick Bencosme reached base twice, but struggled on the bases. He was caught stealing once and picked off the other time. Creed Willems and Max Wagner both recorded a base hit and a run scored. Silas Ardoin walked four times and scored a run. Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 2, Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) 1 - Game 2 The Baysox completed the doubleheader sweep with another comeback, this time bouncing back from just a one-run gap. Tavian Josenberger walked and stole two bases. Advertisement It was a group effort on the pitching side. Four different hurlers appeared in this game. Juan Nuñez stuck around for the longest, tossing 2.2 innings in which he allowed one run, walked three, and struck out six. Edgar Portes, Yaqui Rivera, and Gerald Ogando then combined for 4.1 shutout frames to get a win in the nightcap. High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 1, Jersey Shore BlueClaws (Phillies) 0 Aberdeen cashed in on a great performance from the pitching staff, led by starter Blake Money. The LSU product delivered 5.1 scoreless innings in which he struck out six and walked just one to earn the win. Levi Stoudt, on a rehab assignment, worked 1.2 perfect innings. And Wyatt Cheney nabbed his second save of the season with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. There was less to be impressed by on the offensive side of things. They went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, struck out 14 times, and worked six walks. Their lone run scored on an Aneudis Mordán sac fly to bring in Jake Cunningham. Mordán, Cunningham, and Ethan Anderson had one hit apiece. Anderson's double was their only extra-base knock. Vance Honeycutt went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 6, Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs) 3 The Shorebirds managed to score six runs without the help of an extra-base hit. All 11 of their hits were singles. They added to that five walks and two stolen bases. Their 4-for-11 line with runners in scoring position was helpful to make the most of their opportunities. Edwin Amparo led the lineup with three hits. Raylin Ramos singled twice, scored twice, and drove in two runs. Alfredo Velásquez also had two hits and scored twice. Advertisement Luis De León made his season debut as the starting pitcher. He lasted just 1.1 innings and allowed a run before handing the ball to Jake Cravey. Orioles reinstate OF Tyler O'Neill (neck) from IL
May 10 - The Baltimore Orioles activated outfielder Tyler O'Neill from the 10-day injured list prior to Friday night's road game against the Los Angeles Angels. O'Neill hasn't played for Baltimore since April 23 due to a neck injury. He is slated to bat sixth and play right field on Friday in Anaheim. Infielder Coby Mayo was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. O'Neill, 29, is batting just .215 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 18 games in his first season with the Orioles. He started off with a big game on Opening Day when he hit a three-run homer against the Toronto Blue Jays to extend his major league record of homering on Opening Day to six years in a row. O'Neill finished 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBIs and two walks in the 12-2 victory. O'Neill was batting .379 after a two-hit game against the Kansas City Royals on April 5. He then fell into a 3-for-36 funk (.083) before being placed on the IL. O'Neill was activated after going 2-for-6 in a two-game rehab with Norfolk. The eight-year veteran has a .245 career average with 111 homers and 288 RBIs in 608 games with the St. Louis Cardinals (2018-23), Boston Red Sox (2024) and Orioles. He had a career-high 34 homers for the Cardinals in 2021 and hit 31 for the Red Sox last season. Mayo, 23, is 1-for-12 in four games with Baltimore this season. Overall, he is 5-for-53 (.094) in 21 major league games for the Orioles. --Field Level Media
